The influence of sleep complaints on the association between chronotype and negative emotionality in young adults.

A great body of research indicates that eveningness is associated with negative psychological outcomes, including depressive and anxiety symptoms, behavioral dyscontrol and different health impairing behaviors. Impaired subjective sleep quality, increased circadian misalignment and daytime sleepiness were also reported in evening-type individuals in comparison with morning-types. Although sleep problems were consistently reported to be associated with poor psychological functioning, the effects of sleep disruption on the relationship between eveningness preference and negative emotionality hav

Association of Social and Behavioral Risk Factors With Mortality Among US Veterans With COVID-19.

IMPORTANCE: The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers programs that reduce barriers to care for veterans and those with housing instability, poverty, and substance use disorder. In this setting, however, the role that social and behavioral risk factors play in COVID-19 outcomes is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether social and behavioral risk factors were associated with mortality among US veterans with COVID-19 and whether this association might be modified by race/ethnicity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study obtained data from the VA Corporate Data Warehouse t

Association of Primary Care Consultation Patterns With Early Signs and Symptoms of Psychosis.

IMPORTANCE: Primary care is an important part of the care pathway for patients with psychosis; therefore, primary care physicians need to be able to accurately identify those at clinical high risk of psychosis. The difficulty of this task is increased because clinical high-risk symptoms are frequently nonspecific to psychosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the consultation patterns for a prespecified set of symptoms can be used to identify primary care patients who later developed a psychotic illness. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nested case-control study used primary care consu

Sexuality and Neurodegenerative Disease: An Unmet Challenge for Patients, Caregivers, and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Many factors affect sexuality in the elderly such as dementia which is a common cause of inappropriate sexual behaviors. These behavioral disturbances are distressing, disruptive, and impair the care of the patient. SUMMARY: The onset of dementia does not erase sexuality. Sexual expression can be an important aspect of well-being for older adults with dementia. This study gives a general overview about the relationship between sexuality and cognitive impairment. It starts with a general discussion of sexual aspects in the elderly. This is followed by research studies in this field

Treatment of Tourette syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS) consists of chronic motor and phonic tics and characteristically begins in childhood. The tics can be disabling and commonly associated behavioral comorbities such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), can also cause problems in daily functioning. The underlying etiology and neurobiology of TS remain unknown although genetic factors appear to be important, cortical control of basal ganglia motor function appears to be disturbed and neurochemical abnormalities, particularly involving dopamine neurotransmission, are l

Study of radial die-wall pressure during high speed tableting: effect of formulation variables.

With high-speed compaction cycles as applied in pharmaceutical industrial presses, robust tools like radial die-wall pressure (RDWP) are required to monitor the deformation behavior of formulations under pressure and to avoid common problems such as capping. In this study, the effects of common formulation factors such as lubricant, binder, and drug loading on RDW were investigated. Compaction simulation using Presster™ was applied for five pharmaceutical fillers with different compaction behaviors. Two lubricants, two binders and paracetamol as a model drug were used. Residual die-wall (RDP)

Attachment disorganization and controlling behavior in middle childhood: maternal and child precursors and correlates.

Main, Kaplan, and Cassidy's (1985) conceptualizations of disorganization in infancy and controlling behavior in preschool forged new directions in attachment research. However, there currently is no valid coding system for behavioral manifestations of attachment after 7 years of age. The present study presents the validity of an instrument for coding both disorganized and role-reversed behavior from ages 7 to 9; the Middle Childhood Disorganization and Control (MCDC) scales. In the present study, 43 mother-child dyads at socio-economic risk, followed from infancy, were assessed on the MCDC at

Why Should I? Examining How Childhood Callous-Unemotional Traits Relate to Prosocial and Affiliative Behaviors and Motivations.

Childhood callous-unemotional (CU) traits are characterized by low empathy, limited prosocial behavior, and restricted social affiliation. However, few studies have investigated whether CU traits are associated with different subtypes of prosocial and affiliative behavior or the specific motivational difficulties underlying these behaviors. We addressed these questions using data from 135 young children (M = 5.48 years old; 58% female) who viewed depictions of adults or children in instrumental need, emotional need, or neutral situations. We assessed recognition, suggested initiation of, and m

Urinary neurotransmitter analysis and canine behavior assessment.

Behavioral problems are highly prevalent in domestic dogs, negatively affecting the quality of life of dogs and their owners. In humans and dogs, neuropsychological or neurobehavioral disorders can be associated with deviations in various neurotransmitter systems. Previous evidence has revealed correlations between urinary neurotransmitters and various behavioral disorders; however, a causal relationship has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. Non-invasive urinary neurotransmitter analysis may identify specific biomarkers, which enable a more differentiated assessment of canine behavioral

Healthy Behaviors Among Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic People Affected by Cancer During the Posttreatment Survivorship: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: There are disparities in health behaviors across racial and ethnic groups. However, limited studies focus on cancer survivors' experiences developing and maintaining healthy behaviors, particularly in non-Hispanic Black (NHB) and Hispanic people. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the experiences of NHB and Hispanic people affected by cancer in developing and maintaining positive health behaviors beyond a cancer diagnosis. METHODS: The data were collected in a mixed-method study through semistructured interviews with 29 NHB and Hispanic cancer survivors between June and Oc

Towards defining restlessness in individuals with dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Most individuals with dementia develop significant behavioral problems. Restlessness is a behavioral symptom frequently endorsed by caregivers as distressing, yet is variably defined and measured. Lack of conceptual and operational clarity hinders an understanding of this common behavioral type, its prevalence, and development of effective interventions. We advance a systematic definition and understanding of restlessness from which to enhance reporting and intervention development. METHOD: We reviewed the literature for existing definitions and measures of restlessness, identifie

Heterogeneity in externalizing problems at age 3: Association with age 15 biological and environmental outcomes.

Investigating heterogeneity in antisocial behavior early in life is essential for understanding the etiology, development, prognosis, and treatment of these problems. Data from the longitudinal National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) study of Early Child Care were used to identify homogeneous groups of young antisocial children differentiated on externalizing problems, internalizing problems, and callous-unemotional (CU) traits using latent profile analysis (LPA). We examined how identified subgroups were differentiated on adolescent social, biological, cognitive, and enviro

"Gender aware therapy" for professional men in a day treatment center.

High accountability men in the medical, legal, corporate, and mental health professions sometimes engage in behavior that violates their fiduciary responsibilities. These highly skilled men may engage in disruptive or explosive behavior, cross sexual boundaries with clients or patients, abuse substances, or have other psychiatric problems that compromise their workplace performance. When this occurs, licensing boards, professional societies, or supervising executives often require the dysregulated man to seek assistance. This article reports on ways the Professional Renewal Center incorporates

The elderly safety imperative and antipsychotic usage.

Behavioral and psychotic symptoms are common problems in older adults, and as the population ages, understanding the benefits and risks of antipsychotic usage is increasingly important. In this age group, psychotic symptoms may occur in patients with dementia or as part of schizophrenia, mood disorders, delirium, or delusional disorder. Various antipsychotics have been studied in older adults with psychotic symptoms, demonstrating mixed, but real, benefit, especially in relation to carefully selected patients. Caution is required because of the potential side effects and risks, which include i

Understanding the behavioral and emotional consequences of child abuse.

Children who have suffered early abuse or neglect may later present with significant behavior problems including emotional instability, depression, and a tendency to be aggressive or violent with others. Troublesome behaviors may persist long after the abusive or neglectful environment has changed or the child has been in foster care placement. Neurobiological research has shown that early abuse results in an altered physiological response to stressful stimuli, a response that deleteriously affects the child's subsequent socialization. Pediatricians can assist caregivers by helping them recogn

Changes in physiological arousal to gambling cues among participants in motivationally enhanced cognitive-behavior therapy for pathological gambling: a preliminary study.

Despite somewhat high attrition and relapse rates, cognitive-behavioral interventions for pathological gambling seem promising. As a possible remedy to these problems, we conducted a preliminary study of gambling-specific cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) with the addition of motivational enhancement techniques (MET) for the treatment of pathological gamblers. Data on psychophysiological arousal upon exposure to imagined gambling vignettes were collected at both pre- and posttreatment. Results indicate that participants showed decreases in degree of arousal during the vignettes from pre- to pos

The labyrinth of IDEA: school decisions on referred students with subaverage general intelligence.

A sample of 150 children referred to Student Study Teams was assessed with a psychometric battery. Behavioral and academic ratings were obtained from teachers. Forty-three children scored at or below 75 on the WISC-III. We examined schools' subsequent classification decisions to ascertain how schools dealt with low-IQ students with academic and behavioral problems. Schools reached decisions regarding 35 of the children: Only 6 were classified as having mental retardation, and 18, as having learning disabilities. Findings were discussed in terms of (a) decline in identification rates of mild me

Social, psychological and physical consequences of pathological gambling in Sweden.

Social, psychological and physical consequences of pathological gambling reported by 42 pathological gamblers recruited mainly by advertising were compared with data on 63 pathological gamblers identified by case-finding within districts of probation, in- and out-patient psychiatric care and social welfare authorities. The two studies gave similar results. Financial breakdown, impaired relations with family and friends, and psychological problems occurred in about 50% of the pathological gamblers. Physical consequences were perceived to be of minor significance. Gambling became a solitary beha

Identification of children at risk at the police station and the prevention of delinquency.

In 1978 the World Health Organization suggested that the efficient use of health resources in a global context means paying special attention to those in greatest need. The aim of community health services should be, among other activities, to identify those "at risk" as early as possible in their lives and to intervene directly to reduce that risk (Skuse 1987). In the area of behavioral development, problems are frequently reported: In the Netherlands about 26% of all children appear to have some difficulties with behavioral development (Verhulst 1985). Set in the context of the WHO recommend
