Action of the inspiratory muscles of the rib cage during breathing in newborns.

To determine whether the rib cage muscles actively contribute to tidal volume change in infancy, we measured tidal volume (VT), using a pneumotachograph, respiratory gastric pressure swings (Pga), using a liquid-filled gastric catheter, and rib cage and abdominal volume, using respiratory inductive plethysmography in 15 newborns, both before and during 2% CO2-induced hyperventilation. Active rib cage expansion produced by phasic contraction of the inspiratory muscles of the rib cage should reduce respiratory abdominal pressure fluctuations by moving the anterior abdominal wall outward and ceph

Post-Partum Diastasis Recti Abdominis Treatment Using the Extended-View Totally Extraperitoneal Approach, Rives-Stoppa Technique, and Transversus Abdominis Release Procedure.

INTRODUCTION: Diastasis recti abdominis usually occurs during pregnancy and delivery in young women with no surgical history, and can induce a severely negative body image, urogynecological symptoms, and musculoskeletal pain. However, the optimal surgical procedure for diastasis recti abdominis is undetermined, and minimally invasive surgery has not been adopted. Additionally, open repair causes scarring that is unlikely to improve negative body image and may even worsen it. We present a case of diastasis recti abdominis surgically treated using an extended-view totally extraperitoneal approac

The Activity of Surface Electromyographic Signal of Selected Muscles during Classic Rehabilitation Exercise.

Objectives. Prone bridge, unilateral bridge, supine bridge, and bird-dog are classic rehabilitation exercises, which have been advocated as effective ways to improve core stability among healthy individuals and patients with low back pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the activity of seven selected muscles during rehabilitation exercises through the signal of surface electromyographic. Approaches. We measured the surface electromyographic signals of four lower limb muscles, two abdominal muscles, and one back muscle during rehabilitation exercises of 30 healthy students and then an…

Respiratory muscle dysfunction after herpes zoster.

We report an unusual neurologic complication of herpes zoster. After thoracic herpes zoster, our patient complained of severe shortness of breath as a result of myoclonus of the abdominal muscles as documented by electromyography. The myoclonus resulted in repetitive interruption of expiratory air flow, resulting in shortness of breath and a staccato speech. This case demonstrates the need to evaluate the function of all the respiratory muscles in a patient complaining of dyspnea.

Relationship between Preoperative Abdominal Wall Strength and Bulging at the Abdominal Free Flap Donor Site for Breast Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal bulging at the donor site of free abdominal flaps for breast reconstruction is a common postoperative complication. In addition to the thickness of abdominal muscles, the authors identified the rectus abdominis diastasis as an important factor that compromises abdominal wall strength. This study aimed to assess the relationship between preoperative abdominal wall strength and postoperative abdominal bulging. METHODS: A total of 224 patients were enrolled in this study. Patient demographics, the rectus and lateral abdominis muscle thicknesses, and the rate of rectus abdom…

Pelvic floor anatomy and applied physiology.

Pelvic floor muscles have two major functions: they provide support or act as a floor for the abdominal viscera including the rectum; and they provide a constrictor or continence mechanism to the urethral, anal, and vaginal orifices (in females). This article discusses the relevance of pelvic floor to the anal opening and closure function, and discusses new findings with regards to the role of these muscles in the vaginal and urethra closure mechanisms.

Vaginal delivery in a woman with prune belly syndrome: a case report.

Prune belly syndrome (PBS) is a rare congenital disorder predominantly affecting males, making cases involving females, and particularly pregnant women, uncommon. A clinical manifestation of PBS is abdominal muscle deficiency, which may contribute to a prolonged second stage of labor (PSSL). To date, only four cases of labor in women with PBS have been reported in the literature: three gave birth by cesarean section (CS) and one by vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery. Whether spontaneous vaginal delivery is achievable in women with PBS and hypoplastic abdominal muscles without the need for instru…

Immediate Effect of Kinesio Taping on Lumbopelvic Stability in Postpartum Women With Diastasis Recti: A Review.

Diastasis of abdominal muscles is defined as a gap of more than two finger breadths between two rectal abdominal muscle bellies, above or below the umbilicus. According to the literature, female diastasis recti is more common in women who have recently given birth although it also occurs in the male population. Lower back pain is the most prevalent reason for postpartum women to restrict their everyday activities. Women's mobility, discomfort, and typical activities are all concerns for postpartum women, all of which change a person's quality of life. During pregnancy, diastasis of the rectus …

Abdominoplasty with two fusiform plications.

Two-fusiform plications are recommended for contouring the abdomen to produce a slimmer waistline in abdominoplasty, rather than the classic … loss of the natural contour between the rectus muscles. Maintenance of the natural contours of the abdominal muscles is of fundamental importance to reduce the embarrassment of a postabdominoplasty flat abdomen.

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella isolates from apparently healthy slaughtered cattle in Ethiopia.

The prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Salmonella isolates was determined from apparently healthy slaughtered cattle at Debre Zeit (Ethiopia). A total of 323 cattle were examined for the presence of Salmonella in faeces, mesenteric lymph nodes, abdominal and diaphragmatic muscles. Salmonellae were cultured from 23 (7.1%) of the animals. Salmonellae were isolated from 2 (3.1%) and 3 (4.5%) of 65 pooled faecal and mesenteric lymph node samples, respectively. Nine (2.8%) abdominal muscle and 10 (3.1%) diaphragmatic muscle samples (n = 323 of each) were contaminated by Salmonella.

Painful Abdominal Outpouching in an Adult Male.

Post-herpetic abdominal pseudohernia is a neurologic complication of herpes zoster resulting from paresis of the abdominal wall muscles ipsilateral to the eruption. This poorly known condition may raise suspicion for true abdominal wall hernia or other concerning etiologies, resulting in extensive work-up and imaging. Post-herpetic abdominal pseudohernia is a relatively benign condition, which resolves spontaneously in the majority of cases. Therefore, it is important for the clinician to be aware of this complication in order to avoid unnecessary imaging or excessive management, which may inc

[Abdominal distension due to herpes zoster].

A case is reported in which an abdominal protrusion appeared in relation with a zosteric eruption at 11th dorsal dermatome. The motor deficit in zoster is unusual (2-3% in the reported series) and generally recognized when the extremities are affected. The frequency with which the abdominal muscles are involved is estimated to be around 0.17%, according to a clinical series. The aim of this report is to draw attention to the abdominal wall paresis that can result when zoster involves the caudal dorsal dermatomyotomes. This in turn, leads to abdominal distension which needs to be differentiated…

Abdominothoracic mechanisms of functional abdominal distension and correction by biofeedback.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In patients with functional gut disorders, abdominal distension has been associated with descent of the diaphragm and protrusion of the anterior abdominal wall. We investigated mechanisms of abdominal distension in these patients. METHODS: We performed a prospective study of 45 patients (42 women, 24-71 years old) with functional intestinal disorders (27 with irritable bowel syndrome with constipation, 15 with functional bloating, and 3 with irritable bowel syndrome with alternating bowel habits) and discrete episodes of visible abdominal distension. Subjects were assessed

Embryonic myosin heavy chain and troponin T isoforms remain in the cremaster muscle of adult rat cryptorchidism induced with flutamide.

We examined the immunolocalization of isoforms of muscle proteins, myosin and troponin, in the cremaster muscle of the undescended testis (cryptorchidism). In cryptorchid rats induced by a nonsteroidal androgen antagonist, flutamide, the cremaster muscle contained embryonic myosin and embryonic/cardiac troponin T in both immunofluorescence microscopy and Western blotting using antibodies against myosin and troponin T specific for embryonic, cardiac and fast skeletal muscles. However, in muscles other than the cremaster muscle, i. e., the masseter, pectoral and abdominal muscles, embryonic isof…

Measurement of voluntary activation of abdominal flexors using transcranial magnetic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been used to assess voluntary activation (VA) of limb and back muscles, however its ability to assess abdominal muscle VA is unknown. The assessment of abdominal muscle VA using TMS could be applied to patients with trunk dysfunction to enable further understanding of the neurophysiology of trunk control, inform practice and enable the development and monitoring of rehabilitation programmes. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate use of TMS and the twitch interpolation technique to measure voluntary activation of abdominal muscles…
