Socio-environmental assessment of Aedes aegypti distribution and risk of chikungunya in vulnerable community.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, poses a major public health challenge in tropical regions. In Brazil, its incidence has increased, especially in socioeconomically vulnerable areas, where environmental conditions favor the proliferation of vectors. Our objective was to assess the socioeconomic and environmental vulnerabilities associated with the spatial distribution of a) Ae. aegypti and b) resident exposure to CHIKV in a low-income community. Identifying key exposure hotspots, our work improves our understanding of CHIKV transmission in informal settlements and fac

Influence of community norms on caregivers' early care-seeking behaviour for under-5 children with fever in Guinea, a secondary analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains the leading cause of morbidity in Guinea. Early diagnosis of malaria infections and prompt administration of appropriate treatment are two essential elements in reducing severe morbidity and mortality associated with malaria infection. This study aims to identify how community norms can shape caretakers' care-seeking behavior for fever in children under five in Guinea. METHODS: This study uses data from the 2021 Guinea malaria and anemia indicators survey to analyze the factors associated with mothers' access to care for children under five with fever in Guinea. Dengue virus exploits autophagy vesicles and secretory pathways to promote transmission by human dendritic cells.

Dengue virus (DENV), transmitted by infected mosquitoes, is a major public health concern, with approximately half the world's population at risk for infection. Recent decades have increasing incidence of dengue-associated disease alongside growing frequency of outbreaks. Although promising progress has been made in anti-DENV immunizations, post-infection treatment remains limited to non-specific supportive treatments. Development of antiviral therapeutics is thus required to limit DENV dissemination in humans and to help control the severity of outbreaks. Dendritic cells (DCs) are amongst the

Plasmodium malariae contributes to high levels of malaria transmission in a forest-savannah transition area in Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Malaria control efforts are highly skewed towards Plasmodium falciparum while overlooking other Plasmodium species such as P. malariae. A better understanding of the role of Plasmodium species other than P. falciparum is needed to strengthen malaria elimination initiatives. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the contribution of P. malariae to malaria transmission in Cameroon. METHODS: The study was conducted in the Ngatti Health District, a forest-savannah transition area in the Adamawa Region, Cameroon. A total of 497 individuals aged from 1 to 85 years were diagnosed

[Investigation of West Nile virus seroprevalence in Hacettepe University Hospital blood donors and confirmation of the positive results by plaque reduction neutralization test].

West Nile virus (WNV), a member of Flaviviridae family, is an enveloped, icosahedral, single-stranded positive-sense RNA virus. WNV is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoe (especially Culex spp.) bites and cause a variety of clinical outcomes, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe meningoencephalitis. The aims of this study were to determine and confirm the WNV seroprevalence in a chosen healthy population and to provide epidemiological data for Turkey about the recent status of the infection at our region. A total of 1200 serum samples collected from blood donors (400 were fema

[The state of vector-borne diseases in Indonesia].

From epidemiological point of view, Indonesia is an extremely interesting area owing its insular structure and ecological, anthropological, cultural and economical diversity. As everywhere, vector-borne diseases are the result of complex and variable epidemiological systems, subject both to biogeographical rules and human activity. Two main arboviroses are present in Indonesia: dengue and Japanese encephalitis. Dengue appears as an endemoepidemic disease and is mostly circumscribed to urban areas. Haemorrhagic cases were first observed in 1968; since then, the incidence has been constantly inc

Randomised community-based trial of annual single-dose diethylcarbamazine with or without ivermectin against Wuchereria bancrofti infection in human beings and mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: WHO has targeted lymphatic filariasis for elimination. Studies of vector-parasite relations of Wuchereria bancrofti suggest that a reduction in the microfilarial reservoir by mass chemotherapy may interrupt transmission and thereby eliminate infection. However, no field data exist on the impact of chemotherapy alone on vector efficiency and transmission intensity of W bancrofti. We compared the impact of an annual community-wide single-dose treatment with diethylcarbamazine alone or with ivermectin on rate and intensity of microfilaraemia, and transmission intensity in an area of P

Expanded characterization and localization of male seminal fluid proteins within the female reproductive tract of the dengue vector mosquito Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit numerous viruses that impact human health. Contemporary biological control programs aim to reduce Aedes fertility despite our limited understanding of interactions between the sexes required for reproduction. During mating, males transfer seminal fluid proteins (SFPs) to females which alter their post-mating behavior, physiology and gene regulation, but the contribution of individual SFPs to fertility remains uncharacterized. In Drosophila, a small subset of SFPs localize to the sperm storage organs and oviducts or enter the hemolymph which suggests their part

Specialized cis-Acting RNA Elements Balance Genome Cyclization to Ensure Efficient Replication of Yellow Fever Virus.

Genome cyclization is essential for viral RNA (vRNA) replication of the vertebrate-infecting flaviviruses, and yet its regulatory mechanisms are not fully understood. Yellow fever virus (YFV) is a notorious pathogenic flavivirus. Here, we demonstrated that a group of cis-acting RNA elements in YFV balance genome cyclization to govern efficient vRNA replication. It was shown that the downstream of the 5'-cyclization sequence hairpin (DCS-HP) is conserved in the YFV clade and is important for efficient YFV propagation. By using two different replicon systems, we found that the function of the DC

Epidemiology of West Nile Virus in the Eastern Mediterranean region: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: West Nile Virus (WNV), a member of the genus Flavivirus, is one of the most widely distributed arboviruses in the world. Despite some evidence for circulation of WNV in countries summarized by the World Health Organization as the Eastern Mediterrian Regional Office (EMRO), comprehensive knowledge about its epidemiology remains largely unknown. This study aims to provide a concise review of the published literature on WNV infections in the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of WHO (EMRO). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A systematic review of WNV prevalence studies on humans, an

Reconstruction of the Evolutionary History and Dispersal of Usutu Virus, a Neglected Emerging Arbovirus in Europe and Africa.

UNLABELLED: Usutu virus (USUV), one of the most neglected Old World encephalitic flaviviruses, causes epizootics among wild and captive birds and sporadic infection in humans. The dynamics of USUV spread and evolution in its natural hosts are unknown. Here, we present the phylogeny and evolutionary history of all available USUV strains, including 77 newly sequenced complete genomes from a variety of host species at a temporal and spatial scaled resolution. The results showed that USUV can be classified into six distinct lineages and that the most recent common ancestor of the recent European e

THE RELATIONSHIP OF YELLOW FEVER OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE TO THAT OF AFRICA AND TO LEPTOSPIRAL JAUNDICE.

1. The yellow fever now in South America, the present yellow fever of Africa and the historic yellow fever of Panama and other American countries are the same disease. This conclusion is based on cross immunity tests in monkeys with strains of yellow fever virus from Africa and Brazil and on tests of sera from 25 persons, who had recovered from yellow fever in various places and at various times, for the power to protect monkeys against African or Brazilian virus strains. 2. Cases of leptospiral jaundice (Weil's disease) were present among those diagnosed as yellow fever in the recent epidemic

Cost and cost-effectiveness of ivermectin mass drug administration for malaria control in Kwale county, Kenya: a modelling analysis of a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major health burden in sub-Saharan Africa, where traditional vector control methods are hindered by insecticide resistance and evolving mosquito behaviour causing residual transmission. In the BOHEMIA cluster-randomised trial in Kenya, ivermectin mass drug administration (iMDA), delivered once a month for 3 months with approximately 64% population coverage, was shown to reduce malaria incidence by 26%. We aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of iMDA as a supplementary vector control tool using data from the BOHEMIA trial in Kenya. METHODS: We did a cost-effecti
