Al-Stoichiometry-Engineered Defect Profiles in InAlZnO Nanofibers for Balanced Charge Transport and Optical Plasticity.

Metal oxide optoelectronic synapses are promising for neuromorphic vision, but combining a low dark current with sustained photoinduced plasticity remains challenging. Here, Al stoichiometry is engineered in electrospun In1AlxZn0.08O (x = 0.007, 0.011, and 0.015) nanofiber networks to tune sub-bandgap defects, carrier transport, and photocarrier relaxation. Optical, spectroscopic, electrical, and synaptic measurements identify 1.1 atomic % Al as optimal. Strong Al-O bonding suppresses excess oxygen-vacancy-related donor states while preserving the In 5s transport network. The optimized device

3D Pulmonary Artery Segmentation from CTA Scans Using Deep Learning with Realistic Data Augmentation.

The characterization of the vasculature in the mediastinum, more specifically the pulmonary artery, is of vital importance for the evaluation of several pulmonary vascular diseases. Thus, the goal of this study is to automatically segment the pulmonary artery (PA) from computed tomography angiography images, which opens up the opportunity for more complex analysis of the evolution of the PA geometry in health and disease and can be used in complex fluid mechanics models or individualized medicine. For that purpose, a new 3D convolutional neural network architecture is proposed, which is traine

Modelling the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on the neural encoding of speech in noise.

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can non-invasively modulate neuronal activity in the cerebral cortex, in particular at the frequency of the applied stimulation. Such modulation can matter for speech processing, since the latter involves the tracking of slow amplitude fluctuations in speech by cortical activity. tACS with a current signal that follows the envelope of a speech stimulus has indeed been found to influence the cortical tracking and to modulate the comprehension of the speech in background noise. However, how exactly tACS influences the speech-related cortical ac

Neural and cognitive bases of upper limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neural and cognitive bases of upper limb apraxia in corticobasal degeneration (CBD). METHODS: Eighteen patients with CBD underwent a cognitive neuropsychological assessment of apraxia and resting [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose PET scanning. Two complementary measures of apraxia were computed for each modality of gesture production. First, a performance score measured error frequency during gesture execution. Second, as a more stringent test of the integrity of the praxis system, the correction score measured the patient's ability to correct his or her errors on a sec

Dynamic Reorganization of Brain Network Information during Emotion and Identity Recognition.

Facial expression recognition jointly encodes identity and emotion within large scale brain networks, yet how identity and emotion information are represented and dynamically propagated remains unknown. To address this, we employed a dual-task paradigm integrating emotion and identity recognition with dynamic facial expressions, and recorded MEG signals to track millisecond-level neural dynamics. Using a network-based decoding framework, we identified discriminative spatiotemporal patterns supporting emotion and identity processing. We further applied Partial Information Decomposition (PID) to

Efficient characterization of double-cross-linked networks in hydrogels using data-inspired coarse-grained molecular dynamics model.

The network structure within polymers significantly influences their mechanical properties, including their strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance. All-atom molecular dynamics (AAMD) simulations offer a method to investigate the energy dissipation mechanism within polymers during deformation and fracture; Such an approach is, however, computationally inefficient when used to analyze polymers with complex network structures, such as the common chemically double-networked hydrogels. Alternatively, coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) models, which reduce the computational degrees of fre

A Mixed Dual-Branch Network for Detecting Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy and Parkinsonian Syndromes via Gait Analysis.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and parkinsonian syndromes (PS) present similar motor symptoms, often causing misdiagnosis due to current clinical diagnostic limitations. Misdiagnosis can exacerbate patient conditions or result in unnecessary surgical interventions, thereby increasing surgical risks and the likelihood of serious postoperative complications. This study aims to develop a mixed dual-branch network for classifying CSM patients, PS patients, and healthy individuals using gait data. This study recruits 51 CSM patients, 49 PS patients, and 33 healthy controls. The kinematic dat

Publicly available machine learning models for identifying opioid misuse from the clinical notes of hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Automated de-identification methods for removing protected health information (PHI) from the source notes of the electronic health record (EHR) rely on building systems to recognize mentions of PHI in text, but they remain inadequate at ensuring perfect PHI removal. As an alternative to relying on de-identification systems, we propose the following solutions: (1) Mapping the corpus of documents to standardized medical vocabulary (concept unique identifier [CUI] codes mapped from the Unified Medical Language System) thus eliminating PHI as inputs to a machine learning model; and (2)

Dissociable Disruptions in Thalamic and Hippocampal Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Youth with 22q11.2 Deletions.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a recurrent copy number variant with high penetrance for developmental neuropsychiatric disorders. Study of individuals with 22q11DS therefore may offer key insights into neural mechanisms underlying such complex illnesses. Resting-state functional connectivity MRI studies in idiopathic schizophrenia have consistently revealed disruption of thalamic and hippocampal circuitry. Here, we sought to test whether this circuitry is similarly disrupted in the context of this genetic high-risk condition. To this end, resting-state functional connectivity patte

Microscopic computed tomography with AI-CNN-powered image analysis: the path to phenotype bleomycin-induced lung injury.

Bleomycin (BLM)-induced lung injury in mice is a valuable model for investigating the molecular mechanisms that drive inflammation and fibrosis and for evaluating potential therapeutic approaches to treat the disease. Given high variability in the BLM model, it is critical to accurately phenotype the animals in the course of an experiment. In the present study, we aimed to demonstrate the utility of microscopic computed tomography (µCT) imaging combined with an artificial intelligence (AI)-convolutional neural network (CNN)-powered lung segmentation for rapid phenotyping of BLM mice. µCT was p

Neuroimaging Examination of Driving Mode Switching Corresponding to Changes in the Driving Environment.

Car driving is supported by perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills trained through continuous daily practice. One of the skills that characterize experienced drivers is to detect changes in the driving environment and then flexibly switch their driving modes in response to the changes. Previous functional neuroimaging studies on motor control investigated the mechanisms underlying behaviors adaptive to changes in control properties or parameters of experimental devices such as a computer mouse or a joystick. The switching of multiple internal models mainly engages adaptive behaviors and under

Effects of attention training technique on brain function in high- and low-cognitive-attentional syndrome individuals: Regional dynamics before, during, and after a single session of ATT.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Training Technique (ATT) is a key therapeutic tool in metacognitive therapy. There are numerous studies on the behavioral effects of ATT, however the neural mechanisms at work in the training are yet to be uncovered. To date there have been no controlled fMRI studies of ATT. METHOD: We conducted a randomized double-blind controlled study of two groups with varying levels of cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS). Groups with high (n = 43) and low (n = 46) levels of CAS underwent a single session of ATT or a control condition (CON) in an MRI scanner. Participants underwent r

Differential cortical contribution of syntax and semantics: An fMRI study on two-word phrasal processing.

Linguistic expressions consist of sequences of words combined together to form phrases and sentences. The neurocognitive process handling word combination is drawing increasing attention among the neuroscientific community, given that the underlying syntactic and semantic mechanisms of such basic combinations-although essential to the generation of more complex structures-still need to be consistently determined. The current experiment was conducted to disentangle the neural networks supporting syntactic and semantic processing at the level of two-word combinations. We manipulated the combinat

Developing a fully automated imaging biomarker for HCC risk assessment via MRI-based tumor segmentation and EPM.

This study investigates the feasibility of using automated tumor segmentation as the region of interest for early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Enhancement Pattern Mapping (EPM) is used as a voxel-wise imaging biomarker within the region of interest once segmentations are generated. We implement PocketNet, a lightweight convolutional neural network, to segment liver tumors and evaluate performance. To contextualize model accuracy, we estimate the theoretical upper bound of segmentation performance through inter-observer comparisons of manua

Neural Wave Propagation for Surgical Video Action Recognition: A New Dataset and Baseline.

Accurate and efficient recognition of surgical actions in videos is critical for advancing AI-driven surgical robotics. However, current surgical video action recognition (SVAR) datasets suffer from limitations such as small scale, low resolution, inconsistent annotations, and insufficient action coverage. Most latest video recognition models are trained on large-scale common datasets and underperform in SVAR due to architectures that suppress high-frequency visual details (crucial for recognizing surgical tools and motions) and lack a strong spatial inductive bias, requiring extensive trainin

Radar HRV Monitoring With Physiological Prior Inspired Deep Neural Networks.

Radar sensing has emerged as a promising solution for the contactless monitoring of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a crucial indicator of the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous systems. However, due to signal noise and interference that easily obscure heartbeat details, along with variations in heartbeat across different physiological conditions, existing methods remain restricted to laboratory settings with healthy subjects and fail in real-world scenarios involving more complex physiological conditions. In this study, we propose a physiological prior-inspired deep learning framework for rob

ECG-Based Detection of Acute Myocardial Infarction Using a Wrist-Worn Device.

BACKGROUND: A wrist-worn wearable device for acquiring limb and chest ECG leads (wECG) may constitute a promising approach to detection of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). However, it remains to be demonstrated whether the information conveyed by the wECG is sufficient for AMI detection. OBJECTIVE: To explore explainable machine learning models for detecting AMI using the wECG. METHODS: Two types of machine learning models are explored: a convolutional neural network (CNN) using the raw ECG as input and a gradient-boosting decision tree (GBDT) using clinically informative features. 123 par

End-to-End Spatiotemporal Analysis of Color Doppler Echocardiograms: Application for Rheumatic Heart Disease Detection.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) represents a significant global health challenge, disproportionately affecting over 40 million people in low- and middle-income countries. Early detection through color Doppler echocardiography is crucial for treating RHD, but it requires specialized physicians who are often scarce in resource-limited settings. To address this disparity, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven tools for RHD screening can provide scalable, autonomous solutions to improve access to critical healthcare services in underserved regions. This paper introduces RADAR (Rapid AI-Assisted Echoca

Machine learning surrogate forward models for biomechanical laryngeal control.

Accurate modeling of laryngeal motor control is key to understanding typical and disordered voice production. Traditional biomechanical plant models based on ordinary differential equations can be computationally demanding in closed-loop control settings, particularly when repeatedly initialized and evaluated over dense parameter grids. Runtime depends strongly on solver implementation, hardware, initialization strategy, and numerical optimization. This study evaluates feature-driven machine learning (ML) regressors, specifically random forest (RF), multilayer perceptron neural networks (NN),
