Sex of sexual partners and disordered weight control behaviors in a nationally representative sample of South Korean adolescents.

Eating disorders are a serious and life-threatening health issue associated with physical and mental health problems. Stigma associated with sexual orientation is thought to be one contributor to eating disorders symptoms in U.S. adolescents. Additional research on disordered weight control behaviors in diverse populations is needed to better understand their etiology. To examine the association of sex of sexual partners with disordered weight control behaviors among South Korean adolescents, we analyzed survey data from 67,266 adolescents, ages 12-18 years, from the 2015 Korea Youth Risk Beha

A computer-assisted motivational social network intervention to reduce alcohol, drug and HIV risk behaviors among Housing First residents.

BACKGROUND: Individuals transitioning from homelessness to housing face challenges to reducing alcohol, drug and HIV risk behaviors. To aid in this transition, this study developed and will test a computer-assisted intervention that delivers personalized social network feedback by an intervention facilitator trained in motivational interviewing (MI). The intervention goal is to enhance motivation to reduce high risk alcohol and other drug (AOD) use and reduce HIV risk behaviors. METHODS/DESIGN: In this Stage 1b pilot trial, 60 individuals that are transitioning from homelessness to housing wi

Activation of serotonin 5-HT(2C) receptor suppresses behavioral sensitization and naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms in heroin-treated mice.

Abuse and dependence to heroin has evolved into a global epidemic as a significant clinical and societal problem with devastating consequences. Repeated exposure to heroin can induce long-lasting behavioral sensitization and withdrawal. Pharmacological activation of 5-HT2C receptors (5-HT2CRs) suppresses psychostimulant-induced drug-seeking and behavioral sensitization. The present study examined the effect of a selective 5-HT2CR agonist lorcaserin on behavioral sensitization and naloxone-precipitated withdrawal symptoms in heroin-treated mice. Male mice received heroin (1.0 mg/kg, s.c.) twice

Sleep Disturbance in Chinese College Students with Mental Health Problems: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Sleep disturbance has an enormous impact on college students. Poor sleep is associated with low academic achievement, psychological distress and high health risk behaviors. College students with various mental health problems (e.g., anxiety and depression) are particularly at risk for sleep problems. The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of a wide range of internalizing/externalizing psychological problems on sleep disturbance. A total of 2134 Chinese college students (60.2% men) with mental health problems were selected as participants after completing the self-reported Chine

Problematic Gaming and Internet Use but Not Gambling May Be Overrepresented in Sexual Minorities - A Pilot Population Web Survey Study.

Background: Substance-related addictive disorders are known to be overrepresented in non-heterosexual individuals, but it is largely unknown whether this is also the case for behavioral addictions such as problem gaming and gambling. This study aimed, in a pilot web survey design, to assess whether problematic gambling, gaming and internet use may be more common in individuals with a non-heterosexual orientation. Methods: An online survey was distributed through media and social media, and answered by 605 individuals (51% women and 11% non-heterosexual). Problem gambling, problem gaming and pr

Identifying indicators of harmful and problem gambling in a Canadian sample through receiver operating characteristic analysis.

Many gamblers would prefer to reduce gambling on their own rather than to adopt an abstinence approach within the context of a gambling treatment program. Yet responsible gambling guidelines lack quantifiable markers to guide gamblers in wagering safely. To address these issues, the current investigation implemented receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis to identify behavioral indicators of harmful and problem gambling. Gambling involvement was assessed in 503 participants (275 psychiatric outpatients and 228 community gamblers) with the Canadian Problem Gambling Index. Overall gambl

The impact of general medical condition on sleep in children with mental retardation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare sleep problem categories of children with mental retardation without general medical condition (MR-GMC), children with MR co-occurring with GMC (MR+GMC), siblings of the MR children, and the general population. METHOD: This is the first study which separates MR children with GMC and those without GMC. The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire was completed by their parents to assess their children's sleep practices and behaviors such as the child's sleeping habits, sleeping arrangements, sleep anxiety, night wakening, parasomnias, and daytime slee

Do protective behavioral strategies mediate the relationship between drinking motives and alcohol use in college students?

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use among college students represents a public health problem on American college campuses. Use of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) has been shown to be related to reduced alcohol use and fewer alcohol-related problems, but the relationship of PBS to other alcohol-related constructs is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the use of PBS mediated the relationship between positively and negatively reinforcing drinking motives and both alcohol use and alcohol-related problems. METHOD: Data were collected on 254 undergraduate students at a lar

The influence of levetiracetam on psychosocial and behavioral functioning in children: A case-control and follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Levetiracetam, a widely used antiepileptic drug in children, has been associated with psychosocial and behavioral problems, which are also influenced by epilepsy variables, including duration or seizure frequency. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to investigate the frequency and timing of treatment-emergent psychosocial and behavioral problems in children receiving levetiracetam, irrespective of seizure variables which are possible confounders. METHODS: A prospective, case-control study with a 3-month follow-up was conducted. Consecutive children aged 6 to 16years with new

Social cognition in Parkinson's disease: a comprehensive systematic review and integrative conceptual framework.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized not only by motor symptoms but also by non-motor impairments, including deficits in social cognition (SC), defined as the ability to recognize, interpret, and respond to others' emotions, intentions, and behaviors. This systematic review synthesizes evidence on SC in PD, focusing on three core aspects: emotion recognition, empathy/Theory of Mind (ToM), and social problem-solving. METHODS: We included 191 behavioral and neuroimaging studies based on a PRISMA-guided search of four databases. RESULTS: The literature review findings reveale

Mixed-Methods Study of Use and Attitudes About Psychedelics for Therapeutic Purposes Among Low-Income U.S. Veterans Nationally.

There is great public and clinical interest in the use of psychedelics for therapeutic purposes. However, there has been little national study of psychedelic use in the U.S. veteran population. This study used quantitative and qualitative data from a nationally representative survey of 1,031 low-income U.S. veterans who participated in the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) Study in 2023. In the total sample, lifetime prevalence of psychedelic use for therapeutic purposes was 5.6%, and 23.2% believed psychedelics should be legalized for therapeutics. Veterans who

Measuring Children's Reward and Punishment Sensitivity: An Initial Psychometric Evaluation of the Contingency Response Rating Scale.

Existing research shows that children's responses to rewards and punishments are essential for understanding attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, and callous-unemotional traits. The present study developed the Contingency Response Rating Scale (CRRS) to fulfill the need for a reliable and valid measure of children's contingency response style that is brief, easy to use in applied settings, and provides additional information to existing clinical measures. We examined the psychometric properties of the CRRS in a sample of 196 children (ages

The Emotion Regulation Mechanism in Neurotic Individuals: The Potential Role of Mindfulness and Cognitive Bias.

Neuroticism is a personality trait that impacts daily life and raises the risk of mental problems and physical illnesses. To understand the emotion regulation mechanism of neurotic individuals, we developed two complementary studies to examine the effects of mindfulness and negative cognitive bias. In Study 1, four scales (EPQ-RSC, FFMQ, CERQ, NCPBQ) were used for assessment. Correlation analysis and structural comparison showed that: (1) the level of neuroticism was positively correlated with negative emotion regulation; (2) negative cognitive bias mediated the relationship between neuroticis

Factor structure and clinical correlates of the 61-item Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS).

The objective of this study was to assess the factor structure and clinical correlates of a 61-item version of the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS), a self-report retrospective measure of childhood problems, experiences, and behavior used in ADHD assessment. Given the currently mostly widely used form of the WURS was derived via a criterion-keyed approach, the study aimed to use latent variable modeling of the 61-item WURS to potentially identify more and more homogeneous set of items reflecting current conceptualizations of ADHD symptoms. Exploratory structural equation modeling was used to ge

Questionnaire-based assessment of executive functioning: Case studies.

Delays in the development of executive functioning skills are frequently observed in pediatric neuropsychology populations and can have a broad and significant impact on quality of life. As a result, assessment of executive functioning is often relevant for the development of formulations and recommendations in pediatric neuropsychology clinical work. Questionnaire-based measures of executive functioning behaviors in everyday life have unique advantages and complement traditional neuropsychological measures of executive functioning. Two case studies of children with spina bifida are presented

Integrating maternal psychosocial well-being into a child-development intervention: the five-pillars approach.

Maternal psychosocial well-being (MPW) is a wide-ranging concept that encompasses the psychological (e.g., mental health, distress, anxiety, depression, coping, problem solving) and social (e.g., family and community support, empowerment, culture) aspects of motherhood. Evidence-based MPW interventions that can be integrated into large-scale maternal and child health programs have not been developed. Building on several years of research in Pakistan, we developed and integrated a cognitive behavioral therapy-based MPW intervention (the five-pillars approach) into a child nutrition and developm

Evaluation of "the incredible years" in Sweden: the transferability of an American parent-training program to Sweden.

Structured parent training has been proven to be effective in reducing disruptive behavior problems (DBP) in children. Most of the programs that are used in Sweden have their origin in North America, and there is an ongoing debate over the transferability to Sweden of manual-based programs developed in other contexts. The goal of the present study was to study effectiveness of the Incredible Years parent-training program (IY), developed in the US, in regular clinical work in Sweden, using a randomized controlled design. Parents of 62 four to eight-year-old children diagnosed with Oppositional

[Caring for patients with Alzheimer's disease].

The term "caring" refers to the process aimed at enabling people with disabilities to achieve and maintain optimal functioning. According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) proposed by the World Health Organization in 2001, the functioning involves all aspects of daily life and applies to 3 levels: body functions and structures, activities, and participation. Caring is of 2 types; (1) therapeutic care, which restores and maintains the body functions; and (2) compensatory care, which compensates for the impairment of body functions and thus enhances

Disparity between heroin addicts enrolled in maintenance treatment and detoxification treatment and its implication.

Fundamentally, detoxification treatment aims to stop substance use behavior among the opioid addicts, while maintenance treatment aims to promote a healthier addiction behavior among the subjects by providing safer chemical substitutes. In this study, we evaluated the differences of social-demographics and clinical features between heroin addicts enrolled in detoxification and maintenance treatment. Data of 748 heroin addicts admitted for maintenance treatment or detoxification treatment between January 2004 and October 2007 were retrieved. Statistical analyses showed that older mean age, scho
