Intimate Partner Violence.

IPV is a widespread and destructive public health problem that impacts women across the world and the lifespan. IPV encompasses a wide range of negative behaviors towards a person's romantic partner which include physical aggression, sexual violence, stalking, psychological torment, and coercive behaviors. Persons who experience IPV face a wide range of debilitating physical, mental health, and financial outcomes compared to those who have never experienced violence. Physicians play an important role in caring for patients who have experienced violence; knowledge of IPV's impact, consequences,

Clinical Considerations Related to the Behavioral Manifestations of Child Maltreatment.

Children who have suffered early abuse or neglect may later present with significant health and behavior problems that may persist long after the abusive or neglectful environment has been remediated. Neurobiological research suggests that early maltreatment may result in an altered psychological and physiologic response to stressful stimuli, a response that deleteriously affects the child's subsequent development. Pediatricians can assist caregivers by helping them recognize the abused or neglected child's emotional and behavioral responses associated with child maltreatment and guide them in

Rivastigmine in subcortical vascular dementia: a randomized, controlled, open 12-month study in 208 patients.

Subcortical vascular dementia (VaD) is characterized by executive dysfunction and behavioral problems, reflecting deterioration of the frontal lobe. This study aimed to determine whether rivastigmine, a dual inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyryl-cholinesterase (BuChE), has any effects on the typical symptoms of subcortical VaD. Patients receiving rivastigmine showed a slight improvement in executive functions and in behavior. Side effects in both groups were tolerable and there were no study withdrawals. Moreover, there are no drug interactions with other therapies previously an

Psychopathology and HIV risk behaviors among injection drug users in and out of treatment.

To replicate prior descriptions of injection drug users (IDUs), 158 IDUs recruited via a street-outreach program were compared to 320 non-IDUs on measures of substance use, lifetime psychopathology, and HIV risk behavior. IDUs were more likely to receive a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder, but not other psychiatric diagnoses, and to report dependence on multiple substances. IDUs reported more HIV risk behaviors, but perceived HIV risk did not differ from non-IDUs. Compared to IDUs who declined treatment, IDUs willing to accept treatment did not differ on drug-related problems, life

Type A behavior and magnesium metabolism.

An analysis of the literature suggests the possible role of Mg deficiency in the susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases, observed among subjects displaying a type A behavior pattern. Experimental data which support this hypothesis are reviewed. Type A subjects are more sensitive to stress and produce more catecholamines than type B subjects. This, in turn, seems to induce an intracellular Mg loss. In the long run, type A individuals would develop a state of Mg deficiency, which may promote a greater sensitivity to stress and, ultimately, lead to the development of cardiovascular problems. T

Paradox in psychotherapy: a cybernetic perspective.

Recent uses of the term "paradox" in the field of psychotherapy have distracted attention from the concept's broader implications. All therapy can be seen as paradoxical because of the recursive nature of self-evaluation. Using agoraphobic problems as illustrative, and starting from the notion that the core issue for the agoraphobic is a demand for absolute control of his environment, we argue that therapy requires the bonding of two observers--the therapist and the "client-as-observer". Negotiations issuing from this bond are crucial to outcome, even when behavioral techniques, often consider

Psychological models of self-mutilation.

The descriptive models of self-mutilation fall into three broad categories. The psychodynamic formulation; the second category includes the anxiety reduction model, the hostility model, the behavioral learning model and the appeal model; the third social learning category includes the group-epidemic model and aspects of the violence and punishment model. The three models support the view that there is no single cause or motive responsible for self-mutilating behavior. Having a number of factors in mind allows for flexibility and enables clinicians to test particular hypotheses during managemen

Sleep patterns and problems among children with 22q11 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: To delineate sleep habits and problems in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS). METHODS: Thirty children, age 1-15 (mean 6.8) years, participated in the study, which was an internet-based anonymous survey of parents of children with 22q11DS administered via the 22q11.2 Foundation. The main outcome was the Childhood Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). RESULTS: Scores on the CSHQ demonstrated clinically significant sleep problems in 29 of the 30 children. When compared with previously reported normative values for typically developing children of the same age, children

Unmasking Risky Habits: Identifying and Predicting Problem Gamblers Through Machine Learning Techniques.

The use of machine learning techniques to identify problem gamblers has been widely established. However, existing methods often rely on self-reported labeling, such as temporary self-exclusion or account closure. In this study, we propose a novel approach that combines two documented methods. First we create labels for problem gamblers in an unsupervised manner. Subsequently, we develop prediction models to identify these users in real-time. The methods presented in this study offer useful insights that can be leveraged to implement interventions aimed at guiding or discouraging players from

Longitudinal evaluation of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Huntington's disease.

A group of 111 patients with Huntington's disease (HD) underwent a minimum of three annual neuropsychiatric assessments, using the Problem Behaviors Assessment for Huntington's Disease (PBA-HD). Longitudinal prevalence of neuropsychiatric symptoms was notably higher than baseline prevalence, suggesting that previous studies may have underestimated the extent of this clinical problem. Moreover, apathy, irritability, and depression were each associated with distinct longitudinal profiles. Apathy progressed over time and across disease stages. Irritability also increased significantly, but only i…

From symptom relief to interpersonal change: Treatment outcome and effectiveness in inpatient psychotherapy.

This study evaluated the impact of psychodynamic inpatient psychotherapy on patients' psychological distress and interpersonal problems during the course of treatment and 1 year later. A total of 156 patients were assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems at intake, 4 weeks later, and at the end of therapy. The follow-up assessment was conducted 1 year later. Results support psychodynamic approaches as well as the phase model, which stresses that the goals to be achieved by psychotherapeutic interventions are not only improvement of well-being a

Relationship satisfaction and psychological distress among concerned significant others of pathological gamblers.

This study explores correlates of psychological distress and relationship satisfaction among concerned significant others (CSOs) of pathological gamblers. CSOs often seek help in dealing with the gambling problem and are influential in recovery, but little is known about the sources of their distress. A sample of 186 CSOs responded to media announcements offering telephone and bibliotherapy support. In multivariate models, CSOs who were spouses and who were younger reported more personal distress, and higher distress was associated with a greater number of CSO emotional and behavioral conseque

What framework should we use for understanding developmental disorders?

The neuropsychology of dyslexia has made great strides in the last decade. In particular, a consensus views dyslexia as a developmental disorder with a basis in the brain and in the genes, where the interaction of genetic and environmental factors is taken for granted. However, problems in defining the phenotype continue to bedevil research. The main conceptual problems can be expressed in three main questions: (a) Is dyslexia based on a specific brain abnormality or is it merely part of a continuum of atypical brain development? (b) When can we speak of comorbidity? (c) Why does so much indiv

Learning difficulties in children with Tourette syndrome.

Children with Tourette syndrome have been shown to have a variety of school difficulties. These difficulties, however, may be related to a single factor or to a combination of problems including tic severity, the use of tic-suppressing medication, executive dysfunction, a direct consequence of having a stigmatizing disorder, and coexisting attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, or other psychopathologies. The goals for the treating health care team are to identify the presence of these factors, to clarify which are the major source of distress, and to develo

Visual training, the alpha activation cycle and reading.

Two patients with visual problems and reading difficulties originally unable to suppress alpha have been shown to demonstrate alpha rhythm attenuation during the course of and after a program of visual training with simultaneous improvement in reading performance. No direct training of alpha attenuation was engaged in. No other therapy directed toward solution of the patients reading or behavior problems was attempted during the course of visual training. It is concluded that the change in alpha activation and the improvement in reading were both brought about by the combined visual therapy an

Psychiatric consequences of motor vehicle accidents.

Psychiatric complaints are frequent following motor vehicle accidents and may be major predictors of persistent pain and other complaints. Outcomes are not related closely to the nature or severity of any medical injury. Psychiatric problems often are unrecognized and untreated. There is a need for more behaviorally inferred routine care, early recognition of complications, and the use of psychological and pharmacological interventions.

Sociodemographic Characteristics and Behavioral Outcomes in Infants With Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Treated With Therapeutic Hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: In infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) treated with therapeutic hypothermia, the frequency, characteristics, and social risk factors for atypical behavior are poorly understood. METHODS: Secondary analysis of the High-Dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and Encephalopathy (HEAL) trial. Atypical behavior defined as >= one clinically significant behavior on the parent-reported Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) at age two years. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between atypical behavior and sociodemographic, maternal, and infant factors. RESULTS: Am

Childhood family adversity and adult cortisol response: The role of observed marital conflict behavior.

Childhood family adversity predicts adult interpersonal behavior and physiological responses to interpersonal stress. Additionally, negative marital behaviors (e.g., hostility and distress maintaining attributions) predict maladaptive stress responses and mental health problems, whereas positive marital behaviors (e.g., acceptance and relationship enhancing attributions) predict adaptive physiological and psychological outcomes. The present study examined potential marital behavior mediators and moderators of the link between childhood adversity and cortisol responses to conflict. In a sample

The Role of Personal Values in Gambling: A Preliminary Study with Italian Adolescents.

Values have been defined as trans-situational goals that serve as guiding principles in people's life to select modes, means, and actions. Despite values being relevant predictors of behaviors, their role in shaping adolescents' gambling ones has been under investigated. Specifically, the present study aimed at exploring whether and which values may be protective or risk factors for gambling behaviors, this also considering gender differences. Respondents were 237 adolescents (aged from 14 to 19; 58.2% female), recruited from three Italian high schools, who were asked to fill in a self-report
