Epidemiology of orthopedic injuries among inpatients admitted at a tertiary teaching and referral hospital in Kenya: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic injuries are serious and continue to be a concern for healthcare systems worldwide. Approximately 90% of the estimated traumatic injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries. In Kenya, there is a dearth of information on orthopedic injury patterns that could be used to prioritize injury prevention measures and to help hospital management teams allocate resources appropriately. The purpose of this study was to determine the epidemiology of orthopedic injuries admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital. METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Overall, 7

Health status among greenhouse workers exposed to different levels of pesticides: A genetic matching analysis.

(1) Objective: Greenhouse workers are considered a special occupational group who are exposed to more toxic and harmful substances than ordinary farmers. The health problem of this group is a public health problem that warrants attention. Taking greenhouse workers in Ningxia, China, as the research sample, this study analyzed the health risk to practitioners posed by the greenhouse working environment. (2) Method: To analyze the relationship between pesticide exposure and the health of greenhouse workers, the genetic matching method was used to exclude the influence of covariates on the result

Three-Dimensional Evaluation and Classification of the Anatomy Variations of Vertebral Artery at the Craniovertebral Junction in 120 Patients of Basilar Invagination and Atlas Occipitalization.

BACKGROUND: Patients with basilar invagination and atlas occipitalization usually present abnormal anatomy of the vertebral arteries (VAs) at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ). OBJECTIVE: To describe and further classify different types of VA variations at the CVJ with 3D visualization technology. METHODS: One hundred twenty patients with basilar invagination and atlas occipitalization who had undergone 3-dimensional computed tomographic angiography (3D-CTA) were retrospectively studied. Imaging data were processed via the separating, fusing, opacifying, and false-coloring-volume rendering

Assessing the Need for Preprocedural Laboratory Tests and Stopping Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs/Aspirin in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Bone and Soft Tissue Biopsies.

PURPOSE: Although image-guided biopsies of bone and soft tissue lesions have a low complication rate, there is limited data evaluating use of preprocedural laboratory tests. To address this issue, patients were not required to stop non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and aspirin or to obtain preprocedural laboratory tests [complete blood count (CBC) and international normalized ratio (INR)], except in special circumstances. The bleeding complication rate, rate of same day biopsies, and the time from when the biopsy was ordered to when it was performed were obtained. MATERIALS AND ME

Contribution of job-exposure matrices for exposure assessment in occupational safety and health monitoring systems: application from the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network.

OBJECTIVES: To detect new hazards ("signals"), occupational health monitoring systems mostly rest on the description of exposures in the jobs held and on reports by medical doctors; these are subject to declarative bias. Our study aims to assess whether job-exposure matrices (JEMs) could be useful tools for signal detection by improving exposure reporting. METHODS: Using the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network (RNV3P) data from 2001 to 2011, we explored the associations between disease and exposure prevalence for 3 well-known pathology/exposure couples and

Musculoskeletal abnormalities of the tibia in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize local bone geometry, density, and strength, using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT), compared with general bone characteristics as measured using dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and to assess their relationship to disease-related factors in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). METHODS: Forty-eight children ages 4-18 years with JRA (17 pauciarticular, 23 polyarticular, 8 systemic) were compared with age-matched healthy controls (n = 266). Measurements included cortical and trabecular bone geometry, density, and strength at the distal a

Determinates of functional disability after complex upper extremity trauma.

This is a retrospective chart review of 71 patients who were operated on for presumed upper extremity arterial trauma between June 1992 and June 1998. Penetrating trauma occurred in 50 (70%) patients, and blunt trauma in 21 (30%). There were 2 innominate, 6 subclavian, 13 axillary, 26 brachial, 5 radial, 6 ulnar, and 6 multiple arterial injuries. There were 7 negative explorations (4 venous injuries, 2 false-positive angiograms, and 1 branch artery injury). In addition to the vascular injury, 44 patients (69%) had another injury in the extremity, including 8 (12.5%) orthopedic injuries, 12 (19

Acetabular Reconstruction With Femoral Head Autograft After Intraarticular Resection of Periacetabular Tumors is Durable at Short-term Followup.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic reconstruction after periacetabular tumor resection is technically difficult and characterized by a high complication rate. Although endoprosthetic replacement can result in immediate postoperative functional recovery, biologic reconstructions with autograft may provide an enhanced prognosis in patients with long-term survival; however, little has been published regarding this approach. We therefore wished to evaluate whether whole-bulk femoral head autograft that is not contaminated by tumor can be used to reconstruct segmental bone defects after intraarticular resection of

Feasibility of the Meta Quest 3 for upper limb kinematic analysis: accuracy, consistency, agreement and reliability.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb motor impairment is a frequent long-term consequence of a wide range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Accurate assessment of motor function is essential to determine patient's condition and plan adequate interventions. While clinical scales are easy to administer and not time-consuming, they could have limited accuracy and be biased. Kinematic analysis can provide detailed, quantitative information but usually depends on expensive, complex, and non-portable systems. Recent virtual reality head-mounted displays, with integrated hand-tracking, offer a promis

Long-term clinical sequelae among Sudan ebolavirus disease survivors 2 years post-infection: a matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The long-term health effects of ebolavirus disease (EVD) caused by the Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV) strain remain poorly characterized. Here, we assessed the nature, frequency, and persistence of post-EVD clinical symptoms among SUDV survivors 2 years after infection by comparing them with matched community controls. METHODS: The primary objective was determining the prevalence of clinical symptoms over the 24-month period. Using a prospective matched cohort approach, 87 laboratory-confirmed SUDV survivors from the 2022-2023 Ugandan outbreak and 176 age-, sex- and village-matched contr

Aerospace stressors and brain health in military aviators: a glymphatic-neurovascular framework.

Military aviation exposes aircrew to interacting physiological and operational stressors that are often studied in isolation. These stressors are experienced by the whole body: pulmonary, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, endocrine, and immune responses may influence cerebral perfusion, blood-brain barrier function, fatigue, and recovery. Evidence from aviation cohorts, altitude-chamber studies, and adjacent fields suggests that some exposures may converge on neurovascular, blood-brain barrier, perivascular, and inflammatory pathways before overt neurological disease is apparent. This narrative

From Collaboration to Identity: The Role of Social Norms and Interdependence in Medical Students.

Social Interdependence Theory posits that cooperative behavior emerges when individuals perceive that their outcomes depend on the actions of others, a dynamic that is central to collaborative learning in medical education. Professional identity formation is recognized as a key developmental process during early medical training; however, quantitative evidence examining its association with collaborative interdependence in preclinical cohorts remains limited. This cross-sectional, correlational, non-experimental study examined the associations between perceived social interdependence and profe

Value and Use of Pediatric Postmortem Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for postmortem investigations of fetal and pediatric deaths involving neurological pathologies is a traditional autopsy; however, acquiring all diagnostic information from an autopsy alone can be challenging. In addition, there are substantial obstacles to performing traditional autopsies on the pediatric population such as parental opinion, religious beliefs, and cultural backgrounds. Postmortem computed tomography, sonography, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging are less invasive alternative approaches for investigating central nervous system-related deaths. Alt

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and MRI in the Evaluation of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Review.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is the primary dose-limiting toxicity in albumin-bound paclitaxel chemotherapy regimens. Current assessment methods based on clinical scales are limited by strong subjectivity and insufficient sensitivity, while most emerging technologies remain in the preclinical stage. Therefore, the development of objective and non-invasive imaging biomarkers is urgently needed. This review focuses on the transformative role of non-invasive imaging techniques in addressing unmet clinical needs such as the accurate imaging assessment of CIPN, and systematical

Understanding Energy Expenditure: An Approach to Improving Activities of Daily Living in Huntington's Disease.

Background/Objective: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and psychiatric symptoms. As the disease progresses, weight loss, cachexia, and musculoskeletal atrophy are common, reducing quality of life, decreasing their autonomy in their activities of daily living (ADLs), and increasing morbidity and mortality risk. To describe and compare energy expenditure (EE) during ADLs and resting conditions in individuals with HD and healthy controls, and to examine its associations with quality of life, cog

Musculoskeletal Adverse Events Associated With Bempedoic Acid: A Real-World Pharmacovigilance Study.

Musculoskeletal adverse reactions (MAEs) caused by statins are the main reason that limits their clinical application. Bempedoic acid provides an alternative treatment option for patients who cannot tolerate statins as a novel oral lipid-lowering drug. The objective of this study was to perform data mining using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) to realistically observe and systematically summarize bempedoic acid-related MAEs in the real world. The FAERS database from the first quarter of 2020 to the fourth quarter of 2024 was retrospectively queried to characterize reporting of M

Three-dimensional gait analysis following surgical correction of proximal femoral type IV fibrous dysplasia with varus deformity.

This study aimed to analyse postoperative gait characteristics in patients with fibrous dysplasia (FD) of the proximal femur with varus deformity and to comprehensively assess limb function. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent surgical correction between January 2013 and October 2017. Limb length discrepancy and mechanical axis alignment were evaluated at follow-up. Gait parameters of both lower limbs were assessed using a three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis system, and the affected side was compared with the contralateral limb. Limb alignment and length were largely restored,
