Enhanced laboratory-based surveillance of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157 in The Netherlands.

The aim of this study was to analyse the results of a programme in the Netherlands for enhanced surveillance of Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157. In this programme, implemented in January 1999, all laboratories report positive cases to the public health services and submit isolates for typing to the reference laboratory. Public health services collect clinical and risk factor information of patients, using a standardised questionnaire. Results were analysed for the first two and a half years of the programme. In February 2000, a questionnaire was sent to all laboratories to a

Evaluation of treatment-related serological changes in Treponema pallidum subsp. endemicum infection using latex-based immunoassays, with comparison to Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum.

BACKGROUND: Treponema pallidum subsp. endemicum (TEN), the causative agent of bejel, is a nonvenereal treponematosis that occurs mainly in arid regions such as Africa and the Middle East. Recently, sexually transmitted TEN infections have been reported outside endemic regions, but their serological characteristics and treatment responses remain unclear. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We analyzed 6 genetically confirmed bejel patients and 9 syphilis patients in Japan. Serum treponemal (TP) and non-treponemal (RPR) antibody titers were quantified at baseline and post-treatment using latex aggl

An ATP-Mediated Antibiotic β-Peptide Nanofiber That Kills Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria via a Multistage Mechanism.

Artificial bioinspired supramolecular assemblies hold great potential to alter modern medicine. Organic tissue-like nanomaterials built from foldamer peptidomimetics and natural biomolecules could expand our boundaries toward new biocompounds that are able to address global health challenges. Related, antimicrobial resistance against conventional antibiotics motivates search for new compounds with orthogonal mechanisms. Here we designed an antibacterial system where natural adenosine phosphates (APs) trigger supramolecular co-assemblies from a lipopolysaccharide-targeting (LPS) antimicrobial β

Genetic analysis of virulence, extended spectrum beta lactamase, and carbapenem resistance in Escherichia coli O157:H7 isolates from drinking water and wastewater in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Escherichia coli O157 H7, a Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic strain, poses serious health risks and has increasingly acquired multidrug resistance (MDR) through extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbapenemases. This study investigated the molecular characteristics of E. coli O157:H7 isolated from drinking and surface wastewater in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 205 water samples (97 drinking and 108 wastewater) were collected from Addis Ketema and Akaki/Kality sub-cities between May and July 2023. Isolation was performed using membrane filtration and confirmed by latex agglu

A newly developed temperature-sensitive Mycoplasma synoviae live attenuated strain prevents pathological lesions of the respiratory and reproductive tracts in chickens caused by a wild-type M. synoviae strain.

A field isolate of Mycoplasma synoviae, designated D14-383, caused pathogenic lesions in the air sac, trachea, lung, and ovary and induced a decline or stop in egg production and eggshell apex abnormalities in chickens after intratracheal inoculation. A live M. synoviae vaccine candidate was developed after in vitro passaging at 32°C from a wild-type M. synoviae strain originally isolated from the trachea of a 5-month-old asymptomatic layer chicken. In this study, the vaccine efficacy of the attenuated vaccine candidate strain against M. synoviae infection caused by the D14-383 strain was inve

Toxoplasma gondii in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Egypt: a comparative seroepidemiological study in Upper and Lower Egypt.

Toxoplasmosis remains a prevalent parasitic zoonosis worldwide, raising public health concerns. The global information available regarding the role of camels in the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii is still limited. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of T. gondii in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) from northern and southern Egypt. A total of 513 serum samples were obtained from camels across Cairo (Lower Egypt) and Aswan (Upper Egypt) governorates. The Modified Agglutination Test (MAT) was performed to screen for anti-T. gondii antibodies. The overall seroprevalence was 13.8

Toxoplasmosis landscape: a systematic review and meta-analysis of seroprevalence in healthy and non-healthy individuals in Sudan (1990-2025).

BACKGROUND: Human toxoplasmosis is a widespread zoonotic infection with significant public health implications, particularly in Sudan, where the disease burden is high. However, the overall prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in the country remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the pooled seroprevalence of human toxoplasmosis in Sudan and identify associated risk factors. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in English and Arabic databases for studies published before February 28, 2025, following PRISMA guidelines. The meta-analysis include

Toxoplasma gondii in owned and stray dogs from a Northwestern region of São Paulo State, Brazil: Seroprevalence and geospatial distribution from a One Health perspective.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a coccidian parasite capable of infecting all warm-blooded animals, including humans. While most infections are asymptomatic, severe manifestations can occur in immunocompromised individuals and during pregnancy. In dogs, T. gondii infection is not only of clinical significance but also of considerable epidemiological importance, given their close contact with humans and their potential role as sentinels for environmental contamination. METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were collected from owned and stray dogs at the Zoonosis Control Center in São José do Rio

Unilateral Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in a Young Adult With Latent Syphilis.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a significant retinal vascular disease that commonly affects the elderly. Given its rarity among the younger population, its presence should alert clinicians to the possibility of a serious systemic disease. We highlight a rare case of CRVO in a young adult with latent syphilis. Our patient is a 24-year-old male who presented with acute, right eye painless blurring of vision for one day. His right and left visual acuity (VA) were hand movement and 6/6, respectively. Relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) was negative. Right fundus examination reveale

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in severe leptospirosis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a clinico-radiological entity with diverse aetiologies. It presents with headache, altered sensorium, seizures, and visual disturbances and is characterised by symmetrical white matter changes on neuroimaging. An acute rise in the blood pressure is the commonest cause of PRES. We report a patient who developed PRES in the recovery phase of severe leptospirosis. We discuss the interplay of possible patho-mechanisms of PRES in leptospirosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old Sri Lankan male presented with a 5-day history of hig

Seroprevalence and Molecular Epidemiology of Leptospira spp. Infecting Dogs in the Yangtze River Region of China.

Leptospirosis, a globally re-emerging zoonosis caused by pathogenic Leptospira species, poses escalating public health challenges in rapidly urbanizing regions. Canines, as significant reservoir hosts, are increasingly regarded as effective sentinels for human leptospirosis risk. This study assessed the seroprevalence of pathogenic Leptospira in dogs across multiple provinces and regions along the Yangtze River in China. From 2021 to 2023, a total of 1517 canine serum samples were collected from Shanghai, Jiangsu, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Chongqing, Sichuan, and Yunnan. In addition, a tis

Evaluation of protective efficacy, serological responses, and cytokine modulation induced by polyvalent Leptospira vaccines in hamsters.

Whole-cell inactivated vaccines (bacterins) are the only licensed vaccines available for leptospirosis prevention and control, especially in domestic and farm animals. However, despite their widespread use, inconsistencies in their efficacy have been reported. Because immunity induced by bacterins is mainly mediated by antibodies against leptospiral lipopolysaccharides, the involvement of cellular responses is not well-known. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and characterize the humoral and cellular immune responses induced by whole-cell inactivated leptospirosis bacterin

Case report: Brucellosis with rare multiple pulmonary nodules in a depressed patient.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease that threatens public health and creates an economic burden. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked in developing countries, with misdiagnosis causing negative impacts on those with low income. Although the symptoms of brucellosis are commonly reported as fever and fatigue, rare pulmonary, and psychiatric involvements should also be considered. We present the first brucellosis patient in China with multiple pulmonary nodules and depression. Furthermore, this report highlights the importance of collecting patient history in epidemic areas of brucello
