Dietary Nutrient Intake in School-Aged Children With Heavy Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is an important factor that affects brain development. Nutritional deficiencies can exacerbate alcohol's damaging effects. Conversely, nutritional supplementation can serve a protective role against alcohol damage and may prove to be a worthwhile intervention strategy. This study investigated dietary intake in school-aged children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure to understand their nutritional status, compared to a national sample of typically developing children and Dietary Reference Intakes. METHODS: Dietary intake data were collected from children with confirmed

Changes in serum calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels in captive ruminants affected by diet manipulation.

A combination of low serum calcium (Ca), high serum phosphorus (P), and low serum magnesium (Mg) has been observed in individual captive ruminants, primarily affecting kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), eland (Taurotragus oryx), nyala (Tragelaphus angasii), bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus), and giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis). These mineral abnormalities have been associated with chronic laminitis, acute tetany, seizures, and death. Underlying rumen disease secondary to feeding highly fermentable carbohydrates was suspected to be contributing to the mineral deficiencies, and diet changes that decr

Abnormalities of serum electrolyte concentrations in dogs with hypoadrenocorticism.

BACKGROUND: The sensitivity and specificity of the sodium to potassium ratio (Na:K ratio) as a cutoff for recommendation of an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test in dogs suspected of having hypoadrenocorticism (HA) is unknown. Additionally, abnormalities in plasma ionized calcium (iCa2+) and ionized magnesium (iMg2+) concentrations and venous pH of dogs with HA are incompletely documented. OBJECTIVES: To define the sensitivity and specificity of the Na:K ratio as a diagnostic aid for HA in dogs and to examine for associations between venous pH and the Na:K ratio, iCa2+ concen

Clotting parameters and thromboelastography in children with neuromuscular and idiopathic scoliosis undergoing posterior spinal fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: An unblinded comparison of laboratory values between patients with idiopathic and neuromuscular scoliosis. OBJECTIVES: To compare standard tests of coagulation and thromboelastography (TEG) parameters between two groups of patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Children with neuromuscular scoliosis such as cerebral palsy have more intraoperative blood loss than children with idiopathic scoliosis during PSF. Various reasons suggested for this include nutritional deficiencies, altered tissue integrity, hepatic dysfunction, and use of antiep

Different pathways of uptake and degradation of sphingomyelin by lymphoblastoid cells and the potential participation of the neutral sphingomyelinase.

The metabolism of sphingomyelin (SPM) was investigated in Epstein-Barr virus-transformed lymphoid cell lines from normal individuals and from patients with Niemann-Pick disease Type A (deficient in the acid, lysosomal sphingomyelinase) and familial hypercholesterolemia (lacking the low density lipoprotein receptor). Cells were incubated with the following radioactive or fluorescent SPMs: [choline-methyl-14C] SPM, [oleoyl-3H]SPM, pyrene-propenoyl-SPM (P3:1-SPM), pyrene-butanoyl-SPM (P4-SPM), pyrene-dodecanoyl-SPM (P12-SPM), and pyrene-sulfonylamino-undecanoyl-SPM (PSA11-SPM). Several pathways o

Pseudohypoparathyroidism presenting with rickets.

Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is a condition characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and an impaired phosphaturic response to exogenous parathormone (PTH). A minority of patients with PHP have associated bone disease, and in some the radiological appearances have been suggestive of rickets. We report a patient with PHP who had epiphyseal enlargement and bowing of the long bones similar to that seen in rickets. Radiology showed generalized osteomalacia with failure of epiphyseal calcification and several pseudofractures. Bone biopsy showed increased osteoid seams. The phalanges of bo

[Vitamin D metabolite and calcium phosphorus metabolism in in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism on the background of bolus therapy with colecalciferol].

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(ОН)D]) deficiency (<20 ng/mL) and insufficiency (20-29 ng/mL) are common in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), but data regarding the vitamin D metabolism in this population is limited. AIM: The aim of this study is to estimate the vitamin D metabolites and their relationship with the main parameters of phosphorus-calcium metabolism in patients with PHPT at baseline and on the background of a single dose of cholecalciferol 150,000 IU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center interventional, dynamic, prospective, comparative study has been carr

Development of multi-electrode array screening for anticonvulsants in acute rat brain slices.

The acute hippocampal brain slice preparation is an important in vitro screening tool for potential anticonvulsants. Application of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) or removal of external Mg(2+) ions induces epileptiform bursting in slices which is analogous to electrical brain activity seen in status epilepticus states. We have developed these epileptiform models for use with multi-electrode arrays (MEAs), allowing recording across the hippocampal slice surface from 59 points. We present validation of this novel approach and analyses using two anticonvulsants, felbamate and phenobarbital, the effects o

Vitamin K2, a gamma-carboxylating factor of gla-proteins, normalizes the bone crystal nucleation impaired by Mg-insufficiency.

It has been reported that the Mg-insufficient bone is fragile upon mechanical loading, despite its high bone mineral density, while vitamin K2 (MK-4: menatetrenone) improved the mechanical strength of Mg-insufficient bone. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the ultrastructural properties of bone in rats with dietary Mg insufficiency with and without MK-4 supplementation. Morphological examinations including histochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction were conducted on the femora and tibiae of 4-week-old Wistar male rats fed with 1)

Chemical and pathological oxidative influences on band 3 protein anion-exchanger.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The erythrocyte is a cell exposed to a high level of oxygen pressure and to oxidative chemical agents. This stress involves SH-groups oxidation, cell shrinkage by activation of K-Cl co-transport (KCC) and elevation of the band 3 tyrosine phosphorylation level. The aim of our study was to test whether oxidative stress could influence band 3-mediated anion transport in human red blood cells. METHODS: To evaluate this hypothesis, normal and pathological (glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) defficient) erythrocytes were treated with known sulphydryl-blocking or thiol-oxidiz

Acquired long QT syndrome and monomorphic ventricular tachycardia after alternative treatment with cesium chloride for brain cancer.

Individuals searching for symptomatic relief or a potential cure are increasingly seeking and using nontraditional therapies for their various diseases. Little is known about the potential adverse effects that patients may encounter while undergoing these alternative treatments. Cesium chloride is an unregulated agent that has been reported to have antineoplastic properties. Cesium chloride is advertised as an alternative agent for many different types of cancers and can be purchased easily on the Internet. Recently, QT prolongation and polymorphic ventricular tachycardia were reported in seve

Magnesium transport in the renal distal convoluted tubule.

The distal tubule reabsorbs approximately 10% of the filtered Mg(2+), but this is 70-80% of that delivered from the loop of Henle. Because there is little Mg(2+) reabsorption beyond the distal tubule, this segment plays an important role in determining the final urinary excretion. The distal convoluted segment (DCT) is characterized by a negative luminal voltage and high intercellular resistance so that Mg(2+) reabsorption is transcellular and active. This review discusses recent evidence for selective and sensitive control of Mg(2+) transport in the DCT and emphasizes the importance of this c

Gestational diabetes and its impact on the neonate.

Gestational diabetes mellitus is a relatively common medical condition that was described as early as the nineteenth century. This article discusses the maternal and fetal pathophysiology and the impact of the maternal condition on the neonate. Fetal macrosomia and infant respiratory distress syndrome, cardiomyopathy, hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, polycythemia, and hyperviscosity all can occur as a result of maternal hyperglycemia and are discussed in detail. Therapeutic approaches and treatment options for the mother, manifestations and diagnosis of the infant, and current resea

Epidemiological study of magnesium status and risk of coronary artery disease in elderly rural and urban populations of north India.

Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in 20 randomly selected streets in Moradabad city and two villages in Moradabad district in North India to determine the association of magnesium with risk of coronary artery disease (CAD). There were 501 rural (270 men and 231 women) and 505 urban (250 men and 255 women) subjects between 50-54 years of age inclusive. The overall prevalence of CAD was three times higher in urban than in rural subjects (11.7 vs. 3.98) and the rates were comparable in both sexes. Dietary intake of magnesium was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in rural subjects in both men (

[Parenteral feeding. Prevention of complications in adults during exclusive mid-term parenteral feeding].

The benefits of parenteral feeding need no longer be emphasised. However, qualitative and quantitative food supplements raise a certain number of difficulties which should be better known. Infection is the most frequent complication. It may be avoided by strict aseptic precautions throughout parenteral feeding. Hypoglycemia is a major risk owing to the possible consequence. Hyperglycemia and its consequence of osmotic polyuria is more frequent and should be controlled to avoid loss of water and salt. Complications due to the use of lipid emulsions are exceptional when soya oil is used. Hypopho

Deficiency of the second component of complement associated with anaphylactoid purpura and presence of mycoplasma in the serum.

A patient, with deficiency of the second component of complement (C2), who has had anaphylactoid purpura for 12 years is described. Other classical complement components were present normally and the very markedly low total haemolytic complement activity was restored by the addition of functionally purified C2. Glycine-rich β-glycoprotein (GBG), measured antigenically, was reduced to about 50% of normal but the alternate pathway to complement activation was normal as judged by the platelet factor three activation test. Structures identified morphologically as mycoplasma were present in the pat

Biochemical markers of nutritional status and childhood malaria severity in Cameroon.

To investigate the part played by undernutrition in malaria severity, some biomarkers of nutritional status were assessed in children with severe malarial anaemia (MA) and cerebral malaria (CM) in comparison with healthy children or those with uncomplicated malaria. Undernutrition was assessed using the weight-for-age Z score (WAZ). Retinol was determined by HPLC; lipid profile, Ca, Mg and albumin were determined by spectrophotometry. Severe and moderate undernutritions were more prevalent in children with MA and those with the combined symptoms of CM and MA, but not in those with CM alone. So
