Vascular Morphology Motivated Progressive Structure-Enhanced Restoration for Sparse-view 3D-DSA.

Three-dimensional digital subtraction angiography (3D-DSA) is a key technique for the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. The conventional dense-view acquisition is time-consuming and delivers a non-negligible radiation dose to both patients and doctors, making sparse-view acquisition a highly promising solution. However, sparse sampling induces severe streak artifacts in 3D-DSA images, thereby affecting subsequent treatment procedures. To address these issues, this study presents a Progressive Structure-Enhanced Restoration (PSER) framework for sparse-view 3D-DSA. First, a 3D

Does clinical documentation reflect how parents and clinicians share decisions about surgery?

BACKGROUND: While use of shared decision-making (SDM) is widely accepted and applied in practice, it is unknown how core elements of SDM are reflected in clinical documentation. This knowledge gap is particularly relevant in the setting of surgery in children, where parents serve as proxy decision-makers. METHODS: We analyzed transcribed audio-recorded outpatient encounters and corresponding medical documentation for pediatric patients undergoing evaluation for elective surgery. Visit transcripts and medical record documentation of the corresponding clinical encounter were coded for two core

Development and external validation of an interpretable machine learning model for predicting prolonged postoperative ICU length of stay in coronary artery bypass grafting patients using MIMIC-IV 3.1 and eICU-CRD 2.0.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) drives resource use yet remains difficult to anticipate at the 24-hour ICU evaluation moment when extended monitoring beyond 72 h is first considered. We developed and externally validated an interpretable machine-learning decision-support calculator for this deployment moment. METHODS: Adult CABG patients were identified from MIMIC-IV 3.1 (n = 6,919; 7:3 stratified split for development) and eICU-CRD 2.0 (n = 5,972; external validation). The outcome was prolonged IC

A Real-time Scale-robust Network for Glottis Segmentation in Nasal Transnasal Intubation.

Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is a critical clinical procedure for establishing and maintaining patient airway patency. Machine-assisted NTI has emerged as a pivotal approach for optimizing procedural efficiency and minimizing manual intervention. However, visual detection algorithms employed for NTI navigation encounter significant challenges, including complex anatomical environments and suboptimal illumination conditions surrounding the glottis. Additionally, the glottis presents considerable scale variability throughout the procedure, initially appearing as a small, difficult-to-capture st

PreMemMoRF: A pretraining-fine-tuning framework for predicting membrane molecular recognition features.

Membrane molecular recognition features (MemMoRFs) are lipid-binding intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) that undergo disorder-to-order transitions to mediate critical membrane dynamics. Consequently, their dysregulation is closely linked to severe human pathologies, including neurodegenerative diseases and viral infections. Despite their biological significance, annotations for MemMoRFs are scarce, limiting the accuracy of computational predictors. We introduce PreMemMoRF, a deep learning framework that leverages transfer learning to alleviate data scarcity. The model is pre-trained on li

Systematic review of machine learning approaches for predicting sickle cell crisis and mortality risk at the climate-health nexus.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a severe genetic blood disorder characterized by recurrent vaso-occlusive crises and increased mortality, with the greatest burden occurring in low- and middle-income countries. Climatic and environmental conditions, including temperature variability, humidity, rainfall, air pollution, and seasonal changes, have been associated with disease exacerbation. However, the extent to which these factors have been incorporated into predictive models remains unclear. This study systematically reviews the application of machine learning (ML) models for predicting

GATPDD: An Enhanced Deep Learning Framework for Predicting Drug-Parasitic Disease Associations.

Parasitic diseases pose a significant threat to human health. Accurate and robust prediction of drug-parasitic disease associations is critical to advancing drug discovery and developing parasitic disease therapies. However, biomedical data in this field is often too scarce to train a generalized machine learning model. Although computational methods have been developed for predicting potential drug-parasitic disease associations, their performances were restricted owing to data limitation. Here we propose a deep learning framework entitled GATPDD for improving drug-parasitic disease associati

AI-Based Diagnostic Platform Capabilities With Lyme Disease as a Use Case: Integrative Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. It is difficult to diagnose because it can mimic numerous other conditions, and testing protocols may not be sufficient. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend a 2-tiered serologic testing approach for LD diagnosis, many patients are diagnosed clinically based on criteria such as the erythema migrans rash and, particularly when the rash is not present, various symptom patterns, exposure history, other information, and clinician observations. Against this backdrop, online

Deep learning analysis of 12-lead electrocardiograms for bloodstream infection prediction: a multi-center validation study.

BACKGROUND: Prompt diagnosis of bloodstream infections (BSIs) is critical for antimicrobial stewardship but hindered by blood culture delays of 48 h or more. We developed and validated a deep learning model to predict BSI risk from standard 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). METHODS: This study adhered to the Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) guidelines. In this retrospective, multi-center study, we trained a deep learning model to predict clinically significant BSIs (excluding common contaminants) using ECGs from adult em

Multi-Property Optimization of Antimicrobial Peptides Using Reinforcement Learning and Conditional Independence Regularization.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as a compelling alternative to conventional antibiotics, offering broad-spectrum activity against bacterial and viral infections while addressing antimicrobial resistance. However, the design of AMPs that simultaneously satisfy multiple functional properties remains a critical challenge, hindered by the high-dimensional complexity representation of their latent space. In this study, we propose CAMP-RL, a conditional generative model for de novo AMP generation and optimization. CAMP-RL integrates reinforcement learning (RL) and conditional independence

Machine learning based model for the detection of multiple sclerosis from OCT-derived macular and optic disc retinal biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease characterized by inflammatory demyelination and progressive neuroaxonal damage. Retinal layer thickness in the macular and optic disc regions, measurable using optical coherence tomography (OCT), might be considered as a promising non-invasive biomarker for detecting MS-related neurodegeneration. METHODS: In this study, we present a novel AI framework leveraging macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCL-IPL) and Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) thickness across sectors (covering [Formula: see text]) and peripapillary

scDrugLink: Single-Cell Drug Repurposing for CNS Diseases via Computationally Linking Drug Targets and Perturbation Signatures.

Central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as glioblastoma (GBM), multiple sclerosis (MS), and Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain challenging due to their complexity and limited treatments. Conventional drug repurposing strategies often rely on bulk RNA sequencing data, which can overlook cellular heterogeneity and mask rare but critical cell populations. Here, we introduce scDrugLink, a computational method that integrates single-cell transcriptomic data with drug targets and perturbation signatures to improve repurposing. For each cell type, scDrugLink constructs a Drug2Cell matrix based on dru

Rethinking Data Augmentation for Single-Source Domain Generalization in OCT Image Segmentation.

Domain shifts between samples acquired with different instruments are one of the major challenges in accurate segmentation of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images. Given that OCT images may be acquired with different devices in different clinical centers, this study presents astyle and structure data augmentation (SSDA) method to improve the adaptability of segmentation models. Inspired by our initial analysis of OCT domain differences, we propose an innovative hypothesis that domain shifts are primarily due to differences in image style and anatomical structure, which further guides the
