Sarcopenia is a predictor for Alzheimer's continuum and related clinical outcomes.

Low body mass index is closely related to a high risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related biomarkers including amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition. However, the association between sarcopenia and Aβ-confirmed AD remains controversial. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and the AD continuum. We explored sarcopenia's association with clinical implications of participants on the AD continuum. We prospectively enrolled 142 participants on the AD continuum (19 with preclinical AD, 96 with mild cognitive impairment due to AD, and 28 with AD dementia) and 58 Aβ-negative cognitiv

Total knee arthroplasty and periprosthetic distal femoral fracture: looking beyond the osteoporosis to previous osteoporotic fracture.

UNLABELLED: Osteoporosis increases the risk of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures after TKA, especially in patients with a history of osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, careful assessment and proper treatment of osteoporosis need and the importance of taking osteoporotic medication needs to be recognized by the patients following primary TKA. PURPOSE: Osteoporosis is a risk factor for fractures, including those of the hip, vertebrae, and distal radius; however, the association between osteoporosis and periprosthetic fractures after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has not been much investig

Body Composition Changes Following a Very-Low-Calorie Pre-Operative Diet in Patients Undergoing Bariatric Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Fatty liver in obese patients increases the technical difficulty of bariatric surgery. Pre-operative weight loss with a very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) is commonly used to facilitate surgery. Few studies have quantified the systemic effect of rapid pre-operative weight loss on body composition. The objective of this study is to evaluate body composition changes in bariatric surgery patients undergoing a VLCD. METHODS: Body composition assessments were performed between August 2017 and January 2019 using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry immediately before and after a 2-week VLCD at St

A Long-Term Pilot Study on Sex and Spinal Cord Injury Shows Sexual Dimorphism in Functional Recovery and Cardio-Metabolic Responses.

More than a quarter of a million individuals in the US live with spinal cord injury (SCI). SCI disrupts neural circuitry to vital organs in the body. Despite severe incidences of long-term peripheral complications from SCI, the cardio-metabolic consequences and divergences in sex-related responses are not well described. We examined the effects of SCI on functional recovery, cardiac structure and function, body composition, and glucose metabolism on adult female and male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. SCI was induced at T10 via contusion. Measured outcomes include behavioral assessment, body weight

Factors influencing bone loss in anorexia nervosa: assessment and therapeutic options.

Decreased mineral density is one of the major complications of anorexia nervosa. The phenomenon is even more pronounced when the disease occurs during adolescence and when the duration of amenorrhoea is long. The mechanisms underlying bone loss in anorexia are complex. Oestrogen deficiency has long been considered as the main factor, but cannot explain the phenomenon on its own. The essential role of nutrition-related factors-especially leptin and adiponectin-has been reported in recent studies. Therapeutic strategies to mitigate bone involvement in anorexia are still a matter for debate. Alth

Chronic kidney disease is associated with low BMD at the hip but not at the spine.

UNLABELLED: Although chronic kidney disease is associated with other bone disorders, osteoporosis can be found in this context, and it is defined based on bone mineral density (BMD), measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. As CKD progresses, the percentage of normal BMD decreases, whereas that of osteopenia/osteoporosis increases, mostly due to hip involvement, particularly in patients with reduced renal function. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent disease in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We investigated the features of bone mineral density (BMD) in patients

Impact of Estimated Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Adherence Patterns on Bone Mineral Density in a Large PrEP Demonstration Project.

Bone mineral density (BMD) declines due to tenofovir-containing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) have varied among PrEP demonstration projects, potentially related to variable adherence. Characterization of BMD changes in highly adherent individuals, estimated via tenofovir-diphosphate (TFV-DP) levels in dried blood spots (DBS), can assist clinicians when counseling patients. Cisgender men who have sex with men and transwomen in the optional dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) substudy of a large, international, open-label PrEP demonstration project, the iPrEx-open-label extension (OLE) stud

The Association of Aromatic Amino Acids with Incident Hip Fracture, aBMD, and Body Composition from the Cardiovascular Health Study.

In 5187 persons from the Cardiovascular Health Study, there was no significant association of dietary intakes of aromatic amino acids (AAA) with areal BMD of the hip or body composition. However, those who had the lowest dietary intakes of AAA were at increased risk for incident hip fractures. Prior studies of the association of protein intake with osteoporosis are conflicting and have not directly examined the relationship of aromatic amino acids (AAA) with fractures, areal bone mineral density (aBMD), and body composition. We sought to determine the relationship of dietary intakes of AAA wit

Elevated plasma CXCL12/SDF-1 levels are linked with disease severity of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

This study was designed to determine whether plasma CXCL12 levels in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) patients are related to disease severity. A total of 91 PMOP females were recruited, and 88 postmenopausal non-osteoporotic (PMNOP) women and 90 healthy females were incorporated as controls. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was utilised to explore bone-mineral density (BMD). The Genant semi-quantitative grading scale was used for vertebral fractures, and plasma CXCL12/SDF-1 levels were investigated by ELISA. Plasma TNF-α and C-telopeptide cross-linked collagen type 1 (CTX-1) were also teste
