Visuo-spatial attention processes in panic disorder with agoraphobia: a pilot study using a visual target discrimination task.

Panic attacks can be observed in a wide range of situations, but most common are those providing complex and unstructured stimulations, suggesting an impairment in attentional processing of visuo-spatial information. This study evaluated agoraphobics' attentional processing of neutral (i.e., not anxiety-provoking) visuo-spatial stimulation. Twelve patients suffering from panic attacks with agoraphobia were compared with 22 normal controls on a computerized visual target discrimination task specifically designed for this study. Psychometric measures assessed the phobic avoidance, the level of d

Duration, compression, and the aided loudness discomfort level.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this investigation is to determine how the unaided and aided loudness discomfort level (LDL) varies with the duration of the input signal and whether the electroacoustic characteristics of compression circuits affect this relationship in a manner that may alter the listener's dynamic range for short duration sounds. DESIGN: Ten hearing-impaired and 20 normal-hearing listeners participated. LDLs were determined for noise bursts of durations ranging in six steps from 32 to 1024 msec, using a two-alternative, forced-choice adaptive tracking procedure in which input leve

Auditory sustained attention in schizophrenia: a comparison of the Continuous Performance Test and the Pigache Attention Task.

An auditory version of the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) was compared with the Pigache Attention Task (PAT) to evaluate relative sensitivities in schizophrenia. Digits spoken seamlessly for 5 min required a button-press response to each of 50 targets. Diotic and dichotic event rates were 1/s for the CPT and 0.5/s and 2/s for the PAT. 'Correct' responses were restricted to the interstimulus interval (CPT) or to longer intervals (PAT). This study demonstrated that the CPT method of scoring is invalid since significant numbers of late responses counted as both omission and commission errors.

The analysis of repeated-measures data on schizophrenic reaction times using mixture models.

Reaction times for schizophrenic individuals in a simple visual tracking experiment can be substantially more variable than for non-schizophrenic individuals. Current psychological theory suggests that at least some of this extra variability arises from an attentional lapse that delays some, but not all, of each schizophrenic's reaction times. Based on this theory, we pursue models in which measurements from non-schizophrenics arise from a normal linear model with a separate mean for each individual, whereas measurements from schizophrenics arise from a mixture of (i) a component analogous to

Performance-based measurements among elderly drivers and nondrivers.

Although driving is an important ability for maintaining independence in the later years, clinical factors that determine driving status are unknown. Aged male veterans (mean age, 70 years) were recruited from an outpatient clinic (N = 143), including 77 frequent drivers, 41 infrequent drivers, and 25 who drove rarely or not at all. There were 116 (84%) who completed a comprehensive performance-based assessment. There were no significant differences between the three groups in age, formal cognitive testing, or prevalence of stroke history. However, there were significant differences in grip st

Near vision stress: vergence adaptation and accommodative fatigue.

Changes in the visual system following prolonged near work were investigated. Fifteen young, normal subjects undertook a severe, two hour long, binocular near visual task at 20 cm without any breaks. Fusional stress was assessed by near 'phoria change. Refractive change was measured with an autorefractometer to investigate whether transient myopia occurred and its subsequent recovery. The near task caused vergence adaptation which was primarily due to the fusional stress of the task (accounting for 67% of its variance). The 'phoria change was to a lesser extent (40%) dependent on the accommoda

[Thresholds of long-latency evoked potentials and of the sensations of motion occurring during human exposure to linear accelerations].

Forty-seven healthy test subjects were exposed several times each to linear acceleration of varying value. Depending on the acceleration value, they reported subjectively three types of sensations at the threshold level: nondiscriminated in terms of direction (P1, a = 8.0 +/- 2.5 cm/sec2), inverted (P2, a = 12.4 +/- 2.5 cm/sec2) and discriminated (P3, a = 16.1 +/- 3.5 cm/sec2). The acceleration value at which P2 was recorded caused most typical responses in different test subjects whereas that at which P3 was recorded induced greatest individual variations. Evoked potentials in response to lin

Reaction times to lateralized visual stimuli in callosal agenesis: stimulus and response factors.

A young acallosal man was intensively tested in a standard simple reaction time (RT) paradigm using briefly-presented lateralized spots for light. In Experiment 1, findings on previous acallosal patients of a large disadvantage for crossed (e.g. right hemifield-left hand) as against uncrossed (e.g. left hemifield-left hand) RTs were replicated. This crossed-uncrossed difference (CUD), as in previous work, turned out to be smaller in a bimanual response task than in the conventional unimanual task. Experiment 2 was a factorial study of unimanual RTs in which (a) stimulus intensity and (b) spati

Solubilized ibuprofen: evaluation of onset, relief, and safety of a novel formulation in the treatment of episodic tension-type headache.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative efficacy of a new solubilized formulation of ibuprofen compared with acetaminophen caplets. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, parallel group study evaluated 154 subjects taking a single dose of solubilized ibuprofen, 400 mg; acetaminophen, 1000 mg; or placebo for the relief of episodic tension-type headache. Time to relief was measured using a stopwatch, and overall efficacy was measured using traditional categorical pain and relief scales. RESULTS: Ibuprofen capsules (liquigel), 400 mg, were significantly faster than both acetaminophen, 1000 mg, and

The Association Between Acculturation and Parental Feeding Practices in Families With Overweight and Obese Hispanic/Latino Children.

This study examines the association between acculturation and parental feeding practices in low-income Latinos. Overweight/obese children (N = 117), aged 5 to 14 years, and their parents were recruited from a rural health clinic. Findings show that more acculturated parents have greater control over their child's eating behavior (P = .04). Parents who perceive their child as having a weight problem also have more control over their child's eating behavior (P = .02). Control measured from regulation of how much and when the child should eat to offering sweets and screen time for good behavior.

The Relationship between Workplace Incivility and Helping Behavior: Roles of Job Dissatisfaction and Political Skill.

This article investigates the mediating role of job dissatisfaction in the relationship between employees' perceptions of workplace incivility and their helping behavior, as well as the buffering role of political skill in this process. Three-wave, time-lagged data collected from employees and their supervisors revealed that employees' exposure to workplace incivility diminished their helping behavior through their sense of job dissatisfaction. This mediating role of job dissatisfaction was less salient, however, to the extent that employees were equipped with political skill. For organization

Mothers' Experiences of a Women's Health and Empowerment Program for Mothers of a Child with a Disability.

Substantial research identifies mothers of children with a disability as a vulnerable group with compromised health outcomes and restrictions for their own self-care, social, economic and leisure participation. This study investigated perceptions and experiences of mothers following attendance at health education and empowerment workshops (Healthy Mothers Healthy Families). Mixed methods evaluated mothers' experiences. A pragmatic qualitative approach was applied to data analysis of interviews with mothers (N = 19). Four themes emerged: Changes for me; Changes for my family; Wisdom gained; and

Addressing Stigma in Medication Treatment of Adolescents With Opioid Use Disorder.

: In September 2016, the American Academic of Pediatrics released a policy statement that adolescents with opioid use disorder should be offered pharmacotherapy with buprenorphine/naloxone, methadone, or naltrexone. In our clinical practice, however, we have encountered the perception among patients, families, and clinicians alike that medications should be used as a last resort. That we should wait until things get worse is a discarded approach. As addiction specialists, it is imperative that we prevent and identify risky use and use disorders, then intervene early and offer timely, evidence-

The effect of interaural differences in envelope shape on the perceived location of sounds (L).

Users of bilateral cochlear implants and a cochlear implant combined with a contralateral hearing aid are sensitive to interaural time differences (ITDs). The way cochlear implant speech processors work and differences between modalities may result in interaural differences in shape of the temporal envelope presented to the binaural system. The effect of interaural differences in envelope shape on ITD sensitivity was investigated with normal-hearing listeners using a 4 kHz pure tone modulated with a periodic envelope with a trapezoid shape in each cycle. In one ear the onset segment of the tra

Automatic activation of adolescents' peer-relational schemas: evidence from priming with facial identity.

This study provides experimental evidence for automatic, relationship-specific social information processing in 13-year-old adolescents. Photographs of participants' liked, disliked, and unknown peers were used as primes in an affective priming task with happy and angry facial expression probes and in a hypothetical vignette task. For the affective priming, reaction times were faster for congruent than for incongruent prime-probe pairs when the prime visibility was high and the prime-probe stimulus onset asynchrony was long. In the vignette task, participants attributed more hostility toward t

Assessment of sleep hygiene using the Sleep Hygiene Index.

The Sleep Hygiene Index was developed to assess the practice of sleep hygiene behaviors. The Sleep Hygiene Index was delivered to 632 subjects and a subset of the subjects participated in a readministration of the instrument. Test-retest reliability analyses suggested that sleep hygiene behaviors are relatively stable over time for a nonclinical population. Results confirmed that sleep hygiene is strongly related to sleep quality and modestly related to perceptions of daytime sleepiness. As predicted, support of the sleep hygiene construct was also provided by strong correlations with the asso
