BACKGROUND: ABO/Rh blood groups play a pivotal role in the practice of transfusion medicine. To our knowledge, there have been no large studies reporting these blood group antigen frequencies in the United States (US) since 2004, and the most recent large study only reported antigen frequencies for donors, not patients. We sought to determine and compare the ABO/RhD antigen frequencies in patient and donor populations.
METHODS: In this multi-center retrospective cohort study, five California academic medical centers and one national blood center reviewed blood group and demographic data from

The aim of this paper is to reconsider the significance of a positive direct antiglobulin test for cord blood, especially in the case of administration of anti-D immunoglobulin for postpartum immunoprophylaxis. In 421 samples of cord blood, 14(3.3%) positive results were obtained in a direct antiglobulin test. From these cord blood cells, antibodies were eluted and identified as follows: anti-A, 6; anti-B, 6; anti-E+ c, 1 and anti-Jra, 1. Thus, not all cases giving positive results in a direct antiglobulin test in cord blood at delivery have anti-D antibodies. And the elution test should be do

BACKGROUND: The histo-blood group ABO system has been associated with adverse outcomes in COVID-19, thromboembolic diseases and Plasmodium falciparum malaria. An integral part of the severe malaria pathogenesis is rosetting, the adherence of parasite infected red blood cells (RBCs) to uninfected RBCs. Rosetting is influenced by the host's ABO blood group (Bg) and rosettes formed in BgA have previously been shown to be more resilient to disruption by heparin and shield the parasite derived surface antigens from antibodies. However, data on rosetting in weak BgA subgroups is scarce and based on

Although a successful auxiliary partial orthotopic liver transplantation (APOLT) demands technical expertise, it provides an opportunity for a post-liver transplant (LT) immunosuppression-free life. With the advent of newer medications and an implicit understanding of the post-LT immunopathophysiology, clinicians have successfully breached the ABO barrier. However, given the time constraints among other factors, the immunological outcomes of this ABO incompatible LT (ABOiLT) remain suboptimal in the setting of an acute liver failure (ALF). Here, we report an urgent ABOi-APOLT in a child with A

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) occurs in approximately 1 out of 3000 live births. Severe presentations are atypical but must be recognized and treated rapidly to avoid life-threatening organ dysfunction.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we report an unusual case of neonatal ABO HDN that illustrates the enormous inflammatory potential of maternal-fetal blood group mismatch. Following an uneventful delivery notable only for HDN caused by maternal anti-B IgG, our patient developed shock, DIC, and renal failure. Despite numerous interventions, she experienced a rapid clinical decline a

BACKGROUND: Immunoadsorption (IA) plasmapheresis is standard modality for pretransplant desensitization in ABO-incompatible solid organ transplants though technically challenging when considered for an infant or a child less than 10 kg due to non-availability of pediatric immunoadsorption (IA) columns. The major challenge is to maintain hemodynamic stability considering the large extracorporeal circuit volume meant for adults. To our best knowledge after extensive search in acclaimed global medical journals, this is the first successful attempt in an underweight (6 kg) infant of less than 1 ye

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The existence of a blood group preference for ticks is a problem widely discussed among the lay public but often neglected by the scientific community. The Ixodes ricinus tick transmits serious zoonotic diseases such as Lyme borreliosis, tick encephalitis, or anaplasmosis. The preventive strategies include vaccination (if available) and individual measures including the use of repellents and avoidance of risk areas.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Since this topic is relatively neglected in the scientific literature, a simple in vitro method was used. Ticks used in this stu

The independent genomic inheritance of the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) and the ABO-blood group system allows for HLA-matched hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation (HCT) to occur in donors who are not matched for ABO blood groups. In fact, nearly one-half of all HCT will involve recipient-donor ABO incompatibility. This places the recipient at increased risk for acute and delayed hemolytic reactions, delayed RBC engraftment, and pure red blood cell aplasia. Additionally, clinical and laboratory evaluation for potential non-ABO, minor RBC antigen-antibody discrepancies may be beneficia

With ABO blood group incompatibility (ABOi) between donor and recipient becoming a part of mainstream living-donor renal transplantation, the applicability of ABOi to other areas of transplantation is being reconsidered. Here we present a case of inadvertent ABOi lung retransplantation managed successfully with initial plasmapheresis, antithymocyte globulin and intravenous immunoglobulin; and subsequently with oral cyclophosphamide and sirolimus in addition to tacrolimus and prednisolone. Interestingly, in the setting of solid levels of tacrolimus and sirolimus, the patient developed a fatal t

When a renal transplant candidate's only medically-acceptable living kidney donor is ABO incompatible, the most common practice is to place them on the deceased donor list. Over the past few years, the implementation of paired kidney donor exchange programs and the development of protocols to overcome the ABO blood group barrier have become much more successful and widespread. Here we review the therapeutic options for patients whose only living kidney donor is ABO incompatible, with a specific emphasis on the rationale for and the current outcomes of ABO incompatible living donor kidney trans

AIMS: To investigate the incidence of severe fetal-to-maternal transfusion after delivery and to identify risk factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a prospective study at the Department of Obstetrics, Charité, Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Berlin, Germany, we analyzed the incidence of severe fetal-to-maternal transfusion (>10 ml) and fetal-to-maternal hemorrhage (>25 ml) in Rh D-negative pregnant women after delivery of Rh D-positive infants. 942 women were included in the study and Kleihauer-Betke tests were performed. The results were compared to perinatal data.
RESULTS: Fetal-to-maternal hemorrha

Based on the long-term experience with ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation, the following can be concluded: 1. Renal transplantation across ABO incompatibility is an acceptable treatment for patients with end-stage renal failure. [table: see text] 2. Long-term patient and graft survival in ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation is influenced primarily by acute rejection episodes occurring within 1 year. 3. Despite the removal of anti-ABO natural antibodies before transplantation, hyperacute rejection crises may occur in some cases. 4. Humoral rejection is the most prominent type of reject
