OBJECTIVES: Clients of female sex workers (FSWs) are an important target group for human immunodeficiency virus/sexually transmitted infection (HIV/STI) prevention. This study aimed to estimate their HIV and other STI prevalence, examine their risk behaviors, and evaluate their role as a bridge population in the spread of HIV/STIs.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed among 553 clients recruited in commercial sex sites in the province of Escuintla, Guatemala. They were interviewed and tested for HIV and other STIs.
RESULTS: Half of the clients who were approached refused participat

BACKGROUND: Women in sex work stand to benefit if the contraceptive diaphragm alone or combined with a microbicide proves to be an effective barrier method against HIV and sexually transmissible infection (STI). Currently, contraceptive diaphragm users are advised to leave the diaphragm in situ without concomitant use of other intravaginal substances for at least 6 h after intercourse.
METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews on sexual behaviour including post-coital intravaginal practices with 36 women in sex work and 26 of their clients and held two focus-group discussions, each with 10 wo

OBJECTIVE: With the current increase in sexually transmitted infections in industrialized countries, we assessed the characteristics and plasma viral load of HIV-1-infected patients reporting sexual behaviour at risk for HIV transmission (SBR).
DESIGN: The study population consisted of 223 patients with primary HIV-1 infection who were enrolled in the French PRIMO cohort between 1996 and 2001 and who had at least 3 months of follow-up. Patients were interviewed on condom use at each visit according to the partner (gender, steady versus casual nature, and HIV serostatus). SBR was defined as un

College students are engaging in high rates of behavior related to risk of infection from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A cognitive-behavioral skills training program for heterosexual college females focused on sexual assertiveness skills and the reduction of risk-related behaviors was designed and evaluated compared with an education-only program. Participants completed pre-intervention, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up assessments of: (a) HIV/STD-related knowledge and beliefs; (b) sexual, alcohol, and drug-related behaviors; and

To compare the sexual behaviour and HIV risk reduction strategies of gay and bisexual men in Europe, a survey, disseminated via the gay press and gay associations, was conducted amongst gay and bisexual men in Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Italy and the Netherlands during the autumn and winter of 1991. By end March of 1992, 12,347 completed questionnaires had been obtained. A preliminary analysis shows striking similarities in patterns of sexual behaviour of gay men in the 8 European countries but indicates that strategies of risk management concerning HIV and

Female sexual partners of injection drug users are at risk for AIDS because of their association with street drug cultures and all their concomitant risks, including their own non-injecting drug use. This study examines a model of the social determinants of HIV-associated sexual risk behaviors. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the data for 207 female sexual partners who had never injected drugs. The findings show that crack cocaine use is the strongest contributor to the model, which explains fourteen percent of the variance of sexual risk behavior. The findings suggest

OBJECTIVES: Women are a growing prison population in Canada, yet there is a lack of systematic data collection on the reproductive health of people incarcerated in prisons for women. The objective of this study was to describe a wide range of reproductive, gynecological, and breast health histories, including access to preventive services, among people incarcerated in a provincial prison for women in British Columbia.
STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey design was used to meet study objectives.
METHODS: We adapted a survey instrument previously administered in four provincial prisons in A

BACKGROUND: Creative crowdsourcing may be an effective means to mitigate higher-risk sexual behaviors among college students in China. We conducted an 8-month Randomized Controlled Trial evaluating a crowdsourced health promotion and text-messaging intervention among first-year college students in Eastern China.
METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to four arms: Active Creative Crowdsourcing Engagement (ACCE) arm that created messages promoting sexual health (n = 129); Text-Messaging Intervention (TMI) arm that received health promotion messages bi-weekly (n = 111); ACCE-TMI arm that

BACKGROUND: Contraception is the voluntary prevention of pregnancy by interrupting the chain of events that lead to conception despite the act of unprotected coitus. It plays a key role in preventing unwanted pregnancies, reducing maternal and child mortality, and improving the lives of women and children in general. To improve demand for contraception, it is essential to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of contraceptive use among women in a targeted area.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice of the use of contraceptives among women attending the outpatient d

Despite Rwanda's progress in HIV prevention for key populations, female employees in alcohol-serving establishments (ASEs) remain underserved, with interventions often lacking attention to the contextual factors shaping their HIV risk and service uptake. Guided by the Exploration phase of the Exploration, Preparation, Intervention, and Sustainment (EPIS) framework, a qualitative study was conducted to identify contextual factors affecting HIV prevention uptake among young single mothers working in informal ASEs. In-depth interviews were conducted with 101 participants recruited through maximum

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) pose a major public health challenge globally, with Nigeria experiencing a significant burden. Despite on-going sexual health interventions, the determinants of STI risk across diverse Nigerian populations remain insufficiently understood. This systematic review synthesizes current evidence to inform policy and intervention strategies. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and AJOL used Boolean operators and STI-related keywords. Eligible peer-reviewed studies, conducted in Nigeria between 2014 and 2023, examined S

Alkyl nitrites, commonly referred to by the slang term "poppers," are widely used in sexual contexts among sexual minority men. Despite longstanding regulatory ambiguity in the United States, few contemporary studies have examined poppers use alongside sexual health behaviors and HIV prevention engagement. This study analyzed survey data from the Men's Body Project, an online survey of sexual minority men in the United States. Analyses were restricted to participants who completed poppers-related items (n = 441). Logistic regression models examined associations between past-year poppers use du

Reproductive tract infections (RTI) are associated with adverse outcomes in pregnant African women. However, many diagnostic strategies are unaffordable or perform poorly. Here, we assess RTI prevalence and predictors of chlamydia/gonorrhea (CT/NG) in pregnant women reporting vaginal discharge and the performance of our previously published CT/NG risk algorithm in this population versus Rwandan National Guidelines (RNG). From 2017-2020, free sexually transmitted infections (STI) services were provided to residents in Kigali, Rwanda. Medical history and gynecologic examination were done. Labora

BACKGROUND: Perceptions of chlamydia and gonorrhoea may influence sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and prevention. Understanding these perceptions is essential, as many countries are considering more restrictive chlamydia testing. This study compared perceived susceptibility and severity of chlamydia and gonorrhoea among young heterosexuals in the Netherlands and explored underlying determinants and reasons.
METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey (April-June 2024) among young people (16-34 year-old) was distributed via social media and sexual health clinics. Multivariable logis

Introduction: Neurogenic bladder disorders after spinal cord injury (SCI) are often problematic with urinary incontinence (UI) and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) contributing to patient morbidity. Our study objective was to provide a current snapshot of the frequency of UI and UTIs in the SCI population while also quantifying their association with hospitalization. Methods: The National Spinal Cord Injury Database (2016-2021) was accessed for persons within five years of injury. The self-reported frequency of UI in the last month (none, daily, weekly, monthly), the number of UTIs re
