A machine learning approach for differentiating malignant from benign enhancing foci on breast MRI.

BACKGROUND: Differentiate malignant from benign enhancing foci on breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) through radiomic signature. METHODS: Forty-five enhancing foci in 45 patients were included in this retrospective study, with needle biopsy or imaging follow-up serving as a reference standard. There were 12 malignant and 33 benign lesions. Eight benign lesions confirmed by over 5-year negative follow-up and 15 malignant histopathologically confirmed lesions were added to the dataset to provide reference cases to the machine learning analysis. All MRI examinations were performed with a 1.

Placental vascular tree characterization based on ex-vivo MRI with a potential application for placental insufficiency assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding regarding the whole placental vascular network structure is limited. Our aim was to quantitatively characterize the human placental vascular tree ex-vivo using high-resolution MRI. METHODS: 34 normal placentas were rinsed and injected with a solution of gelatin and contrast agent through the umbilical vessels. A sample of six placentas taken from pregnancies with intrauterine-growth-restriction (IUGR) was used to demonstrate the potential application to cases with placental insufficiency. Structural ex-vivo MR scans of the placenta were performed using high resolut

Subiculum volumes associated with memory function in the oldest-old individuals aged 95 years and older.

AIM: Few cohort studies targeting the oldest-old individuals have been carried out. The subiculum in the hippocampus is thought to be related to memory function, and atrophy of this structure might result in the conversion from amnestic mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease. Thus, we sought to examine the relationship between subiculum volumes and memory function in individuals aged ≥95 years, using a novel cognitive examination called the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) and an advanced magnetic resonance imaging analytical method, Multiple Automatically Generated

Predication of different stages of Alzheimer's disease using neighborhood component analysis and ensemble decision tree.

BACKGROUND: There is a spectrum of the progression from healthy control (HC) to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) without conversion to Alzheimer's disease (AD), to MCI with conversion to AD (cMCI), and to AD. This study aims to predict the different disease stages using brain structural information provided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. NEW METHOD: The neighborhood component analysis (NCA) is applied to select most powerful features for prediction. The ensemble decision tree classifier is built to predict which group the subject belongs to. The best features and model parameters ar

Brainstem Pain-Control Circuitry Connectivity in Chronic Neuropathic Pain.

Preclinical investigations have suggested that altered functioning of brainstem pain-modulation circuits may be crucial for the maintenance of some chronic pain conditions. While some human psychophysical studies show that patients with chronic pain display altered pain-modulation efficacy, it remains unknown whether brainstem pain-modulation circuits are altered in individuals with chronic pain. The aim of the present investigation was to determine whether, in humans, chronic pain following nerve injury is associated with altered ongoing functioning of the brainstem descending modulation syst

Computer-Aided Diagnosis Scheme for Distinguishing Between Benign and Malignant Masses in Breast DCE-MRI.

Our purpose in this study was to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) scheme for distinguishing between benign and malignant breast masses in dynamic contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI). Our database consisted 90 DCE-MRI examinations, each of which contained four sequential phase images; this database included 28 benign masses and 62 malignant masses. In our CAD scheme, we first determined 11 objective features of masses by taking into account the image features and the dynamic changes in signal intensity that experienced radiologists commonly use for describing

Using Anatomic Intelligence to Localize Mitral Valve Prolapse on Three-Dimensional Echocardiography.

BACKGROUND: Accurate localization of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is crucial for surgical planning. Despite improved visualization of the mitral valve by three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography, image interpretation remains expertise dependent. Manual construction of mitral valve topographic maps improves diagnostic accuracy but is time-consuming and requires substantial manual input. A novel computer-learning technique called Anatomical Intelligence in ultrasound (AIUS) semiautomatically tracks the annulus and leaflet anatomy for parametric analysis. The aims of this study were to e

Automated segmentation of liver and liver cysts from bounded abdominal MR images in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Liver and liver cyst volume measurements are important quantitative imaging biomarkers for assessment of disease progression in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and polycystic liver disease (PLD). To date, no study has presented automated segmentation and volumetric computation of liver and liver cysts in these populations. In this paper, we proposed an automated segmentation framework for liver and liver cysts from bounded abdominal MR images in patients with ADPKD. To model the shape and variations in ADPKD livers, the spatial prior probability map (SPPM) of liver locatio

Corticopontocerebellar Connectivity Disruption in Congenital Hemiplegia.

BACKGROUND: Crossed cerebellar diaschisis is the disruption of functional connectivity between cerebrum and cerebellum after hemispheric unilateral brain lesions. In adults and to a lesser extent in children, crossed cerebellar diaschisis has been largely investigated by functional connectivity and demonstrated to influence paretic hand function. OBJECTIVE: We aim to demonstrate a disruption in structural corticopontocerebellar (CPC) connectivity in children with congenital brain lesions and examine its correlation with paretic hand motor function. METHODS: Thirty-six children (Manual Abilit
