Ventricular Diastolic Function in Normal Fetuses and Fetuses with Hb Bart's Disease Assessed by Color M-Mode Propagation Velocity using Cardio-STIC-M (Spatio-Temporal Image Correlation M-Mode).

Purpose: To determine whether ventricular diastolic dysfunction contributes to the pathogenesis of fetal cardiac failure due to fetal anemia using fetal Hb Bart's disease as a live model and cardio-STIC-M as a diagnostic tool. Materials and Methods: Color cardio-STIC volume datasets were acquired from fetuses at risk for Hb Bart's disease during 18 - 22 weeks of gestation and normal pregnancies and pregnancies with hydrops fetalis caused by Hb Bart's disease at 28 - 32 weeks. The volumes were analyzed off-line for velocity propagation (Vp) of the right and left ventricles to assess ventricular

[New imaging procedures in rheumatology: from bench to bedside].

Modern imaging procedures play an import role in diagnostic and therapy-control in rheumatic diseases. Reasons are the continuous development, the evaluation and the implementation in local / international guidelines and classification criteria. According to new therapeutic goals and the aim of clinical and radiological remission the early diagnosis and sufficient therapy-control is unalterable. The ultrasound is today an inherent tool in the early diagnosis of joint- and vascular diseases and is used comprehensively in rheumatic diseases. Beside the highly sensitive detection of inflammation

Early follow-up and treatment recommendations for isolated calf deep venous thrombosis.

BACKGROUND: The clinical significance of isolated calf vein thrombosis (ICVT) remains controversial. Several studies have shown that the majority of ICVT do not propagate above the knee while other studies have suggested ICVT propagation and recommend full anticoagulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the progression of ICVT, identify risk factors for clot propagation, and to evaluate further thrombotic events associated with it. METHODS: This study consisted of 156 patients and a total of 180 limbs. All patients included had ICVT involving either the tibial, peroneal, gastrocne

Cerebral vascular resistance and left ventricular myocardial performance in fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly.

We sought to determine whether cerebral vascular resistance and left ventricular myocardial performance (LVTei) are abnormal in fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly. The pulsatility index of the middle cerebral artery (MCAPI) and umbilical artery (UAPI), LVTei, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), and fetal cardiovascular profile score in 11 fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly were evaluated by fetal echocardiography. MCAPI/UAPI values were calculated for the Ebstein's anomaly group. The control group included 44 healthy fetuses of uncomplicated pregnancies matched for gestational age (according to

The value of screening for multiple arterio-venous malformations in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: a diagnostic study.

Occult visceral arterio-venous malformations (AVMs) may be a constant threat to patients suffering from hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome (M. ROW). HHT patients predominantly become symptomatic through chronic, recurrent epistaxis, a symptom that can alert physicians at an early stage of the disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether occult, visceral arterio-venous malformations could be detected by screening imaging studies in patients suffering from HHT. In a comprehensive diagnostic study, Rendu-Osler-Weber patients were

Bioengineered vascular access maintains structural integrity in response to arteriovenous flow and repeated needle puncture.

OBJECTIVE: Tissue-engineered blood vessels (TEBV) have been proposed as an alternative to prosthetic grafts for dialysis access. However, arteriovenous (AV) grafts must withstand extreme flow rates and frequent needle trauma. In a proof-of-concept study, we sought to determine whether scaffold-based TEBV could withstand the hemodynamic and mechanical challenges of chronic dialysis access. METHODS: TEBV were constructed using decellularized arterial scaffolds seeded with autologous ovine endothelial cells (EC) derived from circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) using a novel high-affin

Significance of Blunted Venous Waveforms Seen on Upper Extremity Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend vascular mapping ultrasound (US) prior to arteriovenous fistula creation. Blunted venous waveforms (BVWs) suggest central venous stenosis; however, this relationship and one between BVWs and the presence of a central venous catheter (CVC) remain unclear. METHODS: All patients who received upper extremity vascular mapping US between January 2013 and October 2014 at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics, comorbidities, US results, pacemaker history, and CVC status were collected. Waveforms were assessed at the proximal

Ocular blood flow in glaucoma - the Leuven Eye Study.

PURPOSE: Elevated intra-ocular pressure (IOP) has been identified as a major risk factor for glaucoma. Additionally, extensive literature depicts a vascular dysfunction to exist in these patients. However, a large ocular blood flow-oriented trial to integrate these findings in the clinical setting is lacking. This study would likely help to identify which of these vascular data can be used as a clinical tool for screening and disease stratification. METHOD: Prospective, cross-sectional, case-control hospital-based study. Patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), normal-tension glaucom

Transradial approach for challenging vascular access interventions.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous interventional procedures for vascular access are usually performed using the draining cephalic or basilic vein. The transradial approach, which has been extensively investigated for coronary angiography and intervention, could be an attractive new technique for peri-anastomotic arteriovenous fistula stenosis. METHOD: From June 2012 to February 2013, 30 patients with end-stage renal failure were evaluated for transradial vascular access intervention. A 4-French (Fr) micropuncture kit was used to access the radial artery and then subsequently upgraded to a 5-Fr sheath.
