Chondrolysis of the hip complicating slipped capital femoral epiphysis: long-term follow-up of nine patients.

Nine patients with chondrolysis secondary to slipped capital femoral epiphysis of the hip were followed up from a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 19 years (average, 13.7 years) after the onset of the disease. The degree of slipping of the proximal epiphysis of the femur was severe in five patients and moderately severe in four patients. The nine patients were treated with non-weight bearing, antiinflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. The disease had a good resolution, with gradual regression of pain, and radiographs showed restoration of the joint space in an average of 10 months. At follow-up

Distal tibial triplane fractures: long-term follow-up.

The cases of 35 patients in whom a triplane fracture had been treated at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital were reviewed. The diagnosis of biplane and triplane fracture can now be made by standard radiograph. However, plain radiographs alone did not accurately demonstrate the configuration of the fracture, and computed tomography must be performed. Closed reduction should be attempted first. Failure to obtain or maintain (or both) an adequate closed reduction is an indication for operative treatment. Prognosis is surprisingly good. Only when adequate reduction (< 2 mm displacement) has not been achie

Genu recurvatum following distal epiphysiodesis of the femur: X-ray evaluation and therapeutical approach.

UNLABELLED: Acquired genu recurvatum may have bone, capsulo-ligamentous or combined origins. It may affect the tibia or femur and various etiologies are possible. However, its pathogenesis is often linked to partial anterior epiphysiodesis following traumatic damage to the femoral or tibial growth plate. In this study we examine femoral recurvatum, a form which occurs only rarely. The clinical and radiographic characteristics are described in depth and the surgical indications for correction of this deformity are defined. Radiographic examination was used to complete the goniometry of the recu

Elastic intramedullary nailing for recurrent radial fracture associated with persistent ulnar bowing deformity in a pediatric patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric forearm bowing fracture is an occult incomplete injury with a high misdiagnosis rate. Persistent ulnar bowing deformity is a potential risk factor for recurrent radial fracture due to altered forearm biomechanical stress distribution, and unified management protocols for this combined injury remain lacking. This case report describes the diagnosis and treatment of an 8-year-old girl who sustained a second ipsilateral radial fracture four years after an initial forearm trauma accompanied by ulnar bowing deformity at 4 years old, aiming to provide practical clinical evidenc

Endocrine-informed monitoring of scoliosis in Prader-Willi syndrome: integrating neuroendocrine pathophysiology, growth hormone therapy, and pubertal transition.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neuroendocrine disorder characterized by hypothalamic dysfunction, congenital hypotonia, abnormal growth trajectories, and impaired pubertal development, all of which contribute to a markedly increased risk of scoliosis, with a cumulative prevalence reaching up to 70-80% by skeletal maturity, significantly exceeding that of idiopathic scoliosis. Unlike idiopathic scoliosis, spinal deformity in PWS follows a distinct bimodal pattern, with critical vulnerability during infancy and a second acceleration during pubertal transition. Growth hormone (GH) therapy, a co

A bovine model of rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata caused by a deep intronic splicing variant in the GNPAT gene.

BACKGROUND: Genetic defects that occur naturally in livestock species provide valuable models for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying rare human diseases. Livestock breeds are subject to the regular emergence of recessive genetic defects due to genetic drift and recent inbreeding. At the same time, their large population sizes provide easy access to case and control individuals and to massive amounts of pedigree, genomic and phenotypic information recorded for management and selection purposes. In this study, we investigated a lethal form of recessive chondrodysplasia observed in

Femora of women with premature ovarian insufficiency exhibit reduced strength and misalignment with the transmitted vertical forces from the upper body.

BACKGROUND: Women with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) lack oestrogen, which is a key determinant of bone growth, epiphyseal closure, and bone tissue organisation. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-derived areal bone mineral density (BMD) remains the gold standard for fracture risk evaluation, it does not fully characterise the skeletal abnormalities present in these women. Hence, we aimed to assess hip/femur anatomy, strength, and geometry and femoral alignment using advanced hip analysis (AHA). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, case-control study including 89 wome

Scanning and three-dimensional-printing using computed tomography of the "Golden Boy" mummy.

Ancient Egyptian mummies represent an opportunity to learn more about the health, beliefs, and skills of humans in antiquity. A fully wrapped mummy, from a Late Ptolemaic cemetery (c.332-30 BC) in Edfu, Egypt, has been stored, unexamined, at the Cairo Egyptian Museum since 1916. We hypothesized that scanning and 3D-printing the mummy using Computed Tomography (CT) could help in documenting and promoting its public display. CT enabled non-invasive digital unwrapping and revealed a well-preserved mummy. Biological sex could be determined from the presence of male genitalia; epiphyseal fusion and

Longitudinal Change in Bone Density, Geometry, and Estimated Bone Strength in Older Men and Women From The Gambia: Findings From the Gambian Bone and Muscle Aging Study (GamBAS).

Musculoskeletal aging in the most resource-limited countries has not been quantified, and longitudinal data are urgently needed to inform policy. The aim of this prospective study was to describe musculoskeletal aging in Gambian adults. A total of 488 participants were recruited stratified by sex and 5-year age band (aged 40 years and older); 386 attended follow-up 1.7 years later. Outcomes were dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) (n = 383) total hip areal bone mineral density (aBMD), bone mineral content (BMC), bone area (BA); peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) diaphyseal a

A registry of achondroplasia: a 6-year experience from the Czechia and Slovak Republic.

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia (ACH) is one of the most prevalent genetic forms of short-limbed skeletal dysplasia, caused by gain-of-function mutations in the receptor tyrosine kinase FGFR3. In August 2021, the C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) analog vosoritide was approved for the treatment of ACH. A total of six other inhibitors of FGFR3 signaling are currently undergoing clinical evaluation for ACH. This progress creates an opportunity for children with ACH, who may gain early access to the treatment by entering clinical trials before the closure of their epiphyseal growth plates and cessation

Accelerated Development With Increased Bone Mass and Skeletal Response to Loading Suggest Receptor Activity Modifying Protein-3 as a Bone Anabolic Target.

Knockout technologies provide insights into physiological roles of genes. Studies initiated into endocrinology of heteromeric G protein-coupled receptors included deletion of receptor activity modifying protein-3, an accessory protein that alters ligand selectivity of calcitonin and calcitonin-like receptors. Initially, deletion of Ramp3-/- appeared phenotypically silent, but it has emerged that mice have a high bone mass phenotype, and more subtle alterations to angiogenesis, amylin homeostasis, and a small proportion of the effects of adrenomedullin on cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. Outpatient Bryant's Overhead Traction Does Not Affect the Rate of Open Reduction or Avascular Necrosis in Developmental Dislocation of the Hip.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of preliminary traction to increase the likelihood of closed reduction and/or decrease the incidence of avascular necrosis in the management of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is controversial. We sought to document compliance with and effectiveness of Bryant's outpatient traction in patients with idiopathic DDH. METHODS: Patients presenting between 6 and 24 months of age with idiopathic irreducible DDH were prospectively enrolled in the study. Prereduction outpatient traction was prescribed at participating surgeons' preference and parents' expressed willing

Tibial Tubercle Apophyseal Stage to Determine Skeletal Age in Pediatric Patients Undergoing ACL Reconstruction: A Validation and Reliability Study.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries demand individualized treatments based on an accurate estimation of the child's skeletal age. Wrist radiographs, which have traditionally been used to determine skeletal age, have a number of limitations, including cost, radiation exposure, and inconvenience. PURPOSE: To evaluate the reliability and validity of a radiographic staging system using tibial apophyseal landmarks as hypothetical proxies for skeletal age to use in the preoperative management of pediatric ACL tears. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diagnosis); Level of evidence, 2. M

Functional outcome in giant cell tumor of distal radius treated with excision and fibular arthroplasty: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a locally aggressive benign neoplasm that is associated with a wide spectrum of biological activity ranging from latent benign to highly recurrent and has occasional metastatic potential. It affects the meta-epiphyseal region of long bones of young adults with most common site involved is the distal femur, followed by the distal radius. Plain radiographs and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging are the imaging modalities widely used followed by definite histopathology for diagnosis. Surgical treatment with curettage is considered optimal
