Hypnosis applications to the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder.

Current evidence-based therapies considered efficacious for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) include Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), and medication treatments. Hypnosis, one of the first mind-body therapies known to Western medicine, has been used for mind-body problems such as conversion reactions, medication-less anesthesia, and wound healing. Because PTSD is a mind-body problem, hypnosis seems especially suited for its treatment. Hypnosis is a state-based treatment that can move PTSD patients into a s

Clinical Trials in Prader-Willi Syndrome: A Review.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a complex, genetic, neurodevelopmental disorder. PWS has three molecular genetic classes. The most common defect is due to a paternal 15q11-q13 deletion observed in about 60% of individuals. This is followed by maternal disomy 15 (both 15 s from the mother), found in approximately 35% of cases. the remaining individuals have a defect of the imprinting center that controls the activity of imprinted genes on chromosome 15. Mild cognitive impairment and behavior problems in PWS include self-injury, anxiety, compulsions, and outbursts in childhood, impacted by geneti

Cannabinoids as Potential Molecules for Addiction Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Addictions are a group of chronic and recurrent diseases of the brain characterized by a pathological search for reward or relief through the use of a substance or other action. This situation implies an inability to control behavior, difficulty in permanent abstinence, a compelling desire to consume, decreased recognition of significant problems caused by behavior and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. The result is a decrease in the quality of life of the affected person, generating problems in their work, academic activities, social relationship

Heterogeneity of decision-making strategies for preschoolers on a variant of the IGT.

Adaptive decision-making strategies are critical for dealing with the complexity of the social world. The present study investigated the use of decision-making strategies in preschoolers and their association to prosocial behavior and peer problems. Eighty-six preschoolers aged 3- and 4-years completed the preschool decision-making task (PGT), a child variant of the Iowa Gambling task . Win-stay/lose-shift responses along with exploration (consecutive choices from the advantageous deck) and exploitation (shifting between options) were examined. Preschoolers showed a range of strategies, with 4

Repurposing steroidogenesis inhibitors for the therapy of neuropsychiatric disorders: Promises and caveats.

Steroids exert a profound influence on behavioral reactivity, by modulating the functions of most neurotransmitters and shaping the impact of stress and sex-related variables on neural processes. This background - as well as the observation that most neuroactive steroids (including sex hormones, glucocorticoids and neurosteroids) are synthetized and metabolized by overlapping enzymatic machineries - points to steroidogenic pathways as a powerful source of targets for neuropsychiatric disorders. Inhibitors of steroidogenic enzymes have been developed and approved for a broad range of genitourin

The effect of maternal employment on the elementary and junior high school students' mental health in Maku.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Most experts view the childhood period as a foundation for shaping the individuals' fundamental future characteristics and behaviors. They believe that parents' personality and behavior quality exert a greater effect on the development of a child's personality than other factors. Given the mothers' role in children's mental health and considering the fact that children are a nation's future makers, the present study was designed to investigate the impact of maternal employment on students' mental health in Maku. MATERIALS & METHODS: The present study is descriptive and

Detrimental for Some? Heterogeneous Effects of Maternal Incarceration on Child Wellbeing.

RESEARCH SUMMARY: We use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,197) to consider the heterogeneous effects of maternal incarceration on 9-year-old children. We find that maternal incarceration has no average effects on child well-being (measured by caregiver-reported internalizing problem behaviors, caregiver-reported externalizing problem behaviors, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Third Edition scores, and child-reported early juvenile delinquency) but that the effects vary by mothers' propensities for experiencing incarceration. Maternal incarceration is deleterious …

Neuropsychological deficits in adolescents with fetal alcohol syndrome: clinical findings.

Understanding the nature of cognitive deficits among adolescent patients with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) can direct future research on assessment and intervention. In an exploratory study, nine nonretarded teenagers with FAS were administered tests of IQ and adaptive behavior, and neuropsychological tests presumed sensitive to alcohol effects. Their performance was compared with psychometric norms and to data from a sample of 174 adolescents with minimal or no prenatal alcohol exposure. These nonretarded FAS patients commonly showed behavior problems, decreased social competence, and poor sc

An examination of the cocaine relapse process.

Although empirical studies of the relapse process have been done with alcoholics, smokers, and opiate addicts, comparatively little information is available on the relapse process in cocaine abusers. This paper presents data from the Cocaine Relapse Interview (CRI), a structured interview that assesses factors associated with the onset, course, and termination of cocaine relapse episodes. In a sample of 95 cocaine dependent patients, the experiences that occurred with the greatest frequency immediately prior to relapse were wanting drugs, being alone, having money, and feeling extremely bored

Assessing the predictive value of teacher reports in a high risk sample for schizophrenia: a ROC analysis.

We examined teachers' reports to determine early patterns of school behavior that identify children who were diagnosed schizophrenic in adulthood. High risk subjects (n = 207) in the Copenhagen High Risk for schizophrenia project were examined on a 25-item questionnaire completed by teachers. A likelihood ratio approach was used to create a classification index relating school report to DSM-IIIR diagnoses made 31 years later. A standard receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the efficacy of the classification indices for distinguishing preschizophrenics from chil

Presentation, clinical course, and outcome of the congenital form of myotonic dystrophy.

We report the clinical experience of 18 patients with the congenital form of myotonic dystrophy, the majority of whom were diagnosed during the neonatal period and monitored from 5 to 14 years. Prematurity associated with congenital myotonic dystrophy gives rise to the severest clinical manifestations. Among them, respiratory involvement is common and is the leading cause of death in the neonatal period. Weakness and foot deformities secondary to muscle involvement are the predominant clinical features of this group of patients from birth to age 3 or 4 years. Once muscle strength improves, lea

Psychosocial adjustment and physical growth in children with imperforate anus or abdominal wall defects.

Pediatric surgeons have the unique responsibility of performing surgical procedures that will enable their patients to function normally throughout a lifetime. Good anatomic results may not ensure that this goal will be achieved. Using a battery of psychological testing instruments, we evaluated the academic achievement and psychosocial status of 56 children (mean age, 10.6 years) with imperforate anus (IA) and abdominal wall defects (AWDs). Physical growth was assessed by measurement of standard anthropometric parameters, and a parent questionnaire was used to define clinical status. As a gro

Lower metacognitive abilities predict procrastination: a cross-sectional study of a healthy adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Procrastination, the tendency to delay tasks despite negative consequences, is a widespread issue linked to poor mental health and reduced daily functioning. While often attributed to self-regulation failures, the specific cognitive mechanisms underlying procrastination remain unclear. This study investigates the role of executive functions (EF), measured through both self-report and performance-based tests, in predicting procrastination in adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 108 adults (22–65 years) using the Irrational Procrastination Scale (IPS) to measur

Internet Gaming Disorder, Problem Gambling Symptoms and Mental Health in Spanish Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study on the Role of Microtransactions and Loot Boxes.

Background/Objectives: Adolescent mental health problems have increased in recent years, with growing concern about the impact of digital behaviors such as problematic video game use and gambling. Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and Problem Gambling Symptoms may share psychological risk markers, but evidence in Spanish adolescents is limited. This study aimed to examine the relationship between IGD, problem gambling symptoms, and mental health, and to identify sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral factors associated, including microtransactions and loot boxes. Methods: A cross-section

Pro-Inflammatory Dietary Profiles Are Associated with Psychosocial Functioning in Spanish Adolescents: Findings from the EHDLA Study.

Background: Dietary factors may influence psychosocial outcomes through inflammatory pathways, but evidence in adolescents remains limited. The aim was to examine whether dietary inflammatory potential is associated with psychosocial functioning among Spanish adolescents. Methods: This cross-sectional study is based on a subsample from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project, conducted in the Region of Murcia (Spain). Dietary inflammatory potential was assessed using a dietary inflammatory index (DII)-informed Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ)-derived inflammatory score b

PAK3 pathogenic variant associated with sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy in a family with parental mosaicism.

Protein-activated kinases mediate spine morphogenesis and synaptic plasticity. PAK3 is part of the p21-activated kinases (PAKs) family of Ras-signaling serine/threonine kinases. Pathogenic variants in the X-linked gene PAK3 have been described in patients with neurodevelopmental syndromes. We analyzed an Italian family with sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy, intellectual disability, psychiatric and behavioral problems, and dysmorphic facial features. A novel PAK3 c.342_344del (p.Lys114del) inframe deletion was detected in the family. Protein structure analysis supported deleterious impact of p

The impact of parental overprotection on the emotions and behaviors of pediatric hematologic cancer patients: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Parental overprotection may have an impact on children's emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs). As pediatric hematologic cancer patients have compromised immune systems, parents of such children often worry excessively, interfering with their daily lives. Therefore, avoiding overprotection is crucial for the overall physical and mental health of pediatric hematologic cancer patients. AIMS: The aim of this study was to examine the current status of EBPs in pediatric hematologic cancer patients and analyze their associated risk factors. DESIGN: This work was a multicenter cross-

Brain structural changes and molecular analyses in children with benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes.

BACKGROUND: Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is a common childhood epilepsy syndrome, accompanied by behavioral problems and cognitive impairments. Previous studies of BECTS-related brain structures applied univariate analysis and showed inconsistent results. And neurotransmitter patterns associated with brain structural alterations were still unclear. METHODS: Structural images of twenty-one drug-naïve children with BECTS and thirty-five healthy controls (HCs) were scanned. Segmented gray matter volume (GMV) images were decomposed into independent components (ICs) using the

Feasibility and Preliminary Efficacy of Two Technology-assisted Vocal Interventions for Older Adults Living in a Residential Facility.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: An increasing number of older adults are seeking behavioral voice therapy to manage their voice problems. Poor adherence to voice therapy is a known problem across all treatment-seeking populations. Given age-related physical and cognitive impairments and multiple chronic conditions, older adults are more susceptible to low adherence to behavioral therapies. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of an at-home, vocal training intervention for older adults without a known voice disorder living in a senior living community, as well as compare the effects of
