Saccade dynamics in peripheral vs central sixth nerve palsies.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate differences between peripheral idiopathic and central sixth nerve palsies from brainstem damage by comparing peak velocities and durations of horizontal saccades. METHODS: Fourteen patients with unilateral incomplete sixth nerve palsies caused by idiopathic, presumed ischemic, peripheral damage, 5 with incomplete central (fascicular) palsy caused by brainstem lesions, and 10 controls were studied. Palsies under 1 month in duration were designated as acute and those of longer duration were chronic. Among peripheral palsies, five were acute, nine were chronic. Among ce

Yawning despite trismus in a patient with locked-in syndrome caused by a thrombosed megadolichobasilar artery.

We report a 62-year-old woman with a locked-in syndrome with bilateral masticatory spasms and persistent trismus, who was still able to yawn. A vascular malformation of the basilar artery-megadolichobasilar artery (fusiform aneurysm, vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia) was determined to be the underlying cause of this rare combination of symptoms. A thrombus in the megadolichobasilaris as well as an almost total pontine infarction were demonstrated on CT- and MRI-scans. Thus, trismus may be associated with locked-in syndrome due to megadolichobasilar artery thrombus, although yawning is still poss

Effects of perinatal undernourishment on neuronal development of the facial motor nucleus in the rat.

The facial nucleus (FN) of the rat is composed of multipolar neurons generated between gestational days G12 and G15. This nucleus is involved in the mechanisms underlying muscle contraction during the sucking reflex. After birth, the neuronal substrate of this reflex is gradually organized to allow the performance of other functions such as gnawing, chewing, swallowing and drinking. Undernourishment is known to produce different degrees of delayed brain development, the greatest of which are similar to the characteristics of the premature syndrome. Neuronal morphological alterations are associ

Rat somatosensory cerebropontocerebellar pathways: spatial relationships of the somatotopic map of the primary somatosensory cortex are preserved in a three-dimensional clustered pontine map.

In the primary somatosensory cortex (SI), the body surface is mapped in a relatively continuous fashion, with adjacent body regions represented in adjacent cortical domains. In contrast, somatosensory maps found in regions of the cerebellar hemispheres, which are influenced by the SI through a monosynaptic link in the pontine nuclei, are discontinuous ("fractured") in organization. To elucidate this map transformation, the authors studied the organization of the first link in the SI-cerebellar pathway, the SI-pontine projection. After injecting anterograde axonal tracers into electrophysiologi

Amygdaloid modulation of mesopontine peribrachial neuronal activity: implications for arousal.

This research sought to determine if activation of the amygdaloid central nucleus (ACe) modulates the activity of arousal-related neurons within the peribrachial (PB) region. Two categories of neurons were identified. Neurons of the 1st category demonstrated low spontaneous rates and responded with a burst of spikes to acoustic stimuli, characteristics similar to those reported for cholinergic ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave generator neurons. Neurons of the 2nd category demonstrated significant correlations between their spontaneous activity and the power of delta wave activity in the ele

Comparative distribution of estrogen receptor-alpha and -beta mRNA in the rat central nervous system.

Estrogen plays a profound role in regulating the structure and function of many neuronal systems in the adult rat brain. The actions of estr … cific expression of ER-alpha, ER-beta, or both may be important in determining the physiological responses of neuronal populations to estrogen action.

Magnetic resonance image-directed stereotactic neurosurgery: use of image fusion with computerized tomography to enhance spatial accuracy.

Distortions of the magnetic field, such as those caused by susceptibility artifacts and peripheral magnetic field warping, can limit geometric precision in the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in stereotactic procedures. The authors have routinely found systematic error in MR stereotactic coordinates with a median of 4 mm compared to computerized tomography (CT) coordinates. This error may place critical neural structures in jeopardy in sme procedures. A description is given of an image fusion technique that uses a chamfer matching algorithm; the advantages of MR imaging in anatomical de

Reversal of dexfenfluramine-induced anorexia and c-Fos/c-Jun expression by lesion in the lateral parabrachial nucleus.

The external subdivision of the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBE) shows strong Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) following anorectic doses of the indirect serotonin agonist dexfenfluramine (DFEN). In an effort to determine the contribution of the LPBE to DFEN-induced anorexia, bilateral ibotenate lesions were made in the LPBE, and the effects of the lesion on DFEN-induced anorexia and FLI as well as c-Jun-like immunoreactivity (JLI) were examined. It was found that LPBE lesion significantly attenuated DFEN anorexia: in a 1-h food intake test following 24-h food deprivation, DFEN (2 mg/kg) supp

Extrapyramidal syndrome responsive to dopaminergic treatment following recovery from central pontine myelinolysis.

A 52-year-old woman developed severe hyponatremia following treatment for hypertension with chlorthalidone. Rapid correction of hyponatremia resulted in coma, quadriplegia and hypopnea compatible with central pontine myelinolysis. She recovered with residual facial hypomimia, bradykinesia, cogwheel rigidity and coarse resting tremor, responding to dopaminergic treatment. Her symptoms and signs, which are quite similar to idiopathic Parkinson's disease, are still responsive to treatment 7 years after onset.

Distribution of catecholamine uptake sites in human brain as determined by quantitative [3H] mazindol autoradiography.

Because of the importance of the catecholamine system in Parkinson's disease and its relevance to a variety of clinical movement disorders, catecholamine uptake sites were mapped in the human brain using [3H] mazindol autoradiography. Displacement studies with known dopamine (DA) and noradrenaline (NA) uptake blockers showed that binding in the striatum was to dopamine uptake sites; binding in the locus coeruleus was to noradrenergic uptake sites. By using the selective noradrenergic uptake blocker desmethylimipramine (DMI), a comprehensive map of both DA and NA uptake sites was generated. In

Cuban Sugarcane Wax Alcohol Supplementation Prevents Brain and Eye Damages of Zebrafish Exposed to High-Cholesterol and High-Galactose Diet for 30 Weeks: Protection of Myelin, Cornea, and Retina.

Cuban sugarcane wax alcohol (policosanol) is a blend of eight characteristic aliphatic alcohols extracted from the Cuban sugarcane and widely recognized for its multifunctional applications and therapeutic properties. In the present study, the potency of policosanol (POL) was assessed for its ability to prevent metabolic stress and associated disorders posed by a high-cholesterol (HC) and high-galactose (HG) diet in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Adult zebrafish (n = 56/group) were fed either with an HC+HG diet (containing 4%, w/w cholesterol and 30%, w/w galactose), or an HC+HG amalgamated diet wit

The role of preoperative MRI in endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal hypophysectomy of pituitary adenoma.

BACKGROUND: The trans-sphenoidal approach, commonly used for removing pituitary adenomas, has become a widely accepted and successful method … rmed by employing quantitative estimates of MRI signal intensity obtained from both the adenoma and pons. During the surgical procedure, a series of sequential-graded procedures were used for the removal of tumours with varying consistencies. Softer tumours were addressed using the Suction technique (R1), while tumours of intermediate consistency were …

The challenge of controlling an auditory BCI in the case of severe motor disability.

BACKGROUND: The locked-in syndrome (LIS), due to a lesion in the pons, impedes communication. This situation can also be met after some severe brain injury or in advanced Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In the most severe condition, the persons cannot communicate at all because of a complete oculomotor paralysis (Complete LIS or CLIS). This even prevents the detection of consciousness. Some studies suggest that auditory brain-computer interface (BCI) could restore a communication through a « yes-no» code. METHODS: We developed an auditory EEG-based interface which makes use of voluntary …

Therapeutic receptor targets for lower urinary tract dysfunction.

The functions of the lower urinary tract, to store and periodically release urine, are dependent on the activity of smooth and striated muscles in the bladder, urethra, and external urethral sphincter. During urine storage, the outlet is closed, and the bladder smooth muscle is quiescent. When bladder volume reaches the micturition threshold, activation of a micturition center in the dorsolateral pons (the pontine micturition center) induces a bladder contraction and a reciprocal relaxation of the urethra, leading to bladder emptying. During voiding, sacral parasympathetic (pelvic) nerves prov…
