Psychopathological Aspects in Childhood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT): The Perception of Parents and Adolescents.

Background: Data about psychosocial sequelae of childhood Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) are limited and the association with a specific donor type or other medical factors is largely unknown (Chang et al., 2012). The aim of the present study was to compare the psychological aspects of pediatric HSCT survivors with healthy peers. A secondary aim was to detect whether parents and children differed in the perception of mental health status. The influence of medical factors on psychological status was also examined. Method: Thirty seven HSCT survivors (23 males) with a mean age of

Assessment of afferent gut--brain function using cerebral evoked responses to esophageal stimulation.

Increasing awareness is attributed to altered sensory perception in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal disorders. Evoked potentials (EP), which represent the brain's electrical response to peripheral stimulation, have recently been used to investigate where and how (GI) afferent information is processed along the brain-gut axis. EP can be obtained with electrical stimulation or balloon distention in the esophagus in humans. Stimulation of afferent neural pathways in the esophagus produces cerebral evoked responses allowing assessment of the peripheral afferent neural pathways involved, and o

Re-assessing disability: the impact of schistosomal infection on daily activities among women in Gezira Province, Sudan.

Schistosoma mansoni is often perceived by governments and international aid agencies to present a major public health problem in the tropical and sub-tropical world. This perception persists in spite of the fact that biomedical practitioners and research workers disagree about the nature and extent of disease and disability caused by schistosomes. This paper raises the question of whether S. mansoni should continue to be given priority as a public health problem in Gezira Province, Sudan. Biomedical and continuous observational data are blended with ethnographic information in order to develop

Developmental dysphasia: clinical importance and underlying neurological causes.

This survey deals with two aspects of developmental dysphasia which are relevant to child psychiatry; the early diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental dysphasia, which may prevent the progression of learning and behaviour disorders, and the underlying biological causes of this neuro-developmental disorder. The pathophysiology of developmental dysphasia is complex and age-related. In the pre-verbal and early verbal stage, the severity of the clinical picture is primarily determined by concomitant motor pathology (motor dysfunction, dysarthria, general and oral dyspraxia) and by

Time points or plot points - Are movies processed according to their temporal duration or their underlying content structure?

Movie-watching studies have shown that specific cortical areas are tuned to stimulus segments of certain durations. However, increases in stimulus duration naturally co-occur with increases in content complexity. This study aimed to disentangle the effects of stimulus content and duration to determine whether hierarchically nested, complex, naturalistic stimuli, like movies, are processed primarily on the basis of their underlying temporal or content structure. To this end, 48 participants watched six equal-length blocks of movie frames presented at a constant frame rate in an fMRI experiment.

Object recognition is shaped by the dynamic interplay between low-level contrast and high-level context.

Human perception relies on bottom-up sensory input and top-down prior knowledge, and object recognition is known to be modulated by the semantic relationship between objects and their surrounding context. However, the dynamic processing mechanism during object recognition and the resulting interaction between top-down and bottom-up factors remains unclear. The present study investigated how stimulus contrast modulates the effect of scene-object semantic congruency. Participants performed an object-recognition task in which target objects of high or low contrast appeared within semantically con

The oblique effect in visual working memory is enhanced by distraction, regardless of tDCS manipulations.

The sensory recruitment model suggests that visual working memory (VWM) relies on early visual cortex (EVC), while the alternative frontoparietal account argues VWM representation is independent from EVC. An emerging consensus suggests that VWM relies on a distributed network, with different brain loci serving behavior depending on task demands. To evaluate VWM reliance on EVC vs. parietal cortex, we applied anodal (or sham) transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to either occipital cortex (Oz) or right posterior parietal cortex (P4) to manipulate cortical representations before an ori

Vocal emotion perception in hearing loss - feasibility of an online training program to improve emotion perception in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) represents a frequent decline in hearing abilities reducing older adults' quality of life. Human communication not only depends on mere sound detection but also on extralinguistic and paralinguistic information like emotions. Understanding the emotions of a conversation partner is vital for connection, but is oftentimes reduced in ARHL. METHODS: A feasibility study was conducted on N = 18 (14 female) participants aged 74.6 ± 6.7 years with ARHL. Basic effectiveness and applicability of an online emotion-perception training was assessed in a pre- and

Site- and frequency-specific enhancement of visual search performance with online individual alpha frequency (IAF) repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the inferior frontal junction.

In this study, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to either the right inferior frontal junction or the right inferior parietal cortex during a difficult aerial reconnaissance search task to test its capacity to improve search performance. Two stimulation strategies previously found to enhance cognitive performance were tested: The first is called "addition by subtraction," and the second condition utilizes a direct excitatory approach by applying brief trains of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation immediately before task trials. Why does tinnitus vary with naps? A polysomnographic prospective study exploring the somatosensory hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus, defined as the conscious awareness of a noise without any identifiable corresponding external acoustic source, can be modulated by various factors. Among these factors, tinnitus patients commonly report drastic increases of tinnitus loudness following nap sleep. Previous studies have suggested that this clinical pattern could be attributed to a somatosensory modulation of tinnitus. To our knowledge, no polysomnographic study has been carried out to assess this hypothesis. METHODS: For this observational prospective study, 37 participants reporting frequent increases of t

The Relationship between Speech Sound Disorder and Cortical Auditory Evoked Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Speech sound disorder (SSD) is a speech and language disorder associated with difficulties in motor production, perception, and phonological representation of sounds and speech segments. Since auditory perception has a fundamental role in forming and organizing sound representation for its recognition, studies that evaluate the cortical processing of sounds are required. Thus, the present study aimed to verify the relation between SSD severity measured by the percentage of correct consonants (PCCs) with the cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) using speech stimulus. Neural correlates underlying local and global processing during visual search across adulthood.

Visual processing relies on the identification of both local and global features of visual stimuli. While well investigated at the behavioral level, the underlying brain mechanisms are less clear, especially in the context of aging. Using fMRI, we aimed to investigate the neural correlates underlying local and global processing in early and late adulthood. We recruited 77 healthy adults aged 19-77 who completed a visual search task based on 2-level hierarchical stimuli made of squares and/or circles. Participants were instructed to detect a target (a square) at either a local (small) or global

Differences in attentional bias between self-related information and external cues from others in individuals with social anxiety: An event-related potential study.

Individuals with high social anxiety show a more considerable attentional bias toward self-relevant information and outwardly threatening stimuli than do those with low social anxiety. Some studies have investigated the attentional bias between self-relevant information and external social cues in people with high social anxiety but have not reached consistent conclusions. This study used a modified dot-probe task and collected temporal and electroencephalogram responses to three self-other face pairs among 15 people with high social anxiety and 20 people with low social anxiety. Both groups r

The influence of cognitive load on susceptibility to audio.

In this study we evaluate how cognitive load affects susceptibility to auditory signals. Previous research has used the frontal P3 (fP3) event related potential response to auditory novel stimuli as an index for susceptibility to auditory signals. This work demonstrated that tasks that induce cognitive load such as visual and manual tasks, reduced susceptibility. It is however unknown whether cognitive load without visual or manual components also reduces susceptibility. To investigate this, we induced cognitive load by means of the verb generation task, in which participants need to think abo

Electrophysiological assessment of temporal envelope processing in cochlear implant users.

Cochlear-implant (CI) users rely on temporal envelope modulations (TEMs) to understand speech, and clinical outcomes depend on the accuracy with which these TEMs are encoded by the electrically-stimulated neural ensembles. Non-invasive EEG measures of this encoding could help clinicians identify and disable electrodes that evoke poor neural responses so as to improve CI outcomes. However, recording EEG during CI stimulation reveals huge stimulation artifacts that are up to orders of magnitude larger than the neural response. Here we used a custom-built EEG system having an exceptionally high s
