Family functioning of perinatal substance abusers in treatment.

This prospective study examined family characteristics of perinatal substance abusers enrolled in an intensive outpatient treatment program both during and after treatment. Data is provided on family functioning in three areas: current family, family of origin, and love/partner relationship, and at six time points up to 24 months postdischarge. Standard family assessment measures, including the Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI) and Family-of-Origin Scale (FOS) were utilized to measure current family functioning and family of origin health, respectively. A new instrument, the Relationship Asse

Auditory velocity discrimination in the horizontal plane at very high velocities.

We determined velocity discrimination thresholds and Weber fractions for sounds revolving around the listener at very high velocities. Sounds used were a broadband white noise and two harmonic sounds with fundamental frequencies of 330 Hz and 1760 Hz. Experiment 1 used velocities ranging between 288°/s and 720°/s in an acoustically treated room and Experiment 2 used velocities between 288°/s and 576°/s in a highly reverberant hall. A third experiment addressed potential confounds in the first two experiments. The results show that people can reliably discriminate velocity at very high velociti

Visual evoked responses in the diagnosis and management of patients suspected of multiple sclerosis.

Averaged visual evoked responses to pattern reversal stimuli have been recorded in 54 control subjects, 51 patients with multiple sclerosis, and 55 patients with other neurological diseases which might involve the visual apparatus. The latency to the peak of the major positive potential in normal subjects under the age of 60 was 104 msec or less (mean 90-5 msec+3 SD). The latency of the VER was prolonged above this value in one or both eyes in 67 per cent of the patients with multiple sclerosis (in 84 per cent of those with definite multiple sclerosis, in 83 per cent of those with probable mul

"Look Versus See": Does Varying Fellow Eye Contrast Affect Perception of the Amblyopic Eye?

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate how modulating fellow eye (FE) contrast during dichoptic visual search impacts amblyopic eye (AE) perception and oculomotor behavior in amblyopia. By leveraging eye-tracking data, we investigated how FE contrast and sensory-motor factors influence perceptual outcomes, distinguishing successful attentional allocation and target identification ("look and see") from "look but failed to see" (LBFTS) and "no look, no see" errors. METHODS: All participants performed visual search under monocular and dichoptic viewing with varied FE contrasts. High-resolution ey

Impact of 3D high-definition laparoscopy on total laparoscopic hysterectomy: a body mass index-stratified retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) high-definition (HD) laparoscopy is a promising tool in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, offering enhanced depth perception and visualization. However, its role in total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), particularly in patients with varying body mass index (BMI), remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of 3D HD laparoscopy on surgical efficiency and patient outcomes in TLH, with a focus on BMI-related differences. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: A single-center retrospective study. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty patients who underwent TLH were in

Computer-supported spinal fusion rod shaping yields improved conformity compared to freehand bending.

During spinal fusion surgery, metallic rods must be shaped to conform to pedicle screw positions. Poor conformity can overload screws, causing pull-out or loosening. Manual freehand rod bending is perception-dependent, time-consuming, cognitively demanding, and variable. We propose and evaluate a workflow in which rod shape is computed virtually via multi-objective optimization and then manually realized with a custom tool. The algorithm minimizes bend number and angle to improve efficiency and preserve rod strength. Seven spine surgeons each bent rods for a 7-level screw configuration using b

Increased early motivational response to food in adolescent anorexia nervosa revealed by magnetoencephalography.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear to what extent reduced nutritional intake in anorexia nervosa (AN) is a consequence of a reduced motivational response to food. Although self-reports typically suggest AN patients have a reduced appetitive response, behavioral and neurophysiological measures have revealed evidence for both increased and reduced attentional biases towards food stimuli. The mechanisms influencing food perception in AN, might be clarified using time-sensitive magnetoencephalography (MEG) to differentiate the early (more automatic processing) stages from the late (more controlled) st

Visuo-Perceptual and Decision-Making Contributions to Visual Hallucinations in Mild Cognitive Impairment in Lewy Body Disease: Insights from a Drift Diffusion Analysis.

Background: Visual hallucinations (VH) are a common symptom in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB); however, their cognitive underpinnings remain unclear. Hallucinations have been related to cognitive slowing in DLB and may arise due to impaired sensory input, dysregulation in top-down influences over perception, or an imbalance between the two, resulting in false visual inferences. Methods: Here we employed a drift diffusion model yielding estimates of perceptual encoding time, decision threshold, and drift rate of evidence accumulation to (i) investigate the nature of DLB-related slowing of resp

Quantifying the time for accurate EEG decoding of single value-based decisions.

BACKGROUND: Recent neuroimaging studies suggest that value-based decision-making may rely on mechanisms of evidence accumulation. However no studies have explicitly investigated the time when single decisions are taken based on such an accumulation process. NEW METHOD: Here, we outline a novel electroencephalography (EEG) decoding technique which is based on accumulating the probability of appearance of prototypical voltage topographies and can be used for predicting subjects' decisions. We use this approach for studying the time-course of single decisions, during a task where subjects were a

Decoding ability makes waves in reading: deficient interactions between attention and phonological analysis in developmental dyslexia.

Whilst there is general consensus that phonological processing is deficient in developmental dyslexia, recent research also implicates visuo-attentional contributions. Capitalising on the P3a wave of event-related potentials as an index of attentional capture, we tested dyslexic and normal readers on a novel variant of a visual oddball task to examine the interplay of orthographic-phonological integration and attentional engagement. Targets were animal words (10% occurrence). Amongst nontarget stimuli were two critical conditions: pseudohomophones of targets (10%) and control pseudohomophones

The effects of experimentally induced conductive hearing loss on spectral and temporal aspects of sound transmission through the ear.

Conductive hearing loss (CHL) is known to produce hearing deficits, including deficits in sound localization ability. The differences in sound intensities and timing experienced between the two tympanic membranes are important cues to sound localization (ILD and ITD, respectively). Although much is known about the effect of CHL on hearing levels, little investigation has been conducted into the actual impact of CHL on sound location cues. This study investigated effects of CHL induced by earplugs on cochlear microphonic (CM) amplitude and timing and their corresponding effect on the ILD and IT

Early adaptation to repeated unfamiliar faces across viewpoint changes in the right hemisphere: evidence from the N170 ERP component.

Event-related potential (ERP) studies have shown that sensitivity to individual faces emerges as early as approximately 160ms in the human occipitotemporal cortex (N170). Here we tested whether this effect generalizes across changes in viewpoint. We recorded ERPs during an unfamiliar individual face adaptation paradigm. Participants were presented first with an adapting face ( approximately 3000ms) rotated 30 degrees in depth, followed by a second face (200ms) in a frontal view of either the same or a different identity. The N170 amplitude at right occipitotemporal sites to the second stimulus

Time-dependent activation of parieto-frontal networks for directing attention to tactile space. A study with paired transcranial magnetic stimulation pulses in right-brain-damaged patients with extinction.

Tactile extinction has been interpreted as an attentional disorder, closely related to hemineglect, due to hyperactivation of the unaffected hemisphere, resulting in an ipsilesional attentional bias. Paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques, with a subthreshold conditioning stimulus (CS) followed at various interstimulus intervals (ISIs) by a suprathreshold test stimulus (TS), are useful for investigating intracortical inhibition and facilitation in the human motor cortex. In the present work, we investigated the effects of paired TMS over the posterior parietal and frontal co
