Evaluation of a Total worker Health® leadership training in Latin America: opportunities for sustainable change in low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Total Worker Health® (TWH) leadership training, targeting organizational leaders who influence workplace safety, health, and well-being, offers a promising avenue for lasting positive change. However, the efficacy of such training in diverse communities, especially low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Latin America, remains underexplored. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of a TWH leadership training program within a major Latin American agribusiness operating in Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Mexico. The evaluation followed best practices, encompassing behav

Palliative care experience among primary caregivers of children with cancer in low and lower-middle-income countries: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric palliative care (PPC) improves the quality of life of children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions, with caregivers playing an important role. Providing PPC in low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) is challenging due to limited resources, inadequate access to specialised care, financial constraints, and cultural or religious beliefs. This study aims to synthesise qualitative research on the experiences of primary care givers caring for children with cancer receiving palliative care in LMICs. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A systematic search will

Do environmental stringent policies enhance the impact of renewable energy on CO2 reduction? Evidence from BRICS-T economies.

The pressing challenge of climate change necessitates a deeper understanding of how policy frameworks enhance the impact of renewable energy in reducing carbon emissions, particularly in rapidly developing economies. This study fills a crucial void by investigating the moderating role of stringent environmental policies on the nexus between renewable energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The analysis covers data from the BRICS-T nations over the period 1990-2020. To assess the hypothesized relationships among the variables, we employed the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOL

Adherence to asthma and COPD inhaled therapies in low- and middle-income countries: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: In low-income and middle-income countries (LIMCs), defined based on the World Bank classification, non-adherence to respiratory therapies contributes to increasing mortality and morbidity due to chronic respiratory diseases. To address this issue, it is essential to identify and tackle underlying factors such as cultural beliefs, socioeconomic disparities, and limited access to healthcare resources and infrastructures. The absence of strategies that integrate community involvement, healthcare professional's training, economic policies, and educational programs exacerbates the dis

Assessment of heatwave impacts on child feeding practices across 36 low-income and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Optimal feeding practices during the first 2 years of life are vital for child survival and growth. Current nutrition programmes in low-income and middle-income countries focus primarily on long-term dietary improvement, overlooking the acute challenges that heatwaves present to daily feeding practices in already nutritionally vulnerable populations. METHODS: By using the Demographic and Health Surveys data, we analysed data from the youngest child aged 6-23 months (including both infants aged 6-11 months and young children aged 12-23 months) in 293 137 households across 36 low-in

Systems framework for post-hospital follow-up care of small and/or sick newborns: A pathway to sustainable and scalable quality care in low-resource, high-burden countries.

South Asian and Sub-Saharan African countries, disproportionately overrepresented in the World Bank's low- and middle-income categories, bear a high burden of small and/or sick newborns. It is important to acknowledge that, in addition to reducing mortality, creating opportunities to enhance their health and well-being, thereby improving quality of life, is an essential metric for evaluating neonatal care success. With increased survival rates for small and/or sick newborns in most high-burden, resource-constrained settings, developing and strengthening specialized, structured neonatal follow-

Penicillin remains an effective agent against Group A Streptococcus in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis of antibiotic resistance and associated genes.

BACKGROUND: Driven by the extensive use of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance has become an issue globally, in both hospital and community settings. Limited access to laboratory diagnostic testing often results in undetected resistance, which may only be detected once empiric treatment fails. There have been numerous reports on the increase of antibiotic resistance in group A Streptococcus (Strep A), particularly macrolide resistance. OBJECTIVES: To document the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in Strep A in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to the most widely used antibiotics. Wher

Burden, causes, and treatment approaches of recurrent pregnancy loss: a scoping review.

Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL), defined as the loss of two or more clinically recognized pregnancies before 20 weeks of gestation, poses a significant global medical challenge. Affecting up to 5% of couples trying to conceive, its multifactorial causes include genetic, anatomical, immunological, hormonal, and environmental factors. However, 65% of cases remain idiopathic, exacerbating the complexity of diagnosis and treatment. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face additional challenges due to limited diagnostic capacities, socioeconomic disparities, and the burden of infectious disease

Addressing Cleft Care in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Beyond Cleft Lip and Palate with Improvement of Otolaryngology, Audiology, and Speech Services.

There are many barriers patients and families face in low- and middleincome countries (LMICs) to just receive the initial surgical care for their cleft lip and palate (CLP). Cleft lip/palate care encompasses much more than just the initial primary repairs, especially in the realm of otolaryngology, audiologic health, and speech language pathology. LMICs face many disparities in training and surgical care for secondary cleft surgeries, and addressing these disparities and creating solutions is paramount for the future of CLP patients globally. This editorial aims to highlight these disparities

Bridging the predictive divide: A hybrid early warning system for scalable and real-time dengue surveillance in LMICs.

The global resurgence of dengue presents an ongoing challenge for public health systems, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where conventional early warning systems (EWS) often suffer from reporting delays and under-detection. While AI-powered EWS offer superior accuracy, their reliance on dense data streams and advanced infrastructure limits their scalability in resource-limited contexts. This paper introduces a hybrid EWS architecture that strategically combines retrospective epidemiological data with selective real-time signals-such as climate variables and digital tre

[NAEGLERIA FOWLERI AMOEBA MENINGITIS - REVIEW AND UPDATE].

Naegleria fowleri is an amphizoic, thermophilic, flagellate amoeba, also known as the brain eating amoeba. It can survive in water, soil, and mostly in the human host's central nervous system. It thrives in fresh water and a hot climate. Naegleria fowleri causes infection in children as well as adults, following aspiration of fresh water into the nostrils. It causes a deadly infection called primary meningoencephalitis [PAM]. PAM is more common in developing countries; a few cases occurred in developed countries such as the USA, and even in Israel.

Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy outcomes across a low-and middle-income country metropolitan health service.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy (LSC) is a safe alternative for difficult cholecystectomies to prevent bile duct injury and open conversion. The primary aim was to detail the use and outcomes on LSCs. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). Relative clinical factors, outcomes, and 30-day follow-up between LSC and LC were compared using univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Six hundred and twenty four cholecystectomies were performed and 53 (8.5%) required LSC. 81.8% were fenestrating LSC. Male sex

Status of HPV disease and vaccination programmes in LMICs: Introduction to special issue.

Sexually transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are extremely common in both men and women and while most will clear naturally, some may progress to cervical cancer and other cancers. Despite the availability of prophylactic vaccines and well-established screening and treatment practices, the global burden of HPV-related disease remains high, particularly in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs). We outline the current global epidemiology of cervical cancer disease incidence and mortality, with the highest burden in Africa and Asia. As part of a strategy to eliminate cervical canc

Direct and indirect effects of hepatitis B vaccination in four low- and middle-income countries.

Population-level vaccination effects of the hepatitis B vaccine were investigated in four low- and middle-income countries with different levels of vertical and horizontal transmission. Indirect vaccination effects constitute a large proportion of overall vaccination effects of the vaccination programmes in all four countries (over 70% by 2030 in all four countries). However, countries with higher levels of vertical transmission benefit less from indirect vaccination effects from the infant hepatitis B vaccine series during the first decades of the vaccination programme, making the birth dose

Trends and projections of age-appropriate vaccination coverage in 41 low- and middle- income countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, 2000-2030.

INTRODUCTION: Routine immunization programs have focused on increasing vaccination coverage, which is equally important for decreasing vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), particularly in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). We estimated the trends and projections of age-appropriate vaccination coverage at the regional and national levels, as well as place of residence and wealth index in LMICs. METHODS: In total, 174 nationally representative household surveys from 2000 to 2020 from 41 LMICs were included in this study. Bayesian hierarchical regression models were used to estimate

Disparities in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and cardiometabolic conditions in low and lower middle-income countries: a systematic analysis from the global burden of disease study 2019.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and cardiometabolic conditions affect populations across economic strata. Nevertheless, there are limited epidemiological studies addressing these diseases in low (LICs) and lower-middle-income countries (lower MICs). Therefore, an analysis of the trend of MASLD and cardiometabolic conditions in these countries is necessary. METHODS: From 2000 to 2019, jointpoint regression analysis was employed to calculate the prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for cardiometabolic conditions including

Using qualitative systems mapping to analyze the linkages between the behavioral and social (BeSD) determinants of routine childhood immunization in LMICs.

BACKGROUND: Designing effective immunization programs requires a strong understanding of how the factors affecting vaccine uptake interplay. In this review, we analyze the relationships between the Behavioral and Social Drivers (BeSD) of routine immunization using qualitative systems mapping (QSM). METHODS: In this review, we analyzed 92 experimental and quasi-experimental impact evaluations (IEs) from 11 LMICs that were published between 2010 and 2020. Secondary literature on the study context or the intervention was also included. The WHO's behavioral and social determinants (BeSD) framewor

Progress towards universal health coverage and inequalities in infant mortality: an analysis of 4·1 million births from 60 low-income and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2019.

BACKGROUND: Expanding universal health coverage (UHC) might not be inherently beneficial to poorer populations without the explicit targeting and prioritising of low-income populations. This study examines whether the expansion of UHC between 2000 and 2019 is associated with reduced socioeconomic inequalities in infant mortality in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We did a retrospective analysis of birth data compiled from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHSs). We analysed all births between 2000 and 2019 from all DHSs available for this period. The primary outcome was
