An 87-year-old man presented with extracranial vertebral artery (VA) occlusion and progressive vertebrobasilar ischemia despite maximal medical management. Cerebral angiography showed left proximal VA occlusion, termination of the right VA at the ipsilateral posterior inferior cerebellar artery, and hypoplastic bilateral posterior communicating arteries. Although the stump of the left VA ostium was not visualized, the distal patent artery was reconstituted via muscular branches from the left subclavian artery (SCA). Endovascular angioplasty with a stent for left VA occlusion was performed. The

Grisel's syndrome is known as a very rare complication of ENT surgery. It is described as non-traumatic atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation, often seen after tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy in children. Therapy is staged according to the Fielding classification. We report the case of a 9-year-old female patient with Grisel's syndrome after otoplasty. The diagnosis was confirmed by CT scan. Manual reposition was performed under general anaesthesia, followed by temporary immobilization with a Minerva orthesis.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal schwannomas are rare tumours accounting for 0.07-0.36% of all intracranial tumours and 0.8-8% of intracranial schwannomas. Symptoms and signs of these lesions depend on the site of the tumour, which may compress the nerve of origin or adjacent nerves.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 69-year-old woman with a history of progressively worsening hypoesthesia involving the third division of the trigeminal nerve. A tumour of 5-cm diameter was revealed within the right cranial middle fossa, extending to the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus, the infratemporal fossa and

Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enables imaging of the entire arterial tree non-invasively. Optimal technical considerations for performing MDCT angiography (MDCTA) are essential for accurate diagnosis and atherosclerotic disease stratification. This review article focuses on the various technical aspects necessary for peripheral computed tomographic angiography (CTA) acquisition. Common clinical indications for peripheral MDCTA and the latest scan protocols are described. The essential issue of radiation dose reduction is discussed, along with methods of optimal contrast bolus detect

Diffuse esophageal leiomyomatosis is a rare benign tumor, which can be associated with leiomyoma in female genital tracts involving the uterus, vagina, and vulva. Alport syndrome, an inherited disorder that includes the kidneys, eyes, and sensorineural hearing loss, is also rarely associated with these multiple leiomyomatosis. In our case, (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography was used to distinguish esophageal and genital leiomyomatosis from malignant masses.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, is a progressive optic neuropathy with characteristic structural changes in the optic nerve head and concomitant visual field defects. Ocular hypertension (i.e. elevated intraocular pressure without glaucoma) is the most important risk factor to develop glaucoma. Even though a number of variables, including various optic disc and visual field parameters, have been used in order to identify early glaucomatous damage, there is a need for computer-based methods that can detect early glaucomatous progression so that treatment to prevent further pro

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal aortic vascular anomalies are relatively common causes of extrinsic central airway narrowing in infants with respiratory symptoms. Surgical correction of mediastinal aortic vascular anomalies alone might not adequately treat airway symptoms if extrinsic narrowing is accompanied by intrinsic tracheomalacia (TM), a condition that escapes detection on routine end-inspiratory imaging. Paired inspiratory-expiratory multidetector CT (MDCT) has the potential to facilitate early diagnosis and timely management of TM in symptomatic infants with mediastinal aortic vascular anomal

In this short report, we describe a small series of adult patients with chronic appendicitis presenting with chronic right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The clinical presentation was unusual and atypical for classic appendicitis because of the absence of fever, peritoneal tenderness on focused graded compression of the abdomen, and leukocytosis. Computed tomography (CT) findings included the presence of an appendicolith and appendiceal thickening, without mesenteric infiltration, abscess, or collection. In this series, the appendicolith appeared to represent a marker rather than an actual cau

PURPOSE: To determine whether pretreatment CT can predict local control of T2 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx treated with radiation therapy alone.
METHODS: Pretreatment CT studies were retrospectively evaluated by two head and neck radiologists in 28 patients with T2 squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic larynx treated with definitive radiation therapy. All patients were followed for a minimum of 2 years. A tumor score was calculated based on the CT findings of tumor involvement of the following areas: the anterior commissure, the contralateral true vocal cord, the arytenoid f

The constant increase in the use of hip arthroplasty and the continuous search for the best possible adaptation of the implant to femoral anatomy have led to the development of methods of radiographic analysis that are increasingly precise and reliable. Among these the methods that include the use of traditional radiograms-despite their limits-deserve a place of importance. In fact, these methods offer the advantage of being easy to apply and of allowing for a comparison to be made with pre-existing files. Computer science is useful in this field, in particular, computerized analysis, both mor

BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive, balloon-assisted reduction and cement-augmented internal fixation of the tibial plateau is an innovative surgical procedure for tibial plateau fractures. The close proximity of balloons and cement to the knee joint poses a potential risk for osteonecrosis; especially in the case of thin bone lamellae. However, there are no studies about the vitality of the cement-surrounding tissue after these tibioplasties. Therefore, our goal was to assess the osseous vitality after cement-augmented balloon tibioplasty using single photon emission computed tomography/compu

Currently, radiologists must interpret large quantities of images and identify diseases on a daily basis. The minimization of errors is crucial for high-quality diagnostic imaging and optimal patient care. Brain imaging is frequently used in clinical practice; however, radiologists are prone to overlook some regions in brain imaging and make perceptual errors, thus leading to missed diagnoses. These regions, also known as "blind spots", comprise a number of intricate areas, including the posterior fossa, cerebral sulci and pia mater, cranial nerves (CNs), intracranial arteries, dural sinuses,

Analyzing and interpreting cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images is a complicated and often time-consuming process. In this study, we present two different architectures of multi-channel deep learning (DL) models: "Ensemble" and "Synchronized multi-channel", to automatically identify and classify skeletal malocclusions from 3D CBCT craniofacial images. These multi-channel models combine three individual single-channel base models using a voting scheme and a two-step learning process, respectively, to simultaneously extract and learn a visual representation from three different directiona
