Risk factors for secondary hyperparathyroidism in a nursing home population.

OBJECTIVE: Secondary hyperparathyroidism may cause bone loss and structural deterioration of bone and may thus be a cause of fracture in the elderly. Vitamin D deficiency, renal impairment and medications are potential causes of hyperparathyroidism and may also directly predispose to fracture. We present the first findings of an ongoing study of hip fracture, vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism in a large Australian nursing home. DESIGN: Descriptive prevalence study. PATIENTS: Two hundred and fifty-one nursing home residents were eligible for inclusion. Informed consent and successf

Multivariate phenotyping reveals thermoregulatory patterns in crossbred cattle.

Improving the adaptation of beef cattle production to climate change requires crossbreeding strategies that enhance the ability of animals to maintain thermal stability under hot conditions. The objective of this exploratory study was to assess how coat characteristics are associated with rectal-temperature variation and to identify thermoregulatory patterns in Red Angus × Nelore crossbred cattle raised under tropical conditions. Thirty clinically healthy crossbred bulls from two genetic compositions (½ Red Angus × ½ Nelore and ¾ Red Angus × ¼ Nelore) were evaluated at 210 and 360 days of age.

Microbiomes of soils and leafy vegetables in urban agriculture systems reflect crop management and local environmental conditions.

Soil and plant microbiomes influence crop quality and preharvest food safety, yet these processes have been largely unexplored in urban agriculture environments. Here, we investigated how the microbiota of soil and leafy greens (e.g., kale, lettuce, chard, and cabbage) interact with site-specific management practices and environmental conditions across seven urban agriculture sites in the greater Washington, DC, area. Samples of leaf tissue (n = 92), rhizosphere soil (n = 92), and "native" or bulk soil (n = 39) were collected and analyzed with 16S rRNA gene and ITS2 genomic region amplicon seq

How Implementation Context Shapes Clinician Acceptance and Engagement with Guideline-Based Clinical Decision Support Systems in Primary Care: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Guideline-based clinical decision support (CDS) tools have become central to promoting evidence-based, high-quality primary care. Despite widespread implementation, clinician adoption and sustained use remain inconsistent. Existing research has typically examined technological usability or organizational implementation factors separately, providing limited understanding of how these influences interact in real-world primary care settings. This study examined how organizational implementation context and clinician technology acceptance jointly shape adoption and sustained use of gui

Chlorogenic Acid Alleviates Heat Stress-Induced Fetal Growth Restriction Through Gut-Placental Crosstalk by Reshaping Gut Microbiota and Mediating Keap1-Nrf2 Antioxidant Signaling.

BACKGROUND: Climate change-driven heat stress (HS) poses a growing threat to pregnancy outcomes; however, the mechanisms linking maternal HS to fetal growth restriction (FGR) remain incompletely understood, and effective nutritional interventions are lacking. The gut-placenta axis critically governs maternal-fetal health, but its role in mediating HS-related FGR has yet to be elucidated. METHODS: A murine model of gestational HS (38.5 °C, 2.5 h daily from E0.5 to E12.5) was established to investigate the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on HS-induced FGR. Placental efficiency, oxi

Understanding the genetic basis of resistance to maydis leaf blight and maturity-related traits in corn.

Maize is one of the most versatile and commercially produced crops used for food, feed, fodder, ethanol, oil, and industrial raw materials. Maize is affected by various diseases, but among these, maydis leaf blight (MLB) is one of the most serious diseases. The disease is caused by Cochliobolus heterostrophus and is responsible for yield losses up to 40%. When developing cultivars for a specific ecology, days to flowering and maturity are important breeding traits to consider. Thus, understanding the genetic basis of MLB resistance, specifically the "O" race of the pathogen, and maturity-relat
