Cultural Risk and Protective Factors Associated With Sexual Assault Among Hispanic and Non-Hispanic White Women.

There is a paucity of research on sexual assault among Hispanic college women. Existing studies indicate that Hispanic college women, relative to non-Hispanic White women, report similar mental health sequelae following a sexual assault; thus, factors that protect or increase their risk are an area worthy of further investigation. Emerging research suggests that Latino cultural values, such as familism, social affiliation, and ethnic identity, may serve as protective factors for sexual assault among Hispanic college women, while acculturation with mainstream culture and perceived discriminatio…

The influence of identity on the prevalence and persistence of disordered eating and weight control behaviors in Mexican American college women.

Disordered eating behaviors are prevalent in Mexican-American college-enrolled women and contribute to compromised physical and psychological health. Although disordered eating behaviors are multi-determined, few studies have examined individual difference factors that contribute to disordered eating behaviors in Mexican women beyond acculturation. Evidence suggests that individual differences in the constellation of identities may be an important factor influencing the disordered eating behaviors. We hypothesized that individual differences in the collection of identities (self-schemas) incre…

Beyond words: a Reflexive Thematic analysis of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in immersive art experiences for cultural minorities in Germany.

Immigrants in Germany experience elevated rates of mental health challenges, often stemming from identity confusion and acculturative stress. Addressing the critical shortage of culturally sensitive mental health services, this study investigates the efficacy of integrating Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) into an immersive art exhibition as a low-intensity intervention. Ten young adult immigrants residing in Bremen participated in a four-station audiovisual experience designed to physically manifest ACT principles: Creative Hopelessness (process of recognizing controlling experiences l

Pre-migration Trauma Exposure and Psychological Distress for Asian American Immigrants: Linking the Pre- and Post-migration Contexts.

Drawing on the life course perspective and the assumptive world theory, this paper examines whether pre-migration trauma exposure is associated with psychological distress through post-migration perceived discrimination for Asian American immigrants. The study is based on cross-sectional data from the National Latino and Asian American Study (N = 1639). Structural equation model is used to estimate the relationship between pre-migration trauma, post-migration perceived discrimination, and psychological distress. Additional models are estimated to explore possible variations across ethnic group

Nativity status and sources of care assistance among elderly Mexican-origin adults.

Much like other racial/ethnic groups, Latinos are facing challenges to provide needed care to aging adults. Older Latinos underutilize nursing homes and home health care services and primarily rely on their families for assistance. While this general trend has been established, little attention has been paid to nativity differentials in patterns of caregiving for this segment of the aging population. The analyses are based on the latest wave (Wave 7) of the Hispanic Established Population for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly or H-EPESE (2010/2011) a sample of older Mexican-origin adults an
