Neuropsychological and Criminological Features of Female Homicide Offenders.

Few studies have examined life history and cognitive characteristics unique to female homicide offenders. Understanding these characteristics could aid in risk assessment for extreme violence in this group of offenders. The current study utilized t-tests or chi-square tests to compare 27 female and 81 male homicide offenders on psychiatric, neurologic, criminal, and cognitive characteristics. Additionally, we explored the role of abuse history in female offenders through Kruskal-Wallis or Fisher's exact tests. Results indicate that in comparison with male counterparts, females are more likely

Positive urgency predicts illegal drug use and risky sexual behavior.

There are several different personality traits that dispose individuals to engage in rash action. One such trait is positive urgency: the tendency to act rashly when experiencing extremely positive affect. This trait may be relevant for college student risky behavior, because it appears that a great deal of college student risky behavior is undertaken during periods of intensely positive mood states. To test this possibility, the authors conducted a longitudinal study designed to predict increases in risky sexual behavior and illegal drug use over the course of the first year of college (n=407

Impact of ambiguity and risk on decision making in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Decisions under ambiguity and decisions under risk are crucial types of decision making in daily living at any age. This is the first study assessing these two types of decisions in patients with mild dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) by means of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and a newly developed, Probability-Associated Gambling (PAG) task. While rules for gains and losses are implicit in the IGT, in the PAG task rules are explicit and winning probabilities, which change from trial to trial, can be estimated. Results of the IGT indicated that DAT patients made more disadvantageous decisions t

Theta oscillations during the processing of monetary loss and gain: a perspective on gender and impulsivity.

Event-related oscillations (EROs) have proved to be very useful in the understanding of a variety of neurocognitive processes including reward/outcome processing. In the present study, theta power (4.0-7.0 Hz) following outcome stimuli in the time window of the N2-P3 complex (200-500 ms) was analyzed in healthy normals (20 males and 20 females) while performing a gambling task that involved monetary loss and gain. The main aim was to analyze outcome processing in terms of event-related theta power in the context of valence, amount, gender, and impulsivity. The S-transform was used for the sign

Impulse control and aggressive response generation as predictors of aggressive behaviour in children with mild intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence.

BACKGROUND: A growing interest exists in mechanisms involved in behaviour problems in children with mild intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence (MID/BI). Social problem solving difficulties have been found to be an explanatory mechanism for aggressive behaviour in these children. However, recently a discrepancy was found between automatic and reflective responding in social situations. We hypothesise that low impulse control and aggressive social problem solving strategies together may explain mechanisms involved in aggressive behaviour by children with MID/BI. METHOD: In a cli

[Psychiatric disorders after early brain damage in children and adolescents - four case reports].

Neuropsychological assessment is an important diagnostic tool that can provide additional information for diagnosing mental disorders during childhood and adolescence. While in the past, the challenge of a neuropsychological assessment was to detect whether or not the child had suffered brain damage, this aim changed with the development of better, non-invasive brain-imaging techniques. On the basis of four single cases it is demonstrated that brain damage causes not only direct, but also indirect deficits. In particular, the indirect consequences of early brain lesions, such as behavioral dis

Methylphenidate-induced impulsivity: pharmacological antagonism by beta-adrenoreceptor blockade.

Noradrenaline-dopamine interactions mediate increases in locomotor activity, development of sensitisation and subjective effects of psychostimulant drugs. However, the modulatory effects of noradrenaline on psychostimulant-induced impulsivity are less clear. This article examined the relative roles of noradrenaline and dopamine in the modulation of methylphenidate-induced impulsive responding in rats performing the 5-choice serial reaction time task. Experiment 1 examined the systemic antagonism of methylphenidate-induced impulsivity with either propranolol, a beta-adrenoreceptor blocker, or p

Impulsivity and chronic stress are associated with amphetamine-induced striatal dopamine release.

A challenging question that continues to plague the field of addiction is why some individuals are more vulnerable for substance use disorders than others. Several important risk factors for substance abuse have been identified in clinical studies, including trait impulsivity and environmental stress. However, the neurobiological mechanisms that underlie the relationships remain poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine associations among impulsivity, stress, and striatal dopamine (DA) responses to amphetamine (AMPH) in humans. Forty healthy M, F adults, ages 18-29 years, com

Cue-induced brain activity in pathological gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have identified differential brain activity in healthy subjects performing gambling tasks and in pathological gambling (PG) subjects when exposed to motivational and emotional predecessors for gambling as well as during gambling or response inhibition tasks. The goal of the present study was to determine if PG subjects exhibit differential brain activity when exposed to visual gambling cues. METHODS: Ten male DSM-IV-TR PG subjects and 10 matched healthy control subjects underwent fMRI during visual presentations o

[A clinical study of suicidal behavior in schizophrenic patients].

117 subjects admitted to the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at Sapporo City General Hospital due to suicide attempts between June 1983 and August 1986 were studied. Various aspects of attempted suicide and successful suicide in patients with schizophrenia were compared with those same aspects in patients with other psychiatric conditions. Similarly, 30 patients with schizophrenia who attempted suicide between January 1975 and December 1989 while inpatients or discharged outpatients in the Department of Neuro-Psychiatry at Sapporo City General Hospital were also examined. 1)

Reward deficiency syndrome: genetic aspects of behavioral disorders.

The dopaminergic and opioidergic reward pathways of the brain are critical for survival since they provide the pleasure drives for eating, love and reproduction; these are called 'natural rewards' and involve the release of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens and frontal lobes. However, the same release of dopamine and production of sensations of pleasure can be produced by 'unnatural rewards' such as alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, nicotine, marijuana, and other drugs, and by compulsive activities such as gambling, eating, and sex, and by risk taking behaviors. Since only a minority

Ineffective Homeschooling in a Child with a Learning Disability.

Charles is a 10-year-old African-American male who presents to the Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic for evaluation of his learning. His primary care provider (PCP) was concerned that his developmental delays were negatively affecting his ability to engage in his homeschooling curriculum and also that his mother seemed unaware of the severity of his delays. Neuropsychological evaluation had been recommended by the PCP several times in the past, but the family declined. At one point, the PCP had considered potential child protective services (CPS) referral for medical neglect because o

Once-daily atomoxetine treatment for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, including an assessment of evening and morning behavior: a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Atomoxetine seems to be as effective for treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when the daily dose is administered once in the morning as when the dose is divided and administered in the morning and evening. In the present study, the efficacy of atomoxetine administered once daily among children with ADHD was assessed throughout the day, including the evening and early morning. Another goal was to determine how early in treatment it was possible to discern a specific effect of the drug on ADHD symptoms. METHODS: This study was a randomized, multicenter, double-b

The soft bipolar spectrum redefined: focus on the cyclothymic, anxious-sensitive, impulse-dyscontrol, and binge-eating connection in bipolar II and related conditions.

The bipolar II spectrum represents the most common phenotype of bipolarity. Numerous studies indicate that in clinical settings this soft spectrum might be as common--if not more common than--major depressive disorders. The proportion of depressive patients who can be classified as bipolar II further increases if the 4-day threshold for hypomania proposed by the DSM-IV is reconsidered. The modal duration of hypomanic episodes is 2 days; highly recurrent brief hypomania is as short as 1 day, and when complicated by major depression, it should be classified as a variant of bipolar II. Another va

Could the telescoping effect and comorbidity with substance use disorders account for sex differences in the processes and therapeutic outcomes? A latent-class moderation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sex differences in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment outcomes remain unclear; protocols focused on male prevalence may overlook female-specific needs. This study tested interactions among sex, the telescoping effect, and comorbid profiles in outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective multisite electronic health record study (N = 4818) of patients with co-occurring disorders. Interaction regressions and latent class analysis tested sex moderation of links between years of substance use (telescoping) and outcomes within SUD and co-occurring diagnostic groups. RESULTS: Slower progression

Behavioral phenotypes associated with cannabis and alcohol substitution.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol and cannabis co-use is the most common form of polysubstance use in the U.S. Some evidence suggests that there is an association between cannabis use and reduced alcohol consumption, however data on this topic are mixed. Further research is needed to elucidate the individual factors that determine whether cannabis substitutes for alcohol. METHOD: This study is an exploratory analysis of data from a within-subjects, crossover laboratory study on alcohol and cannabis co-administration. Participants completed two sessions: one in which they self-administered alcohol after usin

Ideational and conceptual apraxia by cerebral infarction in the left basal ganglia and right pons: a case report.

We report a rare and uncommon case of ideational apraxia (IA) and conceptual apraxia (CA) in a 70-year-old woman after concurrent cerebral infarctions of the left basal ganglia (BG) extending to the corona radiata and the right pons. The patient abruptly developed difficulty operating devices such as the car's gear shift and smartphone. The brain MRI on admission disclosed infarction in the area involving the left BG and right pons. During rehabilitation therapy, she exhibited features of IA and CA, including sequencing failures when using technological devices and a profound loss of functiona

Factors associated with subjective cognitive complaints in former American football players.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) can precede cognitive decline and are associated with demographic, exposure, lifestyle, and psychological factors. Prevalences of SCC and their correlates in individuals with repetitive head impacts (RHI) are poorly understood. This study characterized SCC in former elite American football players by frequency, mood and behavioral correlates, concordance with informant reports, and associations with neuropsychological test performance, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) markers of neurodegeneration. METHOD: Former A
