This study focuses on the dynamic flow through the fetal aortic arch driven by the concurrent action of right and left ventricles. We created a parametric pulsatile computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the fetal aortic junction with physiologic vessel geometries. To gain a better biophysical understanding, an in vitro experimental fetal flow loop for flow visualization was constructed for identical CFD conditions. CFD and in vitro experimental results were comparable. Swirling flow during the acceleration phase of the cardiac cycle and unidirectional flow following mid-deceleration phas

The aim of our study was to assess the arrhythmic profile in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and its correlation with autonomic features, echocardiographic indexes and pulmonary function. We studied 9 subjects with a mean age of 42 +/- 11 years. All underwent echocardiography, 24-hour Holter monitoring, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Left ventricle ejection fraction was normal (65 +/- 6%). The right ventricle end diastolic volume was increased (108 +/- 32 ml/m2) with a slight reduction of ejection fraction (49 +/- 5%). Right ventricle systolic pressure was increased (

Sixteen children (14 neonates less than 1 week old and 2 infants aged 3 and 6 months) had a "favorable" type of pulmonary atresia with an intact interventricular septum in which the hypoplasia of the right ventricle was mild and the cavity tripartite with a well developed infundibulum arriving in contact with a good-sized pulmonary artery from which it was separated by a totally or almost totally imperforate dome. They underwent a procedure associating an infusion of prostaglandin. E1 and an attempted pulmonary valve disobliteration by interventional catheterisation: needle puncture followed b

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetically heterogeneous disorder affecting normal structure and function of motile cilia, phenotypically manifested as chronic respiratory infections, laterality defects and infertility. Autosomal recessive mutations in genes encoding for different components of the ciliary axoneme have been associated with PCD in humans and in model organisms. The CCDC151 gene encodes for a coiled-coil axonemal protein that ensures correct attachment of outer dynein arm (ODA) complexes to microtubules. A correct arrangement of dynein arm complexes is required to provide

Heart failure (HF) is increasingly recognized as a progressive syndrome that begins long before patients develop clinical signs or symptoms, during which conventional echocardiographic parameters may fail to detect early myocardial impairment. Atrial strain imaging by speckle-tracking echocardiography has emerged as a sensitive, non-invasive tool capable of identifying subtle functional abnormalities before symptoms or structural remodeling occur. Impaired left atrial (LA) reservoir strain (LASr) serves as a sensitive marker of left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction with elevated filling

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive myopathy due to mutations in the dystrophin gene. Diaphragmatic weakness in DMD causes hypoventilation and elevated afterload on the right ventricle (RV). Thus, RV dysfunction in DMD develops early in disease progression. Herein, we deliver a 30-min sustained RV preload/afterload challenge to isolated hearts of wild-type (Wt) and dystrophic (Dmdmdx-4Cv) mice at both young (2-6 month) and middle-age (8-12 month) to test the hypothesis that the dystrophic RV is susceptible to dysfunction with elevated load. Young dystrophic hearts exhibi

BACKGROUND AND AIM: This study aimed to assess right ventricular (RV) function during cardiogenic shock due to acute left ventricular (LV) failure, including during LV unloading with Impella CP and an added moderate dose of norepinephrine.
METHODS: Cardiogenic shock was induced by injecting microspheres in the left main coronary artery in 18 adult Danish Landrace pigs. Conductance catheters were placed in both ventricles and pressure-volume loops were recorded simultaneously.
RESULTS: Cardiogenic shock due to LV failure also impaired RV performance, which was partially restored during haemod

BACKGROUND: Isovolumic acceleration (IVA) is a new tissue Doppler parameter in the assessment of systolic function of both left and right ventricles. It remains unaffected with the changes in pre- and after-load within the physiological range. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of mitral stenosis degree, which is determined by echocardiography, on the left ventricular (LV) function using IVA.
METHODS: A total number of 62 patients with mitral stenosis (MS) and 32 healthy controls were examined. The severity of MS (mild, moderate, and severe) was determined on the basis of mitral va

Cardiac neurotransmission imaging with SPECT and PET allows in vivo assessment of presynaptic reuptake and neurotransmitter storage as well as of regional distribution and activity of postsynaptic receptors. In this way, the biochemical processes that occur during neurotransmission can be investigated in vivo at a micromolar level using radiolabeled neurotransmitters and receptor ligands. SPECT and PET of cardiac neurotransmission characterize myocardial neuronal function in primary cardioneuropathies, in which the heart has no significant structural abnormality, and in secondary cardioneuropa

BACKGROUND: Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is a significant risk factor for myocardial infarction (MI), adversely affecting left ventricular (LV) structure and function and worsening clinical outcomes. Given the interaction between ventricles, the right heart may also be affected by MI. This study investigated the additional effects of HTG on right ventricular (RV) deformation in patients with acute MI.
METHODS: The study included 101 patients with MI [58 without HTG (HTG-) and 43 with HTG (HTG+)] and 83 control participants, all of whom underwent cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The patients

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular (RV) function is closely associated with prognosis in isolated tricuspid regurgitation. Beyond conventional longitudinal indexes, nonlongitudinal RV deformation may provide additional prognostic information.
OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to evaluate whether 3-dimensional (3D) RV circumferential strain (RV-CS) provides incremental prognostic value in patients undergoing isolated tricuspid valve surgery (ITVS).
METHODS: Patients scheduled for ITVS were prospectively enrolled and underwent 3D echocardiography 1 day before surgery. 3D RV longitudinal strain, CS, and

Background/Objectives: Alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is a major preventable cause of non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), yet its specific cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) remains incompletely defined. We aimed to characterize the CMR features of ACM, focusing on late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) subpatterns and biventricular function and to compare them with idiopathic DCM. Methods: In total, 148 consecutive patients (ACM n = 20, idiopathic DCM n = 128) referred for CMR at a single center were retrospectively analyzed. Sequential logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, left ventricu

Increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation is important for the development of right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy (RVH) and failure (RVF) during pulmonary hypertension (PH). ROS molecules are produced in different compartments within the cell, with mitochondria known to produce the strongest ROS signal. Among ROS-forming mitochondrial proteins, outer-mitochondrial-membrane-located monoamine oxidases (MAOs, type A or B) are capable of degrading neurotransmitters, thereby producing large amounts of ROS. In mice, MAO-B is the dominant isoform, which is present in almost all c

After the arterial switch operation (ASO) for transposition of the great arteries (TGA), many patients have an impaired exercise tolerance. Exercise tolerance is determined with cardiopulmonary exercise testing by peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). Unlike VO2peak, the oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) does not require a maximal effort for interpretation. The value of OUES has not been assessed in a large group of patients after ASO. The purpose of this study was to determine OUES and VO2peak, evaluate its interrelationship and assess whether exercise tolerance is related to ventricular function

OBJECTIVE: To describe cardiac function, cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO(2)), and cerebral blood flow (CBF) that correspond to changes in arterial oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) in normal term neonates immediately after birth and after the transition.
STUDY DESIGN: In this prospective observational study, cardiac function and cerebral hemodynamics were assessed by echocardiography and Doppler ultrasonography 3 times during the first 20 minutes after vaginal delivery, then again at 24-48 hours after delivery. Cerebral rSO(2) (by near-infrared spectroscopy) and preductal SaO(2) (by pulse o

BACKGROUND: The arterial switch operation (ASO) is the standard repair for complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA), but long-term data across large contemporary cohorts remain limited. In this study we evaluated 30-year survival, reintervention, and structural sequelae after ASO and identified factors that influenced late outcomes.
METHODS: A total of 1125 patients, 652 with TGA with intact ventricular septum, 389 with TGA with ventricular septal defect, and 84 with double-outlet right ventricle with Taussig-Bing anomaly who underwent ASO between 1990 and 2015 at 10 tertiary centre

OBJECTIVES: Clinically, tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) patients who underwent repair late (older than 2 years) appears to have worse outcomes after pulmonary valve replacement than patients who underwent repair early. We proceeded to review the clinical features of late-repaired TOF patients who required pulmonary valve replacement.
METHODS: Fifty patients who underwent pulmonary valve replacement after TOF repair over the age of 2 years from 2000 to 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Pre- and postoperative cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, cardiopulmonary exercise tests, and cardiac catheteriz

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of babies born in India are low birth weight (LBW) and about 70% of LBW babies are small for gestational age (SGA). Though there are several trials that have evaluated cardiac function of intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) babies in utero, there is limited data about postnatal cardiac function in SGA babies during early neonatal period. This study was conducted to evaluate the cardiac functions of SGA babies by serial echocardiographic measurements and compare this with appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies during the early postnatal period.
