Does multi-fetal pregnancy reduction adversely influence intra-uterine growth?

Multi-fetal pregnancy reduction (MFPR) is offered in the management of higher-order multiple gestations to reduce the risks associated with such pregnancies. Pregnancy outcomes, including birthweight, following MFPR have been examined with variable findings. However, little attention has been paid to in utero growth in such pregnancies. This study examines whether the intra-uterine growth performance of a twin pregnancy resulting from MFPR differs from that of an unreduced twin pregnancy. This was a retrospective analysis comparing the intrauterine growth of 20 higher order multiple pregnancie

[Folates and fetal programming: role of epigenetics and epigenomics].

Folates are needed for synthesis of methionine, the precursor of S-adenosyl methionine (SAM). They play therefore a key role in nutrition and epigenomics by fluxing monocarbons towards synthesis or methylation of DNA and RNA, and methylation of gene transregulators, respectively. The deficiency produces intrauterine growth retardation and birth dejects. Folate deficiency deregulates epigenomic mechanisms related to fetal programming through decreased cellular availability of SAM. Epigenetic mechanisms of folate deficiency are illustrated by inheritance of coat colour of agouti mice model and a

Individual predictions based on nonlinear mixed modeling: application to prenatal twin growth.

The assessment of growth during fetal life and childhood commonly relies upon cross'sectional reference ranges or centiles. However, individual sequential predictions may help the timewise assessment of a growth process. In twin pregnancies for example, which are at risk of growth restriction, such predictions may improve the detection of abnormal trajectories. In this article, we present a simple forecasting method, assuming that a given normal individual behaves in the same way as a reference population. We consider, as a prediction in a given individual, the forecast of a future observation

Chemotherapy during pregnancy: pharmacokinetics and impact on foetal neurological development.

Based on an estimated incidence of cancer during pregnancy of 1 per 1000-1500 pregnancies, annualy 3000-5000 new patients can be expected in Europe. The treatment of cancer in pregnant women is a challenge since both the maternal and the foetal well-being need to be considered. This study was initiated to gain better insights into the problems associated with cancer and chemotherapy during pregnancy. A multicentric registration study was set up to evaluate the currently applied treatment modalities for cancer during pregnancy, and the consequences of their use for the pregnancy. Secondly, a pr

Role of tissue factor in feto-maternal development: a xiphos.

In this review, the dual role of tissue factor (TF) in pregnancy is described. On the one hand, TF is required for embryonic and placental development in a successful pregnancy, and on the other hand, pathologic expression of TF can lead to serious pregnancy complications in humans and mice. Human studies show increased TF levels in plasma, amniotic fluid and and/or placentas of abnormal pregnancies affected by miscarriages, preterm birth, or pre-eclampsia. Interestingly, using two mouse models, we found that blood-borne TF plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of pregnancy complications. T

Cervical vertebrae, cranial base, and mandibular retrognathia in human triploid fetuses.

On profile radiographs of adults, an association between fusions of cervical vertebrae, deviations in the cranial base and mandibular retrognathia has been documented radiographically. An elaboration of this association on a histological level is needed. In human triploid fetuses severe mandibular retrognathia and deviations in the cranial base have previously been described radiographically (without cephalometry) and cervical column fusions radiographically as well as histologically. Therefore, triploid fetuses were chosen to elucidate the cranial base cephalomterically and histologically. In

Arginine metabolism and nutrition in growth, health and disease.

L-Arginine (Arg) is synthesised from glutamine, glutamate, and proline via the intestinal-renal axis in humans and most other mammals (including pigs, sheep and rats). Arg degradation occurs via multiple pathways that are initiated by arginase, nitric-oxide synthase, Arg:glycine amidinotransferase, and Arg decarboxylase. These pathways produce nitric oxide, polyamines, proline, glutamate, creatine, and agmatine with each having enormous biological importance. Arg is also required for the detoxification of ammonia, which is an extremely toxic substance for the central nervous system. There is c

Genetic defects in copper metabolism.

Genetic defects in copper metabolism highlight the delicate balance mammalian systems have developed to maintain normal copper homeostasis. Menkes disease, the mottled mouse, the Atox-1-deficient mouse and the ctr1 knockout mouse reveal the importance of adequate copper intake during embryogenesis and early development, especially in the central nervous system. The toxicity associated with excess copper as manifest in Wilson disease, the toxic milk mouse, the LEC rat and copper toxicosis in the Bedlington terrier demonstrate the profound cellular susceptibility to copper overload, in particula

The development of the gubernaculum and inguinal closure in the marsupial Macropus eugenii.

This study reports the developmental anatomy of testicular descent and inguinal closure of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) from birth to maturity. In females the ovary migrated caudally between days 10 and 20 after birth. The gubernaculum differentiates into the round ligament in the abdomen and extra-abdominally as the ilio-marsupialis muscle of the mammary glands. In males the testes migrated to the internal inguinal ring by day 20 post partum (pp), coinciding with the enlargement of the gubernaculum, and from the internal inguinal ring to the scrotum between days 20 and 65 pp. During

Ovine fetal growth curves in twin pregnancy: ultrasonographic assessment.

PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION: The fetal-lamb model is a fundamental tool for developing clinical applications for the treatment of human fetal pathology (e.g., open fetal surgery). Accurate estimation of gestational age is important to avoid size-related problems during surgery. METHODS: To evaluate the effect of twinning on ovine fetal growth, we followed seven twin pregnancies in Comiso ewes from mating through parturition. Fetal growth indexes (muzzle-occipital and mean abdominal diameters, abdominal circumference, femoral and humeral length) were measured weekly using perimammary ultrasonogra

Growth of the fetal lens and orbit.

OBJECTIVES: To present normal lens and orbital measurement ranges by gestational age. METHODS: Three hundred and thirty-five women with uneventful pregnancies were evaluated from the 15th to the 40th week of gestation. Lens and orbital measurements were added to routine biometric measurements for normal fetuses. RESULTS: A strong linear correlation was observed between gestational age (GA) and lens diameter (R(2)=0.89; P<0.0001), circumference (R(2)=0.89; P<0.0001), and surface (R(2)=0.90; P<0.0001). A linear correlation was also found between GA and orbital diameter (R(2)=0.92; P<0.0001), c

The effects of neonatal stress on brain development: implications for psychopathology.

Recent studies have focused on the behavioral and neurobiological sequella of exposure to early adverse events. We hypothesize that early adverse experiences result in an increased sensitivity to the effects of stress later in life and render an individual vulnerable to stress-related psychiatric disorders. This vulnerability may be mediated by persistent changes in corticotropin-releasing-factor (CRF)-containing neurons, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and the sympathetic nervous system. We therefore present an overview of the CRF system and its role as a mediator in the development

Cataract mutations and lens development.

The lens plays an essential role for proper eye development. Mouse mutants affecting lens development are excellent models for corresponding human disorders. Moreover, using mutations in particular genes the process of eye and lens development can be dissected into distinct steps. Therefore, three mouse mutants will be described in detail and discussed affecting three essential stages: formation of the lens vesicle, initiation of secondary lens fiber cell formation, and terminal differentiation of the secondary fiber cells. The mutant aphakia (ak) has been characterized by bilaterally apakic e
