OBJECTIVE: Intraarticular osteoid osteoma is uncommon and presents diagnostic difficulties, which are important for both rheumatologists and orthopedic surgeons. Clinical symptoms, imaging procedures, differential diagnostic problems, and treatment results of intraarticular as compared with extraarticular osteoma are analyzed in this retrospective study.
METHODS: Nineteen patients with intraarticular osteoid osteomas (Group A), with a mean followup period of 34 months, are compared with 15 others with extraarticular lesions (Group B).
RESULTS: Nine intraarticular tumors were located in the h

OBJECTIVES: The long-term prognosis of injuries to the distal physis of forearm bones, including complications such as radioulnar length discrepancy and styloid nonunion, has not been extensively studied. Reliable radiographic prognostic criteria to predict physeal disturbance at trauma are also lacking. The aim of this study is to investigate both issues.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: University hospital.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One hundred sixty-three lesions to the distal physis of the forearm bones in 157 patients were available for a long-term follow-up. Seventy-seven injuries o

DDH, septic coxarthritis and slipped capital epiphysis should be diagnosed as soon as possible. Hip sonography is the goal of DDH examination technique, anatomical identification and 3 landmarks check up are there most important points of the method. With the progress of ossification and loss of the 3 landmarks consecutively, x-rays become increasingly important. Septic coxarthritis is an orthopaedic emergency case, sonography is the most important tool in primary diagnosis. Slipped capital epiphysis requires an x-ray in 2 planes, MRI oder CT scans respectively makes sense in special cases to

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is rare in the younger child. Polyarticular involvement in this condition, regardless of patient age, is distinctly uncommon. The authors describe a case of pigmented villonodular synovitis involving multiple joints in a young boy who also had congenital anomalies of the genitourinary tract. Although rare, pigmented villonodular synovitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of multiple joint swellings in children with congenital anomalies.

UNLABELLED: In the last 20 years 49 children with gross posttraumatic elbow deformities have been treated in our hospital: 19 patients with an overlooked radial head dislocation, 12 children with a radial condyle deformity and 19 patients with a severe radial head deformity.
SECONDARY TREATMENT: In the majority of cases secondary surgical procedures led to unsatisfying results. Only 4 patients with a pseudarthrosis of the radial condyle were treated secondarily. Surgical fixation led to good functional results but was not able to remove the joint deformity. Overlooked radial head dislocations

The Sauvé-Kapandji procedure has been performed in 15 non-rheumatoid patients with chronic distal radio-ulnar joint dislocation accompanied by joint damage or deformity. The clinical results were favourable; wrist pain improved in all patients, wrist flexion-extension was increased by more than 10 degrees in nine patients, grip strength of at least 80% of the contralateral wrist was achieved in 11 patients, and forearm rotation was more than 150 degrees in 12 patients. However, X-ray examination revealed an unstable proximal ulnar stump and radio-ulnar convergence in all patients similar to th

This retrospective study, based on a chart and radiographic review of blacks treated for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), showed a 93.2% incidence of excellent or good results, and an incidence of only 2.3% of major complications with poor results. Blacks can generally be expected to have a good result after treatment of SCFE in both males and females with a low incidence of avascular necrosis (AVN) or acute cartilage necrosis (ACN).

Twenty-eight fractures of the neck of the femur occurred in children between 1963 and 1982 were treated and followed up at the Pediatric Surgical Hospital of the University of Mainz. Three children had transepiphyseal fractures (type I), eight children transcervical fractures (typ II), six children cervicobasal fractures (typ III), and eleven children pertrochanteric fractures (typ IV). Surgical intervention was performed in fifteen children, and thirteen children were submitted to conservative treatment. The results were evaluated according to a new system considering troubles, mobility, and

Nine pediatric patients presented with synovitis and suspected Legg-Perthes disease, hemarthrosis, acute slipped capital femoral epiphysis, prolonged traumatic hip dislocation, or transcervical femoral fracture. All had hip scintigraphs that showed loss of Tc-99m diphosphonate uptake in the affected femoral head. Radiographic changes associated with aseptic necrosis failed to appear during the initial follow-up period of three to 14 months. Repeat scintigraphy showed complete revascularization in six cases and partial revascularization in two. Reambulation at 1.5 to eight months after presenta

Fractures in children heal more quickly than in adults. Stiffness of joints hardly ever occurs in children, even after prolonged immobilization. Pseudoarthrosis and Sudeck's atrophy are extremely rare. Axial, lateral and longitudinal malpositioning can be largely compensated by increased growth. Only rotation malpositions remain permanent in children. By and large, the treatment of fractures in childhood is therefore still conservative. Operative treatment is recommended for some types of fractures near joints, for fractures of the neck of the femur, and for some types of the fractures around

BACKGROUND: Femoral head avascular necrosis (AVN) is a devastating complication that can occur in the setting of trauma to the pediatric hip. Bone scintigraphy (BoS) can be used to evaluate femoral head perfusion, but current evidence in support of its use in the pediatric population is lacking. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of BoS to diagnose femoral head AVN in children.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent BoS to assess femoral head perfusion following treatment of traumatic femoral neck fracture, hip dislocation, or SCFE a

INTRODUCTION: Patients with hip arthritis due to Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) pose altered femoral anatomy, making hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) technically complicated. We examined implant survival and clinical symptoms in patients with a history of LCP or SCPE who underwent HRA for end-stage osteoarthritis.
METHODS: Data was collected for patients who underwent HRA for osteoarthritis due to LCP (n = 59) or SCFE (n = 32). Harris Hip Scores (HHS), UCLA activity scores, and radiographs were evaluated pre and postoperatively. Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Te

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a relatively uncommon hip disorder in adolescents and its prevalence in Malaysia has not been studied. This retrospective study is undertaken to provide an overview of a 12-year review of SCFE treated in our institution. Fourteen patients (19 hips) with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) admitted to Hospital UKM from 1990 to 2002 were reviewed with respect to demographic profile, functional outcome according to the Iowa Hip Score, and complications. There were ten boys (average age, 12.5 years) and four girls (average age, 12 years). Eight were

We reviewed 61 hips in 50 children (33 boys and 17 girls) with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), all treated by in situ pinning. Average age of our patients was 11.8 years (range, from 8 to 15 years). The average clinical and radiographic follow-up was 7.4 years. By studying the changes in physeal-shalt angle on radiographs in Lauenstein (frog) position, we found evidence of physeal remodeling in three (8%) of 38 mild and seven (30%) of 23 moderate slips. Remodeling of the proximal femoral metaphysis occurred in 92% of hips with a head-shaft angle less than 30 degrees and in 52% of hip

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been applied to the study of a variety of hip disorders, principally the evaluation of avascular necrosis. The authors reviewed their experience with MR imaging of a variety of pediatric and adult hip diseases. Attention to the details of the imaging technique is essential for maximizing the diagnostic potential of MR imaging in the work-up of hip disease. Specific protocols that incorporate surface coil imaging, oblique imaging planes, and alternative pulse sequences are the foundation of successful hip studies. Gradient-echo imaging is essential for evalua
