Based on previously published reports on fractures of the distal radius and on the analysis of 400 fresh fractures treated in two accident hospitals affiliated with our university hospital, we propose a new classification as shown in Table 2. This new classification includes a type of combined Chauffeur-Barton fracture which has never been described before. Each type of fracture of the distal radius requires a specific treatment as shown in Fig. 1.

Clinical criteria for the classification of patients with hip pain associated with osteoarthritis (OA) were developed through a multicenter study. Data from 201 patients who had experienced hip pain for most days of the prior month were analyzed. The comparison group of patients had other causes of hip pain, such as rheumatoid arthritis or spondylarthropathy. The trigeminal neuralgia has to be differentiated from the trigeminal neuropathy in respect of pain character and etiology. The neuralgia is characterized by paroxysmal pain evoked by trigger stimuli. The most frequent cause of this type of pain is a parapontine vascular compression of the trigeminal root without neurological deficits. Two hundred and seventy-eight surgically treated postburn metacarpophalangeal joint extension contractures in children were reviewed. A classification system based on the limitation of passive metacarpophalangeal flexion was devised to direct surgical intervention and assess postoperative results. Of the various types of hand fractures, metacarpal fractures occur quite frequently, predominantly in younger people. In order to maintaining hand function man's most important tool, the treatment of coice in recent years has shifted from predominantly conservative measures to more surgical procedures. From 1980 to 1988, 33 patients with metacarpal fractures were treated: 66% received surgical and 34% conservative treatment. We report on the results as regards hand function, the length of unemployment, the patient's subjective complaints and the peri- and postoperative complications.

The reliability of Evans' classification of trochanteric femoral fractures was examined using kappa (Kappa) statistics. Radiographs of 50 randomly chosen trochanteric fractures were evaluated by six observers. One set of radiographs was uniformly classified as a subtrochanteric fracture by all observers and was excluded from further analysis. Only 18 per cent of the fractures were classified identical by all observers and 57 per cent when differentiating between stable and unstable fractures. The corresponding kappa values showed moderate agreement ranging from 0.38 to 0.68.

Five children with atlanto-axial rotatory fixation (AARF) in association with fractures of the clavicle are described. It is postulated that the rotary fixation is a direct result of the trauma which produces the fracture. The importance of early diagnosis is stressed, since delayed diagnosis may lead to chronic deformity. Congenital iris ectropion has recently been added to the spectrum of neural-crest-derived anterior segment dysgenesis syndromes. This paper describes the fracture patterns in 20 patients with flexion-distraction injuries. A mechanism of injury is described that includes an explanation of the presence of wedge compression fractures and burst injuries. A classification is developed based on trauma to the anterior vertebral column, the posterior elements, and the resulting axially loaded spine.

A highly varied collection of nonsteroids have been reported over the last forty years as being able to exert an antihormonal action versus steroid hormones in vivo. In a retrospective study of 96 patients with a myelodysplastic syndrome, the reproducibility of the French-American-British (FAB) classification was determined. Morphological abnormalities in peripheral blood and bone marrow were studied. Slides were reviewed by 3 examiners. Despite the high incidence of cystic kidney diseases, affected families are not usually well informed of the inheritance of these disorders. Genetic counselling must be based on precise diagnostic criteria. Detailed information on the different types of cystic kidney disease is summarized, including clinical features, pathology, radiology, prenatal diagnosis and the risk of recurrence. In addition, a genetic interpretation is given of the Caroli syndrome, Potter sequence as well as congenital hepatic fibrosis.
