Protection of trabecular bone in ovariectomized rats by turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) is dependent on extract composition.

Extracts prepared from turmeric (Curcuma longa L., [Zingiberaceae]) containing bioactive phenolic curcuminoids were evaluated for bone-protective effects in a hypogonadal rat model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Three-month female Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized (OVX) and treated with a chemically complex turmeric fraction (41% curcuminoids by weight) or a curcuminoid-enriched turmeric fraction (94% curcuminoids by weight), both dosed at 60 mg/kg 3x per week, or vehicle alone. Effects of two months of treatment on OVX-induced bone loss were followed prospectively by serial assessment

Prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a common skeletal disease characterized by reduced bone strength and increased risk for fractures. Fragility fractures are associated with serious clinical consequences, including chronic pain, skeletal deformities, loss of independence, and increased mortality. Although osteoporosis is underdiagnosed and undertreated, many who are treated take medication incorrectly or do not continue it long enough to benefit. Measures to prevent osteoporosis include a healthy lifestyle, with regular physical activity, adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D, and avoidance of cigarette smoki

Premenopausal osteoporosis.

While osteoporosis is a major public health concern, guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of low bone mass in the premenopausal population is lacking. Dual-energy x-ray absorptometry (DEXA) is a poor diagnostic tool to evaluate bone density in this population and the World Health Organization's definition of osteoporosis based on DEXA is not applicable to women before menopause. Bisphosphonates, while commonly used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis, are not recommended in most premenopausal patients due to their long half-lives and side-effect profiles, therefore limiting the pharmacologi

[What's new in postmenopausal osteoporosis].

The ability of bone to resist fracture is the best indicator of bone quality and is potentially related to several bone properties, including quality, turnover rate, microarchitecture, geometry, and mineralization. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends routine osteoporosis screening (by DXA) beginning at age 65 years for all women, and beginning at age 60 years for those at high risk. These recommendations are controversial, because no randomized trial results have shown that screening ultimately prevents fractures. Additional radiologic procedures may be helpful, particularly to

Absorptiometric assessment of muscle-bone relationships in humans: reference, validation, and application studies.

This report summarizes some preliminary absorptiometric (DXA, QCT/pQCT) studies from our laboratory, supporting the following assumptions. 1. In Homo sapiens at all ages, natural proportionality between DXA-assessed bone mineral mass (bone mineral content, BMC) and muscle mass (lean mass, LM) of the whole body or limbs is specific for ethnicity, gender, and reproductive status, but not for body weight, height, or body mass index. 2. This proportionality is sensitive to many kinds of endocrine-metabolic perturbations. 3. Percentilized or Z-scored charts of the BMC/LM correlations as determined

Bone mineral density in chronic renal insufficiency and end-stage renal disease: how to interpret the scans.

Bone disorders are common in renal disease and stem largely from deregulation of serum levels of calcium and phosphorus. Accurate methods of assessment are required to monitor bone mineral content and density changes in patients with renal disease, but current methods are complicated. Interpretation of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements in children is difficult, because the areal component that is measured does not adequately reflect bone that is constantly growing. In adults with renal disease, the inability of DXA measurements to distinguish between cortical and cancellous b

Standards and guidelines for performing central dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in premenopausal women, men, and children.

The Canadian Panel of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry has developed standards in order to establish the minimum level of acceptable performance for the practice of bone densitometry in Canada. Previously, this group addressed the performance of densitometry in postmenopausal women. This report addresses the use of densitometry in men, premenopausal women, and children with a focus on dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

Vertebral mineral density measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in a group of healthy Italian boxer dogs.

We studied the feasibility of using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to obtain reference bone density values in relation to age, gender and body weight in growing and young adult Italian boxer dogs. The study was performed on eight animals (three males and five females) at 7, 12 and 18 months of age. Animals were carefully examined and blood samples were collected from each dog to detect any sign of metabolic and/or endocrine disease. Each subject underwent radiographs to evaluate growth of the spine and hip. One female was not considered in the statistical model because of the developm

[Diagnosis of osteoporosis. How do you manage it?].

For the diagnosis of osteoporosis, conventional X-rays, densitometry and laboratory investigations are available to supplement history-taking and physical examination. The medical history should aim to identify risk factors for osteoporosis which, together with the clinical examination, can provide useful evidence for the presence of secondary osteoporosis. In the first instance, conventional X-rays serve to document osteoporotic fractures, but alone are not suitable for establishing an early diagnosis of osteoporosis. Today, the method of choice for the evaluation of osteoporosis and the frac

Bone mineral density in women with essential hypertension.

Recent studies have reported the abnormalities in calcium metabolism at the systemic level in human hypertension as well as in experimental hypertension. Because bone is the largest store of calcium in the body, the bone calcium content and mineralization may represent the entire calcium balance. The present study was undertaken to investigate the bone mineral density (BMD) in women with essential hypertension by means of the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometric (DXA) method. The DXA analysis showed a significant decrease in BMD in female hypertensive subjects compared with normotensive subjects.

Inappropriate reference range for peak bone mineral density in dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry: implications for the interpretation of T-scores.

An inappropriate reference range for peak bone mineral density (BMD) may result in identification of an incorrect proportion of subjects with osteopenia and osteoporosis at dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In this study, we assessed the prevalence of low BMD in Turkish young adults with respect to local population reference range T-scores and the US reference range T-scores. The BMD values of lumbar spine (L1-L4) and proximal femur (femoral neck, intertrochanter, trochanter, Ward's triangle and total) were measured by DXA in 323 healthy young adults (171 women, 152 men) aged 19-25 years

Cupid's bow contour of the vertebral body: evaluation of pathogenesis with bone densitometry and imaging-histopathologic correlation.

PURPOSE: To investigate the Cupid's bow contour by means of bone densitometry and imaging-histopathologic correlation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiographs and histologic slices were obtained in 64 cadaveric thoracolumbar spines to assess the morphology, distribution, and histopathologic features of the Cupid's bow contour. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and radiography were performed in the lumbar spine in 406 healthy subjects. Bone density and body height and weight were then related to the presence of the Cupid's bow contour. The Cupid's bow contour was compared with the fish vertebra of o

Idiopathic osteoporosis during pregnancy.

Among the idiopathic forms of osteoporosis, the one developing during pregnancy is the least common and scarcely studied. Poorly understood, it seems to stem from transient failure of calcitropic hormones and decreased osteoblast activity. A 25-year-old patient presented with coxofemoral pain during the last three months of pregnancy, followed by multiple vertebral compression fractures at postpartum. Laboratory, radiological, densitometric and histological examinations led to a diagnosis of idiopathic osteoporosis in pregnancy, once other causes of osteopenia had been ruled out. Bone densitom

Bone mineral status of women with Marfan syndrome.

PURPOSE: With effective surgical correction of vascular abnormalities, skeletal health is an important issue for patients with Marfan syndrome. Osteopenia has been radiographically described, yet no systematic evaluation of bone status has been published. The purpose of this study was to determine the bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) in women with Marfan syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen women, 37.2 +/- 7.3 years old, with Marfan syndrome were studied. Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to measure BMD at the lumbar spine (L2-L4), proximal femur, and total body in all sub

[Postmenopausal osteoporosis: how to detect women-at-risk?].

An increasing risk to fall with aging and postmenopausal bone loss are the two major determinants of osteoporotic fractures. Selective prevention of osteoporosis with estrogens only in women "at risk" is based upon evaluation in the early postmenopause of bone mass and potentially of bone loss (fast losers). In 75% of women, this evaluation cannot be properly done clinically; therefore measurements of bone mineral content with mineralometry and of some biochemical parameters should be carried out.

Root hard-tissue demineralization rate measured by 125I absorptiometry: comparison with lesion-depth measurements.

The aim of the present study was to compare demineralization of root hard tissue, monitored by 125I absorptiometry, with lesion-depth measurements under polarized light microscopy. The intact roots of ten human molars, which had not been exposed to the oral environment, were divided into 39 cementum/dentin blocks and exposed to a buffer solution of pH 4.5 containing 2.2 mmol/L calcium and inorganic phosphate. After demineralization for 3.5, 7, 14, and 21 days, transmission measurements by 125I absorptiometry were performed, and one block from each tooth was taken out of the solution for lesion

The radiographic detection of acute pulmonary oedema. A comparison of radiographic appearances, densitometry and lung water in dogs.

We have induced acute pulmonary oedema in upright anaesthetized dogs by increasing pulmonary microvascular permeability or by extracellular fluid volume overload in order to determine the sensitivity and specificity of the radiograph to the presence of abnormal lung water. Radiographs were taken before and after development of oedema. At the end of the experiment we removed the inflated lungs and froze them in liquid nitrogen and subsequently examined them macroscopically in the frozen state. The extravascular water/dry lung weight ratio was measured gravimetrically on seven portions of each l

Bone mineral density in women with cytotoxic-induced ovarian failure.

OBJECTIVE: Premature ovarian failure is associated with a reduction in bone mineral density. As survival rates following treatment for haematological malignancies improve, chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure is becoming more common. However, there are few data concerning the impact of this on bone mineral density (BMD). We have therefore measured the BMD in 33 women with ovarian failure following treatment with cytotoxic chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND DESIGN: We studied 33 women who received combination chemotherapy for Hodgkin's disease (n = 27), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (n = 4), sarcoma (n = 1)
