Nomophobia: An Individual's Growing Fear of Being without a Smartphone-A Systematic Literature Review.

This review examines the current literature focused on nomophobia (objectives, methodological design, main variables, sample details, and measurement methods) in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. To this end, we conducted a systematic literature review in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) guidelines. The initial sample consisted of 142 articles, of which 42 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in detail. The findings show that the current research is in an exploratory phase, with a greater predominance of descriptive, nonexperimental,

Reduced Risk-Taking After Prior Losses in Pathological Gamblers Under Treatment and Healthy Control Group but not in Problem Gamblers.

A group of pathological gamblers and a group of problem gamblers (i.e., gamblers at risk of becoming pathological) were compared to healthy controls on their risk-taking propensity after prior losses. Each participant played both the Balloon Analogue Risk Taking task (BART) and a modified version of the same task, where individuals face five repeated predetermined early losses at the onset of the game. No significant difference in risk-taking was found between groups on the standard BART task, while significant differences emerged when comparing behaviors in the two tasks: both pathological ga

Spousal Problems and Family-to-Work Conflict Among Employed US Adults.

Using data from the 2011 National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States Refreshed Sample (N = 980), this paper examines how three types of spousal problems-poor physical health, poor mental health, and behavioral disorders-are related to respondents' family-to-work conflict (FWC) among employed adults aged 25-61. Results suggest that all three types of their spouses' problems were related to respondents' higher FWC, with their spouses' poor mental health having the strongest association. These associations were not significant after controlling for respondents' role overload, fina

[Determinism and Freedom of Choice in the Brain Functioning].

The problem is considered whether the brain response is completely determined by the stimulus and the personal experience or in some cases the brain is free to choose its behavioral response to achieve the desired goal. The attempt is made to approach to this important philosophical problem basing on modern knowledge about the brain. The paper consists of four parts. In the first part the theoretical views about the free choice problem solving are considered, including views about the freedom of choice as a useful illusion, the hypothesis on appliance of quantum mechanics laws to the brain fun

Sexual dysfunction and neuroendocrine correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder in combat veterans: Preliminary findings.

Sexual dysfunction is not a symptom of PTSD but is a common clinical complaint in trauma survivors with this disorder. In that there are biological parallels in the neuroendocrine processes underlying both PTSD and sexual behavior, we conducted an exploratory investigation of the relationship of PTSD and related neuroendocrine indicators with sexual dysfunction in armed service veterans. Major Depressive Disorder, highly comorbid with PTSD and sexual dysfunction, was also assessed. In veterans with PTSD, sexual problems were associated with plasma DHEA and cortisol, urinary catecholamines, and

The Impact of Sexual Abuse Committed by a Child on Mental Health in Adulthood.

Numerous research studies document the negative mental health outcomes associated with the experience of childhood sexual abuse. In addition, factors such as one's relationship with the perpetrator and the severity of the abuse predict the likelihood of future mental health problems. Less attention, however, has focused on the age of the perpetrator, and recent years have seen an increased interest in children who display sexual behavior problems. College students completed measures of mental health functioning and retrospective reports of maltreatment histories. Participants were categorized

[The relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and sleep-alertness problems].

Several studies have reported a relationship between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and sleep problems. Parents of children with ADHD report on decreased nocturnal sleep efficiency and sleep fragmentation compared to controls. On the other hand, objective measurements often show that these children sleep longer, and there is even a theory that suggests that daytime somnolence is the primary cause of the inattention problems seen in the disorder. Experimental sleep restriction, which leads to daytime somnolence, has been shown to be associated with ADHD-like behavior and poor c

A pediatric screening examination for psychosocial problems.

In an effort to avert the cumulative effects of unresolved emotional problems on children's social and school adjustment, a psychosocial phase was added to a pediatric multiphasic examination. Based upon a cumulative stress concept, the screening procedures included child behavior and family stress questionnaires for parents, and abbreviated standard psychological tests for children, administered by specially trained aides. Computerized results were reported to the child's pediatrician. Follow-up by mental health counselors attached to the pediatric clinic was provided for patients identified

Problem-solving training: assessing the feasibility and acceptability of delivering and evaluating a problem-solving training model for front-line prison staff and prisoners who self-harm.

OBJECTIVES: Problem-solving skills training is adaptable, inexpensive and simple to deliver. However, its application with prisoners who self-harm is unknown. The study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a problem-solving training (PST) intervention for prison staff and prisoners who self-harm, to inform the design of a large-scale study. DESIGN AND SETTING: A mixed-methods design used routinely collected data, individual outcome measures, an economic protocol and qualitative interviews at four prisons in Yorkshire and Humber, UK. PARTICIPANTS: (i) Front-line prison staff, (ii) ma

The Triality of Strain, Self-Control, and Eating Disorders.

This study examines the potential relationship between eating disorders and antisocial behaviors through the lenses of the general theory of crime and general strain theory. We utilized the data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, a longitudinal study of a nationally representative sample of juveniles in grades 7 to 12 in the United States between 1994 and 2008. We constructed three separate measures of eating disorders and examined their relationships with both petty theft and aggressive behaviors. Results indicated that previous traumatic experiences (such as

A Survivor's Journey: Preliminary efficacy of an online problem-solving therapy for survivors of pediatric brain tumor.

BACKGROUND: Although pediatric brain tumor survivors are at high risk for a variety of psychosocial and neurocognitive late effects, there are few evidence-based interventions to address their needs. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of an online problem-solving intervention on improving the quality of life and executive dysfunction among adolescent and young adult brain tumor survivors. PROCEDURE: A Survivor's Journey was adapted from a similar intervention for survivors of traumatic brain injuries, and involved self-guided web modules providing training in problem-solving a

Affective and deliberative processes in risky choice: age differences in risk taking in the Columbia Card Task.

The authors investigated risk taking and underlying information use in 13- to 16- and 17- to 19-year-old adolescents and in adults in 4 experiments, using a novel dynamic risk-taking task, the Columbia Card Task (CCT). The authors investigated risk taking under differential involvement of affective versus deliberative processes with 2 versions of the CCT, constituting the most direct test of a dual-system explanation of adolescent risk taking in the literature so far. The "hot" CCT was designed to trigger more affective decision making, whereas the "cold" CCT was designed to trigger more delib

Experiential avoidance as a mediator of relationships between cognitions and hair-pulling severity.

Cognitive-behavioral models suggest that certain cognitions and beliefs are functionally related to hair pulling in persons with trichotillomania (TTM), but little empirical data have been collected to test such claims. This study assessed dysfunctional beliefs about appearance, shameful cognitions, and fear of negative evaluation and their relation to hair-pulling severity in a sample of individuals self-reporting a diagnosis of TTM. Results showed significant correlations between these cognitions and hair-pulling severity; however, relations diminished or disappeared when controlling for exp

Specific impairments in self-regulation in children exposed to alcohol prenatally.

The present study utilizes a conceptual framework derived from theories of cognition to explain the pattern of behavioral and learning problems observed in subjects with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Based on a modern interpretation of Luria's theory of self-regulation, this study used a neuropsychological test battery to compare 10 subjects (mean age = 13 years) having FAS/FAE with 10 control subjects (mean age = 12 years and 9 months). Subjects with FAS/FAE were relatively high functioning and did not significantly differ from controls with respect to receptiv

Sexual aggression by an acquaintance: methods of coping and later psychological adjustment.

The main purpose of the present study was to determine if methods of coping with sexual aggression by acquaintances were associated with psychological adjustment beyond what could be predicted by characteristics of the attack itself and beyond what could be predicted by methods of coping used to deal with other stressors. Out of 401 undergraduate women respondents (mean age = 19), 106 or 26% had been victims of sexual aggression by an acquaintance since the age of 16. Two years on average after the assault, these women reported more psychological problems on the Brief Symptom Inventory (Deroga

Septum and medial frontal cortex contribution to spatial problem-solving.

An attempt was made to contrast the effects of lesions to the medial frontal cortex and septum in two spatial tasks. In the fixed-goal (FG) task, the food was located on the same table throughout testing, and the start table was randomly varied from day to day. In the variable-goal (VG) task, the start table remained constant but the food was randomly distributed on one or the other of the two remaining tables. In both tasks, normal animals performed better than frontal and septal rats whose performance, however, improved over days in the FG, but not in the VG, task. In both tasks, significant

Alcohol and drug abuse in treated alcoholics: a comparison of men and women.

A survey of 229 male patients and 198 female patients who met lifetime DSM-III criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence was carried out in Toronto, Canada. The patients were evaluated with the National Institute of Mental Health Diagnostic Interview Schedule and other substance abuse rating scales. The prevalence of individual alcohol and drug symptoms, the patterns of abuse, and the prevalence of drug disorders were compared in the two sexes. The study patients were younger than previous treatment samples and were more likely to have other drug disorders. While the overall prevalence of drug

Mother-infant stress contagion? Effects of an acute maternal stressor on maternal caregiving behavior and infant cortisol and crying.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum maternal distress has been associated with adverse infant outcomes. A potential pathway of how maternal distress affects infant outcomes could be alterations in maternal caregiving behavior. However, the associations between maternal distress, caregiving behavior, and infant outcomes have never been tested in a controlled experiment. This preregistered study utilized an experimental design to investigate the effects of an acute maternal stressor on infant cortisol and crying and the possible mediating role of maternal caregiving behavior. METHODS: Mother-infant dyads (N

Identifying medical interview behaviors that best elicit information from patients in clinical practice.

Many textbooks indicate the desirability of using specific medical interview behaviors to obtain information from patients, although little evidence has been presented. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between the use of medical interview behaviors and the amount of information obtained. The behaviors studied included: open-ended questions, facilitation (comments or interviewer behavior that encourages the patient to continue talking), the open-to-closed cone (the gradual narrowing of focus from an initial nondirective approach to a more direct exploration), summarizat

Role of genetic factors in human sexual behavior based on studies of Tourette syndrome and ADHD probands and their relatives.

Most significant variations in the expression of human sexuality are considered to be the result of learned behavior or psychological problems. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common, hereditary tic and disinhibition disorder sometimes associated with compulsive use of obscene words (coprolalia) and previously reported to be occasionally associated with exhibitionism. To further explore the relationship between the Gts genes and sexual behavior, questions concerning a wide range of such behaviors were administered to 1,040 subjects, 14 years of age or older, consisting of 358 TS probands, 101 non-
