Long-term results in 217 patients with carcinoma of the cardia were analysed prospectively. 43 of the 217 could not be operated upon, either because of their poor general condition (51%), distal metastases (49%), and (or) the primary tumour having advanced too far locally (9%). To assess our clinical experience with this method of enteral feeding, we conducted a retrospective study and follow-up of 73 patients having percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). In addition, we conducted a telephone survey of 42 persons who cared for the PEG tube. The most common indication was neurologic impairment of deglutition. Early and late complications occurred in 12% and 33% of cases, respectively, and were usually minor. Our 30-day survival was 74%. In a prospective open study 21 patients with upper abdominal complaints and chronic active gastritis as well as endoscopically proven erosions were treated with bismuth subsalicylate (4 X 30 ml/day, corresponding to 4 X 314 mg Bi3+) for three weeks. Forty-eight normal men participated in a 14-day, single blind, single center, multiple dose study of gastric irritation using endoscopy. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 4 treatment groups after a one week lead-in period, as follows: etodolac 200 mg BID, 400 mg BID, 600 mg BID, or aspirin 975 mg QID. Etodolac at all dose levels produced significantly (p less than or equal to 0.0001) less gastrointestinal irritation than aspirin as assessed by endoscopic examination of the gastric and duodenal sites. There were no significant differences among the 3 etodolac groups.

In a double-blind study the influence of Pirenzepin on ulcer healing was studied in 28 in-patients with gastric ulcer under endoscopic control. The ulcer size was reduced by Pirenzepin significantly quicker, and the number of ulcers healed after three weeks treatment with Pirenzepin was significantly higher than under placebo. As to accompanying symptoms appetite stimulation was significantly more frequent with Pirenzepin compared to placebo. No patient complained of dryness of the mouth.
