Sensitive and selective methanol biosensor using two-enzyme cascade reaction and fluorometry for non-invasive assessment of intestinal bacteria activity.

For understanding the status of intestinal flora non-invasively, methanol (MeOH) has been attracting the attention. In this study, we have d … or. Although the use of FALDH resulted in the increase in the sensor output from aldehydes, such as acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, considering their concentrations in body fluids, the influence on the sensor output is limited. These results indicate that incorporating the cascade reaction into fluorometry enables enhanced biosensing of MeOH that will be useful …

Heterogeneous Interaction of Isopropanol with Natural Gobi Dust.

The adsorption of isopropanol on Gobi dust was investigated in the temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) ranges of 273-348 K and <0.01- … irradiation conditions (350-420 nm) in a photochemical reactor. Acetone, formaldehyde, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and water were identified as gas-phase products. Besides, the surface products were extracted and analyzed employing HPLC; Hydroxyacetone, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, and methylglyoxal were identified as surface products wh …

Electronic cigarette vaping with aged coils causes acute lung injury in mice.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have been used widely as an alternative to conventional cigarettes and have become particularly popular among young adults. A growing body of evidence has shown that e-cigarettes are associated with acute lung injury and adverse effects in multiple other organs. Previous studies showed that high emissions of aldehydes (formaldehyde and acetaldehyde) in aerosols were associated with increased usage of the same e-cigarette coils. However, the impact on lung function of using aged coils has not been reported. We investigated the relationship between coil age a…

Comprehensive measurement of VOCs in a liquor-production cluster of China: OVOCs dominance, atmospheric environmental and health impacts.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play a key role in atmospheric secondary formation. Unlike other high-emission industries, the characteris … ribution to daytime OVOCs, shifting species dominance from brewing-derived ethyl acetate to ambient acetaldehyde. The OBM-MCM simulation estimated that 70.38% of secondary acetaldehyde formation was associated with the OH-initiated oxidation of abundant ethanol. Alcohols, aldehydes, and organic acids jointly contributed 77.73% of the ozone formation potential. …

Chronic alcohol consumption aggravates acute kidney injury through integrin β1/JNK signaling.

Alcohol abuse is one of the major public health problems in the world and is associated with various health conditions. However, little is k … tubular epithelial cell apoptosis. The detrimental effect of EtOH feeding was primarily mediated by acetaldehyde, as its levels were increased in the blood, liver and kidney of female mice fed with ethanol. Acetaldehyde per se activated integrin β1/JNK signaling and induced tubular cell apoptosis in vitro. These findings suggest that alcohol consumption increa …

Copper Phosphinate Complexes as Molecular Precursors for Ethanol Dehydrogenation Catalysts.

Nowadays, the production of acetaldehyde heavily relies on the petroleum industry. Developing new catalysts for the ethanol dehydrogenation process that could sustainably substitute current acetaldehyde production methods is highly desired. Among the ethanol dehydrogenation catalysts, copper-based materials have been intensively studied. Unfortunately, the Cu-based catalysts suffer from sintering and coking, which lead to rapid deactivation with time-on-stream. Phosphorus doping has been demonstrated to diminish coking in methanol dehydrogenation, fluid catalytic cracking, and ethanol-to-olefi…

Comparative risk assessment of carcinogens in alcoholic beverages using the margin of exposure approach.

Alcoholic beverages have been classified as carcinogenic to humans. As alcoholic beverages are multicomponent mixtures containing several carcinogenic compounds, a quantitative approach is necessary to compare the risks. Fifteen known and suspected human carcinogens (acetaldehyde, acrylamide, aflatoxins, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethanol, ethyl carbamate, formaldehyde, furan, lead, 4-methylimidazole, N-nitrosodimethylamine, ochratoxin A and safrole) occurring in alcoholic beverages were identified based on monograph reviews by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The margin of exp…

Pathophysiology of alcoholic brain damage: synergistic effects of ethanol, thiamine deficiency and alcoholic liver disease.

Chronic alcoholism results in brain damage and dysfunction leading to a constellation of neuropsychiatric symptoms including cognitive dysfunction, the Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, alcoholic cerebellar degeneration and alcoholic dementia. That these clinically-defined entities result from independent pathophysiologic mechanisms is unlikely. Alcohol and its metabolite acetaldehyde are directly neurotoxic. Alcoholics are thiamine deficient as a result of poor diet, gastrointestinal disorders and liver disease. In addition, both alcohol and acetaldehyde have direct toxic effects on thiamine-relat…

Sequestration and Elimination of Toxic Aldehydes.

It is well-known that aldehydes resulting from the in vivo oxidation of primary alcohols are toxic. Here, we experimentally demonstrate in rat models that the dipeptide cysteinylglycine (CG), formed in vivo from its oxidized product, cystinyl-bis-glycine (CbG), will sequester acetaldehyde and isoamyl aldehyde, two model aldehydes resulting from the oxidation of ethanol and isoamyl alcohol, respectively, and excrete them in urine as their respective conjugation products with CG. These data suggest that a whole series of toxic aldehydes can be sequestered and detoxified by CG and may prevent the…

[Interactions between ethanol and histamine].

Histamine is biogenic amine that exerts the numerous important biological functions. Alcohol affect histamine action because those have common metabolizing enzymes--aldehyde dehydrogenase and aldehyde oxidase. Acetaldehyde can compete with aldehydes derived from histamine metabolism. Increased blood acetaldehyde resulting from abnormalities of alcohol dehydrogenase genotype in the Orientals population can release histamine from mast cells and basophiles, which induces the hypersensitivity reactions (flushing). These reactions may be blocked by antihistamine drugs. H2-receptor antagonists influ…

Blocking P2X4 purinergic receptor attenuates alcohol-related liver fibrosis by inhibiting hepatic stellate cell activation through PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.

Alcoholic liver fibrosis(ALF), as a liver disease caused by long-term alcoholism, attracts international attention. Activation of hepatic stellate cells is a key step in the development of alcoholic-associated liver fibrosis. Increasing studies have shown that P2X4 receptor, as a component of purinoceptor family in adenosine pathway, plays an important role in numerous liver diseases. In this study, it was found that the expression of P2X4 receptor was significantly increased in the mouse liver fibrosis model fed with ethanol plus CCL4 and in the HSC-T6 cell model stimulated by acetaldehyde. I…

Role of residual solvents in the formation of volatile compounds after radiosterilisation of cefotaxime.

Radiation sterilisation is a promising method to sterilise pharmaceutical products. However, this process is accompanied by a modification o … the presence of residual solvents which are volatile impurities already present before irradiation. Acetaldehyde directly came from impurities but the appearance of esters and acetaldehyde O-methyloxime was due to the presence of both cefotaxime and residual solvents together.
