Hemispheric asymmetries in the control of upper limb movements.

This chapter deals with the unique human abilities of using tools, imitating others' gestures, drawing, and building complex items. Herein, after a brief overview of clinical manifestations and assessment of disorders of tool use and imitation (upper limb apraxia) and of the impairments in drawing and assembling multipart objects (constructional apraxia), brain asymmetries are discussed mainly starting from the neuropsychologic studies on patients with focal brain lesions, although both upper limb apraxia and constructional apraxia are often observed during the course of neurodegenerative dise

Parametrically Managed Activation Functions for Improved Global Potential Energy Surfaces for Six Coupled 5A' States and Fourteen Coupled 3A' States of O + O2.

We report new potential energy surfaces for six coupled 5A' states and 14 coupled 3A' states of O3. The new surfaces are created by parametrically managed diabatization by deep neural network (PM-DDNN). The PM-DDNN method uses calculated adiabatic potential energy surfaces to discover and fit an underlying adiabatic-equivalent set of diabatic surfaces and their couplings and obtains the fit to the adiabatic surfaces by diagonalization of the diabatic potential energy matrix (DPEM). The procedure yields the adiabatic surfaces and their gradients, as well as the DPEM and its gradient. If desired

Real-time arrhythmia detection using convolutional neural networks.

Cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and congestive heart failure, are the leading cause of death both in the United States and worldwide. The current medical practice for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases is not suitable for long-term, out-of-hospital use. A key to long-term monitoring is the ability to detect abnormal cardiac rhythms, i.e., arrhythmia, in real-time. Most existing studies only focus on the accuracy of arrhythmia classification, instead of runtime performance of the workflow. In this paper, we present our work on supporting real-time arrhythmic detection using convol

Combining Force Fields and Neural Networks for an Accurate Representation of Chemically Diverse Molecular Interactions.

A key goal of molecular modeling is the accurate reproduction of the true quantum mechanical potential energy of arbitrary molecular ensembles with a tractable classical approximation. The challenges are that analytical expressions found in general purpose force fields struggle to faithfully represent the intermolecular quantum potential energy surface at close distances and in strong interaction regimes; that the more accurate neural network approximations do not capture crucial physics concepts, e.g., nonadditive inductive contributions and application of electric fields; and that the ultra-

DPProm: A Two-Layer Predictor for Identifying Promoters and Their Types on Phage Genome Using Deep Learning.

With the number of phage genomes increasing, it is urgent to develop new bioinformatics methods for phage genome annotation. Promoter, a DNA region, is important for gene transcriptional regulation. In the era of post-genomics, the availability of data makes it possible to establish computational models for promoter identification with robustness. In this work, we introduce DPProm, a two-layer model composed of DPProm-1L and DPProm-2L, to predict promoters and their types for phages. On the first layer, as a dual-channel deep neural network ensemble method fusing multi-view features (sequence

Brain-wide mapping of resting-state networks in mice using high-frame rate functional ultrasound.

Functional ultrasound (fUS) imaging is a method for visualizing deep brain activity based on cerebral blood volume changes coupled with neural activity, while functional MRI (fMRI) relies on the blood-oxygenation-level-dependent signal coupled with neural activity. Low-frequency fluctuations (LFF) of fMRI signals during resting-state can be measured by resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI), which allows functional imaging of the whole brain, and the distributions of resting-state network (RSN) can then be estimated from these fluctuations using independent component analysis (ICA). This procedure provid

Machine learning to distinguish lymphangioleiomyomatosis from other diffuse cystic lung diseases.

Patients with lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) frequently experience delays in diagnosis, owing partly to the delayed characterization of imaging findings. This project aimed to develop a machine learning model to distinguish LAM from other diffuse cystic lung diseases (DCLDs). Computed tomography scans from patients with confirmed DCLDs were acquired from registry datasets and a recurrent convolutional neural network was trained for their classification. The final model provided sensitivity and specificity of 85% and 92%, respectively, for LAM, similar to the historical metrics of 88% and 97%,

STSC-GNN: A sequence-derived topology-aware graph neural network for solvent-conditioned prediction of peptide structural composition.

Peptide structural composition is strongly influenced by the surrounding solvent environment, making environment-dependent structural prediction important for understanding peptide conformational behavior and structural plasticity. However, many existing computational approaches primarily rely on sequence representations or static structural information and do not explicitly integrate sequence-derived topology with physicochemical properties of the solvent. To address this gap, we developed STSC-GNN, a sequence-derived topology-aware graph neural network for solvent-conditioned prediction of p

Learning signs with NAO: humanoid robot as a tool for helping to learn Colombian Sign Language.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

SPiKe-Med: a hybrid spiking-CNN-transformer framework for energy-efficient brain tumor MRI segmentation.

Early disease detection is crucial for any disease it helps in better treatment and curing. For this purpose, several Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted research studies have been developed and tested for medical image processing. Although traditional Deep Learning (DL) models aid in disease detection, computational complexity and energy-intensive challenges limit the performance. For this reason, this research proposes SPiKe-Med, an efficient, accurate and neuromorphic-inspired solution by incorporating Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) into state-of-the-art Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)

Automatic Segmentation of Ischaemic Stroke Lesions Using Transformers and Convolutional Neural Networks Applied to Multimodal Neuroimaging.

Ischaemic stroke constitutes a leading cause of global disability. Rapid extraction of the infarct core from multimodal computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging guides reperfusion therapy and clinical decision-making. Deep learning algorithms automate this delineation, yet hospital translation is hindered by high-dimensional data, inter-scanner variability, and the low contrast of early ischaemia. Architectural comparisons in the literature frequently carry methodological biases originating from disparate preprocessing protocols and data partitions. This study reduces these variables by eva

Diagnostic features predicted by deep learning improve human object recognition in simulated prosthetic vision.

Objective. Cortical visual prostheses aim to partially restore vision by electrically stimulating V1. Yet, their effectiveness is constrained by the limited number of simultaneously elicitable phosphenes. Identifying sparse but informative visual features for object recognition is therefore crucial to enable functional prosthetic vision. In this study, we aim to target diagnostic features for object recognition.Approach. We combined a deep learning pipeline with bioplausible phosphene simulation to optimize phosphene placement for object recognition. The phosphene renderings were presented to

[Self-supervised classification method for breast pathology images fusing geometric priors and multi-scale attention].

Breast whole slide image (WSI) serves as an essential basis for breast cancer diagnosis and subtype classification. However, its high resolution, multi-scale structural characteristics, and arbitrary orientation pose substantial challenges for automated analysis. Existing deep learning methods typically rely on large amounts of annotated data and struggle to handle the rotational variability and scale differences inherent in pathological images, which limits their generalization ability in cross-center settings. To address these issues, this study proposes a self-supervised learning model, IAM

Advanced Assessment of Stroke in Retinal Fundus Imaging With Deep Multi-View Learning.

Stroke is globally a major cause of mortality and morbidity, and hence, accurate risk assessment and diagnosis of stroke are valuable. Retinal fundus imaging reveals the known markers of elevated stroke risk in the eyes, which are retinal venular widening, arteriolar narrowing, and increased tortuosity. In contrast to other imaging techniques used for stroke assessment, the acquisition of fundus images is easy, non-invasive, fast, and inexpensive. This paper examines the feasibility of utilizing retinal fundus imaging to differentiate individuals with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA),

Intelligent meningioma grading based on medical features.

BACKGROUND: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors in adults. Low-grade meningiomas have a low recurrence rate, whereas high-grade meningiomas are highly aggressive and recurrent. Therefore, the pathological grading information is crucial for treatment, as well as follow-up and prognostic guidance. Most previous studies have used radiomics or deep learning methods to extract feature information for grading meningiomas. However, some radiomics features are pixel-level features that can be influenced by factors such as image resolution and sharpness. Additionally, deep learn

Hybrid greylag goose and particle swarm optimization for early detection of Parkinson's disease from speech features.

Parkinson's disease is brought on by a disturbance in the functions of the brain cells that are responsible for the production of dopamine, which is a chemical that enables brain cells to interact with one another. The cells in the brain responsible for the production of dopamine are the ones in charge of the regulation, adaptability, and fluency of movements. When sixty to eighty percent of these cells are gone, there is a lack of sufficient dopamine production, which makes Parkinson's motor symptoms manifest. In this study, a robust diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is presented in terms of o

CNN based method for classifying cervical cancer cells in pap smear images.

The absence of reliable early treatment serves as one of the main causes of cervical cancer. Hence, it is crucial to detect cervical cancer early. The biggest challenge in diagnosing cervical cancer early is that it is asymptomatic until it develops into invasive carcinoma. In medical applications, the use of machine learning and deep learning is successful as a classifier in the preliminary identification of cancerous cells in the cervical region. In our study, we present a CNN-based method for the classification of cervical cancer cells. We present a method for accurately classifying Pap sme
