A new colourimetric method is described for the quantification of diquat using a yellow-coloured derivative produced by heating diquat in alkaline solution at 80 degrees C. The absorption maximum of the yellow derivative is 420 nm and the molar absorption coefficient is 2.76 x 10(4) (0.15 in 1 microgram diquat/ml with 1 cm light path). The absorption at 420 nm shows a linear concentration dependence in the range 0.1-10 micrograms/ml and fading of the colour is about 5% after 1 h. This article will focus on the role of the colon in the pathogenesis of diarrhea in carbohydrate malabsorption or physiologically incomplete absorption of carbohydrates, and on the most common manifestation of carbohydrate malabsorption, lactose malabsorption. In addition, incomplete fructose absorption, the role of carbohydrate malabsorption in other malabsorptive diseases, and congenital defects that lead to malabsorption will be covered. In 6 cases of oxycephaly, isotope (RIHSA) cisternography showed an altered CSF circulation with ventricular reflux or cisternal block and accumulation of the contrast at lumbosacral level. These changes express increased absorption of the CSF by the spinal arachnoid villi to compensate for reduced or nonexistent absorption by the subarachnoid villi of the vault, obstructed by chronic intracranial hypertension secondary to craniosynostosis. The possible clinical implications are outlined.

A screening test for infectious mononucleosis is described, based on the fact that antibodies against sheep red cells remaining after absorption of the serum by papain-treated sheep red cells appear to be specific for the disease. The test appears to be more useful in diagnosis than classical absorption techniques and has the advantage of being specific while maintaining a high degree of sensitivity.

A bacterium isolated from microbial mats located on a polynesian atoll produced a high molecular weight (3,000 kDa) and highly sulphated exopolysaccharide. Previous studies showed that the chemical structure of this EPS consisted of neutral sugars, uronic acids, and high proportions of acetate and sulphate groups.
