BACKGROUND: Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS), a triad of ophthalmoplegia, areflexia and ataxia, is one of the regional variants of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) that might account for a quarter of all cases of GBS, especially in Asian countries. There is history of an antecedent upper respiratory tract infection in up to two thirds of MFS cases. However, association of MFS in adults and pneumonia is rarely reported and in those cases causative pathogen was Mycoplasma pneumonia e. To our knowledge, association of MFS and ventilator-associated pneumonia has never been reported. So, we hereby report

PURPOSE: Abnormal neurogenesis in the hippocampus after status epilepticus (SE) has been suggested as a key pathogeny of temporal lobe epilepsy. This study aimed to investigate the effect of deep brain stimulation of the anterior thalamic nucleus (ANT-DBS) on hippocampal neurogenesis in LiCl-pilocarpine-induced epileptic rats and to analyze its relationship with postoperative spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) and anxiety.
METHOD: SE was induced by a systemic LiCl-pilocarpine injection in adult male rats. Rats in the DBS group underwent ANT-DBS immediately after successful SE induction. SRS

In the 20th century, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was conceptualized as a neurological disorder affecting some active and retired boxers who had tremendous exposure to neurotrauma. In recent years, the two research groups in the USA who have led the field have asserted definitively that CTE is a delayed-onset and progressive neurodegenerative disease, with symptoms appearing in midlife or decades after exposure. Between 2005 and 2012 autopsy cases of former boxers and American football players described neuropathology attributed to CTE that was broad and diverse. This pathology, resu

Neurofeedback is a kind of biofeedback, which teaches self-control of brain functions to subjects by measuring brain waves and providing a feedback signal. Neurofeedback usually provides the audio and or video feedback. Positive or negative feedback is produced for desirable or undesirable brain activities, respectively. In this review, we provided clinical and technical information about the following issues: (1) Various neurofeedback treatment protocols i.e. alpha, beta, alpha/theta, delta, gamma, and theta; (2) Different EEG electrode placements i.e. standard recording channels in the front

AimsPhosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) relay growth factor signaling and mediate cytoprotection and cell growth. The cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc(-) imports cystine while exporting glutamate, thereby promoting glutathione synthesis while increasing extracellular cerebral glutamate. The aim of this study was to analyze the pathway through which growth factor and PI3K signaling induce the cystine/glutamate antiporter system xc(-) and to demonstrate its biological significance for neuroprotection, cell growth, and epilepsy.ResultsPI3Ks induce system xc(-) through glycogen synthase kinas

PURPOSE: Up to 30% of patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) have seizures that are refractory to medication despite appropriate therapy that commonly includes valproate (VPA). The aim of this study was to compare patients with VPA-refractory and VPA-responsive IGE in order to determine whether there are group differences in generalized spike and wave discharge (GSWD) generators that may be associated with VPA resistance.
METHODS: Of 89 IGE patients who underwent electroencephalography (EEG) combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI; EEG/fMRI), 25 with GSWDs ident

Pleomorphic xantho-astrocytoma (PXA) is a relatively rare brain tumor of adolescents and young adults characterized by its superficial location with frequent involvement of the meninges, and its slow growth despite features of histological atypia. The authors present a retrospective immunohistochemical analysis of 8 surgically treated cases in order to determine the expression of glial and neuronal markers, and to assess the proliferating cell fraction. The study population comprised 1 female and 7 male patients with a mean age of 26.7 years, most tumors being located in one of the temporal lo

We studied the clinical and electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics of 45 patients with mid-line spikes. The incidence of mid-line spikes was 3.0% in total EEG population in childhood. Sex incidence was equal. First appearance age of mid-line spikes ranged from one month to 12 years, with a mean of 5.0 years old. Fz focus was in 3 patients, Cz in 31 and Pz in 11. Thirty two of the 45 patients (71%) had a history of clinical seizures; 16 with febrile convulsions and 16 with epileptic seizures. Of the remaining 13 patients without a history of seizures, the EEG was obtained because of post

The clinical hallmark of episodic ataxia type 2 (EA2) consists of episodes of recurrent severe vestibulo-cerebellar dysfunction, characterized by marked postural unsteadiness and oscillopsia. Triggering factors of EA2 attacks, such as physical exertion and sensory stimulation, the high comorbidity with migraine, and the increased risk of epilepsy in EA2 suggest abnormal brain excitability. To investigate this, we assessed brain excitability in response to visual (checkerboard) and visual motion (optic flow) stimuli using interictal functional magnetic resonance imaging. Visual stimulation elic

BACKGROUND: The exact architecture of the human auditory cortex remains a subject of debate, with discrepancies between functional and microstructural studies. In a hierarchical framework for sensory perception, simple sound perception is expected to take place in the primary auditory cortex, while the processing of complex, or more integrated perceptions is proposed to rely on associative and higher-order cortices.
OBJECTIVES: We hypothesize that auditory symptoms induced by direct electrical stimulation (DES) offer a window into the architecture of the brain networks involved in auditory ha

BACKGROUND: Conflicts in regarding the lateralization of the seizure onset for mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) are frequently encountered during presurgical evaluation. As a more elaborate, quantified protocol, indices of diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) might be sensitive to evaluate the seizure involvement. However, the accuracy was less revealed. Herein, we determined the lateralizing value of the DSI indices among MTLE patients.
METHODS: Eleven MTLE patients were enrolled together with 11 matched health contrasts. All the participants underwent a DSI scan and with reconstruction of t

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of glioma-related seizures (GRS) is poorly understood. Here in, we aim to identify putative molecular pathways that lead to the development of GRS.
METHODS: We determined brain transcriptome from intraoperative human brain tissue of patients with either GRS, glioma without seizures (non-GRS), or with idiopathic temporal lobe epilepsy (iTLE). We performed transcriptome-wide comparisons between disease groups tissue from non-epileptic controls (non-EC) to identify differentially-expressed genes (DEG). We compared DEGs to identify those that are specific or common to

Cerebral folate transport deficiency results from impaired folate transport across the blood:choroid plexus:cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier. This leads to low CSF 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5MTHF), the active folate metabolite. We are reporting two children with this treatable cerebral folate transport deficiency. Case 1: Seventeen-year-old boy presented with delayed milestones followed by regression, seizures, and intention tremors. On examination child had pyramidal and cerebellar signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain revealed diffuse cerebral and cerebellar atrophy. Targeted nex

Organotypic, or slice cultures, have been widely employed to model aspects of the central nervous system functioning in vitro. Despite the potential of slice cultures in neuroscience, studies using adult nervous tissue to prepare such cultures are still scarce, particularly those from human subjects. The use of adult human tissue to prepare slice cultures is particularly attractive to enhance the understanding of human neuropathologies, as they hold unique properties typical of the mature human brain lacking in slices produced from rodent (usually neonatal) nervous tissue. This protocol descri

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal exposure to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and in particular valproate (VPA) has been shown to impair intellectual and language development in children, but the impact on memory functioning has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate memory skills in school-age children who were exposed to AEDs prenatally.
METHOD: The sample comprised of 105 children aged 6 to 8 years. Information on AED exposure, maternal epilepsy, pregnancy, and medical history was prospectively obtained. Children completed a neuropsychological assessment including measures of verbal a

Gelastic seizures (GS) are typically associated with hypothalamic hamartomas and present during childhood. However it is now known that GS can be found in focal epilepsies arising from other regions in the brain, including mesial and neocortical frontal, temporal and parietal regions. GS have rarely been described as the presenting manifestation of New Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE). In this article we describe a previously healthy 3-year-old who presented with an explosive onset of GS that were refractory to multiple anti-seizure medications. These seizures arose from the right f

Sudden unexplained death in infants, including the sudden infant death syndrome, is likely due to heterogeneous causes that involve different intrinsic vulnerabilities and/or environmental factors. Neuropathologic research focuses upon the role of brain regions, particularly the brainstem, that regulate or modulate autonomic and respiratory control during sleep or transitions to waking. The hippocampus is a key component of the forebrain-limbic network that modulates autonomic/respiratory control via brainstem connections, but its role in sudden infant death has received little attention. We t

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The 5-ht(1E) receptor is highly expressed in the human brain and its structure is conserved in humans, suggesting an important physiological role for 5-ht(1E) receptors. However, neither the function nor the distribution of this receptor has been characterized in the mammalian brain.
EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Rats and mice lack the 5-ht(1E) receptor gene; thus, we used guinea pig brain tissue and immunofluorescent staining techniques to provide the first specific localization of 5-ht(1E) receptors in the mammalian brain.
KEY RESULTS: High levels of 5-ht(1E) receptors are

INTRODUCTION: Post-ictal psychosis syndrome (PIP) belongs to the group of epileptic psychoses which, according to the most commonly used classification, is to be distinguished from ictal psychoses, on one hand, and from inter-ictal psychoses, on the other.
OBJECTIVES: The present paper aims to review recent data concerning the clinical, therapeutic and pathophysiological aspects of PIP.
METHODS: We report four cases of PPI, which involved four patients hospitalized at the Salpêtrière hospital between 2001 and 2005, and discuss these cases in light of the relevant literature.
RESULTS: The PI
