The effects of motion artifact and low perfusion on the performance of a new generation of pulse oximeters in volunteers undergoing hypoxemia.

INTRODUCTION: Motion artifact and low perfusion often lead to faulty or absent pulse oximetry readings in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: Determine the impact of motion artifact and low perfusion on newly introduced pulse oximetry technologies during hypoxemic episodes in healthy volunteers. METHODS: Five different pulse oximeters from 4 manufacturers (the Datex Ohmeda 3900P; the Agilent; the Nellcor N-3000; the Nellcor N-395; and the Schiller OX-1, which is the European version of the Ivy SatGuard 2000 with Masimo SET) were compared with respect to their ability (separated or in combination) …

Effects of functional electric stimulation on upper limb motor function and shoulder range of motion in hemiplegic patients.

OBJECTIVES: The present study examines functional electric stimulation (FES) applied on patients with hemiplegia of short and long duration for the purpose of upper limb motor recovery and increasing shoulder range of motion. DESIGN: Patients with hemiplegia with subluxation participating in the study were placed into a short-duration group or a long-duration group. Subjects in each group were then randomly assigned to either the control or the experimental subgroup. The experimental groups of both short- and long-duration groups received FES therapy in which the supraspinatus and posterior d…

A randomised, placebo-controlled study comparing two formulations of dimenhydrinate with respect to efficacy in motion sickness and sedation.

It is known that sedation by H1 antihistaminic drugs can be reduced or avoided if slow release formulations are used for their administration, probably because of a slower increase of the drug concentration in plasma and brain. The aim of this study was to compare two different formulations of dimenhydrinate (CAS 523-87-5), a single fast release tablet with three chewing gums (divided dose principle), with regard to their efficacy in a motion sickness model and their detrimental effect on vigilance and central nervous system (CNS) performance. Caloric stimulation of the eardrum (air at 44 degr…

[Skeletal configurations of cervical column during rest to motion transition: generalization that underlie the motor repertoire in rodents].

During forward locomotion, guinea pigs adopted a posture which, although different, was as stereotyped as at rest. The whole extent of the vertebral column was extended, parallel to the earth-horizontal plane. This result supports the hypothesis that, in mammals, gaze and postural control by the central nervous system would be simplified by the adoption of a limited number of skeletal configurations. They would be optimized for energy saving, biomechanical efficacy and limitation of the number of degrees of freedom of the skeletal apparatus. Transition between rest and forward locomotion displ…

Measuring trunk motions in industry: variability due to task factors, individual differences, and the amount of data collected.

The focus of this study was to determine the amount of data needed to ensure sufficient accuracy in estimating mean trunk motions of employees performing industrial manual materials handling tasks. Over 450 tasks were selected, in which the load weight and the vertical start and destination heights of the activity remained constant throughout the task. Data were collected as employees did their work at the job site, using the Lumbar Motion Monitor. Variance components were estimated in a hierarchical design and used to compute standard errors of mean trunk kinematic measures. These analyses fo…

Characteristics of frequency-of-seeing curves for a motion stimulus in glaucoma eyes, glaucoma suspect eyes, and normal eyes.

This study compared frequency-of-seeing curves for a line displacement test in glaucoma patients and normals. Probit analysis of the frequency-of-seeing curves provided the motion thresholds and the slopes of the frequency-of-seeing curves, represented by the interquartile range. The thresholds and interquartile ranges were significantly elevated in the glaucoma eyes and suspect eyes, compared to controls. A logistic regression model incorporating both the interquartile range and threshold significantly improved the sensitivity of the motion test in the suspects. Abnormal shallowing of the slo…

What's water got to do with it? A nuclear magnetic resonance study of molecular motion in pig stratum corneum.

The 1H and 2H magnetic resonance signals from pig stratum corneum were measured as a function of hydration. The 1H free induction decay contained two components, one motionally restricted and the other isotropically mobile on the timescale of 10(-5) s. From its T2 decay, the mobile signal was further subdivided into two components; one, which was 11% of the signal and 5.5% of the mass of the dehydrated stratum corneum, was assigned to nonaqueous tissue (likely hydrocarbons) and the other to water. As water content increased from 0 to 0.25 gH2O/gSC, the second moment of the motionally restricte…

Effects of dobutamine stimulation on myocardial blood flow, glucose metabolism, and wall motion in normal and dysfunctional myocardium.

BACKGROUND: This investigation examines the effects of inotropic stimulation on myocardial blood flow (MBF) and glucose metabolism (MRGlc) i … (26.4 +/- 47.3%; NS). Myocardium with normal rest MBF was classified as normal remote (normal wall motion, n = 8) or abnormal remote (abnormal wall motion, n = 11). Dobutamine raised MBF similarly in normal subjects and in normal remote regions (by 82 +/- 85% and 84 +/- 42%, P < .01) but by only 33 +/- 34% in abnormal remote regions. MRGlc declined by 4 …

Slow motions in oriented phospholipid bilayers and effects of cholesterol or gramicidin. A 19F-NMR T1 rho study.

In an extension of our earlier work (Peng, Z.-y., V. Simplaceanu, I. J. Lowe, and C. Ho. 1988. Biophys. J. 54:81-95), the rotating-frame nuclear spin-lattice relaxation (T1 rho) technique has been used to investigate the slow molecular motions (10(-4) - 10(-6) s) in lipid bilayers prepared from protonated or perdeuterated 19F-labeled phospholipids in the absence and presence of cholesterol or gramicidin as membrane-interacting molecules. Complications caused by the 19F-1H cross-polarization observed previously can be removed by the substitution of 2H for 1H in the acyl chains. Only a weak depe…

[Changes in the functional activity of cortical brain structures and their blood supply during motion sickness in the alert rabbit].

In alert rabbits, sea sickness induced an increase in the cerebral blood supply, alteration of the ECoG frequency components, bradycardia, hypotension. Different responses of the bioelectrical activity were revealed in summer and winter. The enhancement of bioelectrical activity and blood flow in the motor cortex were shorter than in the auditory and visual areas. These changes become more obvious in repeated fits of sea sickness and gradually reduced later on. In winter, the responses of the rabbit electrophysiological parameters are more obvious and longer lasting than in summer. The blood s

Echocardiographic manifestation of annuloaortic ectasia: its "paradoxical" motion of the aorta and premature systolic closure of the aortic vale.

The echocardiographic features of annuloaortic ectasia were studied in 12 patients. Eleven of them exhibited skeletal and/or ophthalmic findings of Marfan's syndrome and one was considered as having forme fruste. Echocardiograms revealed not only marked dilatation of the aortic root but also unique motion of the aortic wall and aortic valve. Posterior motion of the posterior aortic wall during early to middle ejection period, i.e., "paradoxical" motion, was noted in eight cases, and premature systolic partial closure of the aortic valve was seen in all cases.

Non-Rigid Motion-Compensated MR Multitasking for Free-Breathing Low-Dose Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MRI in the Abdomen.

PURPOSE: To improve free-breathing low-dose quantitative dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI for imaging pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. METHODS: We introduced non-rigid (NR) motion compensation (MoCo) into MR Multitasking using a novel "in-subspace" formulation that directly applies motion fields to spatial feature maps (eigenimages), reducing computational cost relative to warping in the spatiotemporal domain. We evaluated NR-MoCo DCE Multitasking in n = 11 healthy volunteers scanned using 20% (0.02 mmol/kg) of the standard Gd dose; 10 of these volunteers underwent a repeat 20%-dose scan …

Assessment of data-driven gating for cardiac motion extraction and LVEF estimation from routine [18F]FDG LAFOV PET.

Objective.Chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity can lead to irreversible heart failure. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is routinely monitored during treatment, but conventional assessment requires dedicated cardiac imaging and clinical resources. This study evaluated a deviceless data-driven gating (DDG) framework for extracting cardiac motion from routine [18F] FDG positron emission tomography (PET) emission data and, secondary, assessed its feasibility for LVEF estimation.Approach.The DDG framework is based on histo images and uses anatomical masking for frequency-domain filtering t…

The Role of Motion Correction Tools in Left Ventricular Functional Parameters Measured by Gated [13N]NH3 PET/CT.

Background/Objectives: Gated cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) synchronizes PET data to the cardiac cycle based on an electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, providing left ventricular (LV) functional and geometrical parameters. Nevertheless, image artifacts, due to cardiac-, breathing-, and/or patient-motion occurring during image acquisition, undermine the reliability and clinical utility of these parameters. This study aims to elucidate the effect of two motion correction (MC) tools, CardioFreeze (CF) and a data-driven motion correction (DDMC) prototype, on LV functional and geometrical pa…

Breathable, Biocompatible, Ultrathin Bilayer Epidermal Electrodes for Long-Term and Motion-Artifact-Resistant Monitoring ofHigh-Fidelity Electrophysiological Signals.

Long-term monitoring of electrophysiological signals is of great importance for continuous health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and intelligent human-machine interaction. However, developing a breathable and biocompatible skin-electrode interface with low interfacial impedance for long-term and motion-artifact-resistant epidermal monitoring remains a major challenge. To address this issue, we propose a bilayer design that enables functional decoupling via synergistic structural integration. An ultrathin bilayer epidermal electrode integrating an ultrathin poly(α-lipoic acid) (PLA) adhesive la…
