BACKGROUND: Since complete functional restoration after spinal cord injury may not always be possible, the major focus in such cases has to be on rehabilitation. We performed surgery in such patients to reconstruct important absent hand functions viz. pinch and hook using various methods described in literature and compared their outcome.
METHODS: A total of 29 procedures were performed in ten patients (18 upper limbs) with tetraparesis consequent to cervical spine injury distal to C6 level who had at least grade 3 power of elbow extension but had not documented any significant improvement in

Tennis is a popular sport with tens of millions of players participating worldwide. This popularity was one factor leading to the reappearance of tennis as a medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The volume of play, combined with the physical demands of the sports, can lead to injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Overall, injury incidence and prevalence in tennis has been reported in a number of investigations. The sport creates specific demands on the musculoskeletal system, with acute injuries, such as ankle sprains, being more frequent in the lower extremity whil

Pushing or pulling an object constitutes the majority of manual materials handling tasks. Anthropometric differences between workers alter pushing and pulling strategies at fixed heights, potentially modifying exposures and causing overexertion. Capability normalized to arm posture rather than work height remains unknown, and the purpose of this research was to quantify maximal pushing and pulling strength and upper extremity joint moments using fixed humeral abduction angles and a flexed arm position. Twenty university-aged females completed maximal pushes and pulls at 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, and

A 20-year-old man was subjected to high-voltage electric burn, which was occupational. The patient was admitted to AlGalaa Military Medical Complex almost 2 weeks after the accident had happened. According to Lund and Browder's chart, the patient had a 40% total body surface area burn involving the upper limbs, anterior and posterior trunks, and the left thigh (third- and fourth-degree burns). The aim of this study was to stabilize the patient by conducting lifesaving operations in multiple scheduled sessions, bilateral below-elbow amputations, escharotomies, and excision of affected ribs and

Calcinosis cutis is an uncommon disorder caused by an abnormal deposit of calcium phosphate in the skin in various parts of the body. Four main types of calcinosis cutis have been recognized according to etiology: associated with localized or widespread tissue changes or damage (dystrophic calcification), that associated with an abnormal calcium and phosphorus metabolism (metastatic calcification), not associated with any tissue damage or demonstrable metabolic disorder (idiopathic calcification), and Iatrogenic. Very few cases of idiopathic calcinosis cutis are reported in early childhood in

The combination of excessive radiocapitellar compressive forces and the limited vascularity of the capitellum are responsible for the development of osteochondritis dissecans. Repetitive compressive forces are generated by throwing or racket swinging motions or from constant axial compressive loads on the elbow, which are common in athletes such as gymnasts. Symptoms include activity-associated pain and stiffness. Physical examination findings show tenderness over the radiocapitellar joint and, commonly, loss of extension. Plain radiographs may show flattening and sclerosis of the capitellum,

Treatment of 49 year old male with frostbite of feet is presented. The treatment included reconstruction of plantar surfaces in the both feet. Necrotic tissues were excised seven weeks after the injury and the wounds were split skin grafted. Two staged reconstruction with free neurovascular radial forearm flaps was carried out 15 and 20 weeks after the frostbite. The both flaps healed without complications. The patient recovered touch sensibility in the flap skin after 6 months and than he was able to walk. He returned to his professional job. 12 years after the reconstruction the patient can

Upper-limb orthotic systems have been designed for restoring the upper-limb functions of individuals with disabilities resulting from spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke and muscular dystrophy. These systems employ either functional electrical stimulation or external power. It is proposed that, instead of time-consuming and complicated monitoring using sensors and motion analysis, a software simulator with both angular displacement and acceleration parameters can facilitate the design of a control strategy for an orthosis. Reaching movements of three cervical SCI subjects are used to verify the s

Twenty-eight patients were treated for humeral shaft nonunions. Host factors associated with humeral nonunion included a high rate of significant medical problems and significant local tissue trauma from the initiating injury. Comminuted fractures and fractures that were either long oblique or spiral in configuration were also heavily represented in this series. Midshaft was the most common anatomic location (n = 17). Previous surgery had been unsuccessful in 22 of the patients. All the humeral nonunions were treated by either standard AO compression plate technique with iliac crest bone graft

BACKGROUND: Ulnar nerve compression at the elbow is frequently encountered as the second most common compression neuropathy in the arm. As dexterity may be severely affected, the disease entity can seriously interfere with daily life and work. However, epidemiological research considering the risk factors is rarely performed. This study intended to investigate whether potential risk factors based on historical belief contribute to the development of ulnar nerve compression at the elbow.
METHOD: A hospital based case control study was performed of patients that underwent surgical treatment for

INTRODUCTION: In children, the choice between percutaneous pinning (PP) and open pinning fixation (OPF) for the surgical treatment of fractures of the distal humerus remains controversial, especially the PP method for internal humeral condylar (IHC) fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty fractures of the distal humerus in children were treated surgically in our hospital over a ten year period. 47% (n = 38) were supracondylar (SC), 20% (n = 16) comminuted (COM), 18% (n = 14) internal humeral condylar (IHC), and 15% (n = 12) lateral humeral condylar (LHC). We used PP, OPF and three times osteo

Dear Editor, Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a chronic, inflammatory, papulosquamous skin disorder that is characterized by follicular hyperkeratosis and reddish-orange, scaling dermatitis with islands of normal skin (1,2). PRP is classified into 5 groups based on clinical features. Type 4 PRP is characterized by well-demarcated, hyperkeratotic erythematous plaques localized on the elbows and knees with palmoplantar keratoderma (1,2). An 8-year-old girl presented to our clinic with erythematous plaques on both elbows, the legs, and the knees. Plantar keratoderma was noticed on clinical exami

BackgroundRotator cuff tears, a common cause of shoulder pain, often require surgery when conservative treatment fails. Arthroscopic repair is standard, though re-tear rates remain high.ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify the shoulder function questionnaires and strength tests that are significant factors for determining the necessity of rotator cuff repair and to build an effective machine learning model.MethodsThis study included 183 patients between January 2008 and December 2016. Among them, 89 patients underwent non-surgical treatment for rotator cuff injuries, whereas 94 underwent arth

INTRODUCTION: Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are the most frequently encountered injuries around the elbow with predominantly occurring in age group 5-7 years, with a higher incidence among male. Research has indicated that for displaced humeral supracondylar fractures, both closed and open reduction with internal fixation using K-wires results in more stable outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the functional and radiological outcome of operative management of supracondylar fracture humerus in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a prospective study fr
