Ultrasound-Based Predictive Model to Assess the Risk of Orbital Malignancies.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound (US) is widely used for evaluating various orbital conditions. However, accurately diagnosing malignant orbital masses using US remains challenging. We aimed to develop an ultrasonic feature-based model to predict the presence of malignant tumors in the orbit. METHODS: A total of 510 patients with orbital masses were enrolled between January 2017 and April 2023. They were divided into a development cohort and a validation cohort. In the development cohort (n = 408), the ultrasonic and clinical features with differential values were identified. Based on these features, a …

Overdestabilization vs Overstabilization in the Theoretical Analysis of f-Orbital Covalency.

The complex nature of the f-orbital electronic structures and their interaction with the chemical environment pose significant computational challenges. Advanced computational techniques that variationally include scalar relativities and spin-orbit coupling directly at the molecular orbital level have been developed to address this complexity. Among these, variational relativistic multiconfigurational multireference methods stand out for their high accuracy and systematic improvement in studies of f-block complexes. Additionally, these advanced methods offer the potential for calibrating low-s…

Adjunctive transseptal corridor: Technique for endoscopic resection of orbital tumor.

The transnasal endoscopic approach is increasingly used for resection of tumors that are located inferiorly and medially within the orbit. However, this usually requires multiple-handed manipulations, which demand a second corridor for an assistant. Here, we introduce a simple transseptal corridor from the contra-nare, to facilitate assistant instrument maneuverability. This simple, minimally invasive skill greatly improves operation efficiency and deserves greater attention in endoscopic orbital surgery.

Mitigation of Gilbert Damping in the CoFe/CuOx Orbital Torque System.

Charge-spin interconversion processes underpin the generation of spin-orbit torques in magnetic/nonmagnetic bilayers. However, efficient sources of spin currents such as 5d metals are also efficient spin sinks, resulting in a large increase of magnetic damping. Here we show that a partially oxidized 3d metal can generate a strong orbital torque without a significant increase in damping. Measurements of the torque efficiency ξ and Gilbert damping α in CoFe/CuOx and CoFe/Pt indicate that ξ is comparable in the two systems. The increase in damping relative to a single CoFe layer is Δα < 0.002 in …

Orbital Sarcoma with BCOR Genetic Alterations in the Pediatric Age Group.

Introduction: Pediatric orbital tumors encompass a wide spectrum of neoplasms, many of which are malignant small round cell tumors with overlapping histology. Sarcomas with BCOR genetic alterations are undifferentiated round cell sarcomas (URCS) characterized by BCOR rearrangements or internal tandem duplications, having distinct clinical features. Being previously unrecognized in the orbit, they have potential for misdiagnosis. Patients: We describe two cases of orbital sarcomas with BCOR genetic alterations. Results: Both girls, 8 and 16 months of age, respectively, presented with progressiv…

Characteristics of Hyaluronan Metabolism During Myofibroblast Differentiation in Orbital Fibroblasts.

PURPOSE: To study the impact of myofibroblast differentiation (MD) on hyaluronan (HA) turnover in orbital fibroblasts (OFs) focusing on the expression of its key enzymes and their potential implications in the pathogenesis of thyroid eye disease (TED). METHODS: Primary cultures of OFs were established from tissue samples (TED OFs, n = 4; non-TED OFs, n = 5). MD was induced by TGF-β1 (5 ng/mL). Measurements were performed after 24- and 72-hour treatments. The proliferation rate was determined by 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation. HA level and size were measured using an aggrecan-bas…

Medial sural artery perforator flap following orbital exenteration.

An extended orbital exenteration defect in a male in his mid-80s was successfully reconstructed with a medial sural artery perforator flap. To our knowledge, this flap has not been described in the literature for such defects until now. While it may require meticulous intramuscular perforator dissection, it provides several advantages; it is thin, pliable, has a long pedicle of large calibre facilitating microanastomosis and provides adequate coverage where the amount of chimeric muscle can easily be tailored to the defect's surface area and volume. In addition, its robust vascular supply can …

Surgical treatment of orbital tumors in a single center: Analysis and results.

BACKGROUND: Orbital tumors, arising within the bony orbit and its contents, present diverse challenges due to their varied origins and complex anatomical context. These tumors, classified as primary, secondary, or metastatic, are further subdivided into intraconal and extraconal based on their relationship with the muscle cone. This classification significantly influences surgical approach and management. This study highlights surgical experiences with orbital tumors, underscoring the importance of tailored surgical approaches based on the lesion's site and its proximity to the optic nerve. M…

Primary cerebral hydatid cyst with orbital extension: A case report.

Hydatid cyst, which is caused by the cestode echinococcus granulosus, is endemic in many countries around the world. Despite the frequency of this disease, no previous case of cerebral hydatid cyst with orbital extension has been reported, demonstrating the scarcity of this presentation. Cerebral hydatid cyst may be primary or secondary. Given to the nonspecifity of the clinical symptoms, cross sectional imaging, including CT and MRI, play an important role in the diagnosis by ruling out differential diagnoses, which are represented essentially by neoplastic and nonneoplastic intraparenchymal …

Prevalence of TERT Promoter Mutations in Orbital Solitary Fibrous Tumors.

The orbital manifestation of a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is exceptionally rare and poses specific challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Its rather exceptional behavior among all SFTs comprises a high tendency towards local recurrence, but it rarely culminates in metastatic disease. This raises the question of prognostic factors in orbital SFTs (oSFTs). Telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT)-promoter mutations have previously been linked to an unfavorable prognosis in SFTs of other locations. We analyzed the prevalence of TERT promoter mutations of SFTs in the orbital compartment. We perfo…

Pure Orbital Floor Blow-In Fracture: An Extremely Rare Case.

A 57-year-old man presented with left diplopia on an upward gaze and ophthalmalgia after hitting the left side of his head. CT revealed a fracture on the left side of the orbital floor without orbital rim fractures and the protrusion of a small bone fragment into the orbit. Hess charts indicated markedly limited vertical movement of the left eye. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with a pure orbital floor blow-in fracture (BIF). Symptoms persisted after a two-week monitoring period; therefore, the bone fragment was removed by a transcutaneous surgical approach with the assista…

Ophthalmia neonatorum complicated with neonatal orbital cellulitis: A case series.

Orbital cellulitis is an extremely rare but potentially lethal condition in neonates. The clinical presentation of neonatal orbital cellulitis can be non-specific, and minimal signs of periorbital inflammation may go unrecognised by inexperienced parents or primary care medical personnel, leading to delayed treatment. Herein, we present a case series describing ophthalmia neonatorum complicated with neonatal orbital cellulitis owing to delayed treatment. The clinical presentation, management and outcomes are described. One neonate had orbital cellulitis, while the other had impending orbital c…

Marginal Full Thickness Blepharotomy for Management of Orbital Compartment Syndrome.

PURPOSE: To assess the utility of a marginal full thickness blepharotomy (MFTB) for the treatment of orbital compartment syndrome. METHODS: An experimental study design employing a cadaver model for orbital compartment syndrome was used to assess the efficacy of an MFTB. Elevated orbital compartment pressures were created in 12 orbits of 6 fresh cadaver heads. Intraocular pressure, as an analog of orbital pressure, was measured before and after inferior and superior MFTBs were performed. Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data to assess the efficacy of the procedure. RESULTS…

Orbital Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis: A Systematic Review of 228 Cases.

Orbital Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an extremely rare disorder, and widely different manifestations often make it diagnostically challenging. The variability of symptoms - from common presentations, such as eyelid swelling and exophthalmos, to very atypical symptoms, like headaches and diplopia - frequently results in delayed diagnosis and mismanagement. This systematic review aims to describe in detail the clinical presentation, diagnostic approaches, treatment modalities, and outcomes of orbital LCH. This systematic review was performed based on the Preferred Reporting Items for S…
