Morphological analysis of Whitnall's tubercle: an anatomical landmark in orbital surgery.

The orbital tubercle, also known as Whitnall's tubercle, was first described by S.E. Whitnall in 1911 and is a significant anatomical landmark on the zygomatic bone that serves various structural and clinical functions. Understanding its anatomy is essential for protecting adjacent soft tissues during surgical procedures and its role in forensic studies. This study aims to assess the prevalence, precise location, and morphological characteristics of Whitnall's tubercle in adult human skulls. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 108 orbital fossae of 54 well-preserved adult hu…

Emergent Inductance from Chiral Orbital Currents in a Bulk Ferrimagnet.

We report the discovery of a new form of inductance in the bulk ferrimagnet Mn_{3}Si_{2}Te_{6}, which features strong spin-orbit coupling, large magnetic anisotropy, and pronounced magnetoelastic interactions. Below its Curie temperature (T_{C}≈78  K), Mn_{3}Si_{2}Te_{6} hosts chiral orbital currents (COC) that circulate within the crystal lattice and give rise to collective electronic behavior [Control of chiral orbital currents in a colossal magnetoresistance material, Nature (London) 611, 467 (2022).NATUAS0028-083610.1038/s41586-022-05262-3]. Skyrmions with multiple topological charges as orbital angular momentum encoders.

Magnons carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) hold great potential for orbitronics, optics, and communications, but the generation of such magnons poses great challenges. In this work, we propose that magnons with intrinsic OAM can be induced by antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions with multiple topological charges (Q). The proposal is demonstrated in a tetragonal lattice frustrated AFM film, where magnetic anisotropy governs the formation of multiple-Q skyrmions. Out-of-plane polarized current induces ultrafast skyrmion helicity oscillation, which enables excitation of multipolar spi…

Development and validation of a surgical robot system for orbital decompression surgery.

PURPOSE: Orbital decompression surgery, which expands the volume of the orbit by removing sections of the orbital walls with a drill and saw, is an important treatment option for thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy. However, it is often limited by physical factors such as a narrow operating space and instability of the manual holding of surgical instruments, which constrains doctors from accurately executing surgical planning. METHODS: To overcome these limitations, we designed a surgical robot comprising position adjustment, remote center of motion, and end-effector with a rapid surgical instr…

Coronoid-Temporalis Pedicled Flap for Orbital Floor Defect Reconstruction.

Orbital floor defects may result from maxillary trauma or tumor resection. Traditional reconstruction techniques often rely on vascularized or non-vascularized free bone grafts, which carry risks of graft failure due to thrombosis, infection, or poor integration. This protocol introduces a novel technique using a coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap (CTPF) for repairing small-to-medium orbital floor defects. The protocol involves harvesting the coronoid process with its attached temporalis muscle pedicle, transposing the flap to the orbital floor, contouring the bone to fit the defect, and achiev…

Anatomical insights: meningo-orbital foramen and its clinical relevance.

OBJECTIVES: The meningo-orbital foramen (MOF) is an inconsistently present bony canal that connects the orbit with the cranial cavity, commonly the middle cranial fossa. It may transmit the meningolacrimal artery supplying orbital contents, making it clinically relevant in procedures involving the lateral orbital wall. This study aimed to investigate the morphometry and anatomical positioning of the MOF and discuss its surgical implications. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A total of 127 adult dry human skulls (254 orbits) were examined. Gender was estimated morphometrically, while ethnicity was unknow…

NCI orbital decomposition and critical comparison to local correlation schemes.

In this study, we introduce novel orbital decomposition approaches for analyzing non-covalent interactions (NCIs) and dispersion interaction densities (DID), termed o-NCI and o-DID, respectively. Orbital pair analyses offers an opportunity to analyse in-depth NCIs in four model dimer systems to which dispersion forces contribute to different extents: argon, methane, water and benzene-acetylene dimers. The comparative calculations reveal that intuitive interpretations based solely on nearby σ- and π-orbital interactions may overlook substantial contributions from more distant orbitals. For inst…

Zygoma Fractures: When Should You Repair the Orbital Floor?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) is one of the most commonly fractured areas of the midface. As the zygoma is an inherent component of the orbit, any fracture of the ZMC naturally involves the orbital floor. Previous research has focused on the surgical outcomes and complications of zygomatic fractures, but few have explored indications for orbital floor exploration alongside zygoma reduction. This study evaluates whether specific clinical and radiographic parameters predict the need for orbital floor reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted o…
