Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), widely adopted in hydraulic fracturing monitoring, continuously measures sound from perforation holes due to fluid flow through the perforation holes during fracturing treatment. DAS has the potential to monitor perforation Tulsa, OK 74136erosion, a phenomenon of increasing perforation size due to sand (referred to as proppant) injection during treatment. Because the sound generated by fluid flow at a perforation hole is negatively related to the perforation diameter, by detecting the decay of the DAS signal, the perforation erosion level can be estimated, w

For cochlear-implant users with near-normal contralateral hearing, a mismatch between the frequency-to-place mapping in the two ears could produce a suboptimal performance. This study assesses tonotopic matches via binaural interactions. Dynamic interaural time-difference sensitivity was measured using bandpass-filtered pulse trains at different rates in the acoustic and implanted ear, creating binaural envelope beats. Sensitivity to beats should peak when the same tonotopic region is stimulated in both ears. All nine participants detected dynamic interaural timing differences and demonstrated

The acoustic middle ear muscle reflex thresholds towards white noise and fast sequences of clicks were determined in 46 normal-hearing young adults using electronic averaging. For white noise the thresholds were normally distributed around an average value of 72.7 dB SPL. With sequences of clicks the threshold depended above all on the click repetition rate within each stimulus sequence. When the repetition was 128/sec the threshold distribution was almost normal around an average value of 73.9 dB SPL. For the individual test subject there was good correlation between the white noise and the c

While investigating the possibilities of electrically induced hearing in cases of profound deafness, we observed that very often an appropriate stimulation of the cochlea could result in tinnitus cancellation. We present here a progress report on that phenomenon, including 15 subjects. Such a cancellation was restricted to tinnitus subjectively localized in the ear under test, we observed no effect on noises localized in the other ear, or centrally. This suppression occurred so long as the cochlea was stimulated and stopped when the stimulation ceased. This phenomenon was very reproducible and

Speech perception is thought to rely on a cortical feedforward serial transformation of acoustic into linguistic representations. Using intracranial recordings across the entire human auditory cortex, electrocortical stimulation, and surgical ablation, we show that cortical processing across areas is not consistent with a serial hierarchical organization. Instead, response latency and receptive field analyses demonstrate parallel and distinct information processing in the primary and nonprimary auditory cortices. This functional dissociation was also observed where stimulation of the primary a

In rats chronically implanted with cannulae into one lateral cerebral ventricle and recording electrodes onto the fronto-parietal cortex, the effects of systemic or intraventricular administration of the nitric oxide (NO) synthesis inhibitor, N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), on electrocortical (ECoG) arousal response evoked by sound stimulation were studied. In control animals, a single acoustic stimulation (80 dB for 15 s) produced a significant decrease in ECoG total voltage power lasting approximately 25 s. No tolerance developed after repeating the same sound stimulation at …

The results are presented from a consecutive operative series of 62 acoustic neuromas in 60 patients following the introduction of improved neurophysiological monitoring techniques. Twenty-two patients had usable preoperative hearing. Thirty tumours were less than 2.5 cm diameter and 32 greater in size. Operation was via a 3-4-cm diameter retromastoid craniectomy. The internal auditory meatus was opened by an ENT surgeon (RM) using a drill and the facial nerve identified by stimulation. The tumour was then centrally evacuated by a neurosurgeon (MT/HC) using an ultrasonic aspirator, and the thi

Measuring the electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold (eSRT) with electromyography (EMG) of the stapedius muscle (SM) may offer an ob … anterior approach. Overall, electrical stimulation elicited SM-EMG responses in 8 patients, whereas acoustic stimulation elicited responses in only 3 patients. When eSRT measurement via SM-EMG was possible, stimulation thresholds were equal or slightly lower than thresholds identified visually in 85% of all SR measurements. SM-EMG-based eSRT appears to be a viable app …

The mechanisms and brain circuitry that render genetically epilepsy-prone rats (GEPRs) susceptible to acoustically induced seizures are not completely known. The present study explores the neuroanatomy of acoustically induced seizures by immunohistochemical analysis of the proto-oncoprotein fos after intense acoustic stimulation (AS) with and without seizures. Acoustic stimulation induced tonic convulsions in GEPR-9s, but not in control rats. Locations of brain nuclei showing fos-like immunoreactive (FLI) neurons following AS with and without seizures were mapped. Semiquantitative methods were…

Conclusion Cochlea can be directly excited by fluid (soft-tissue) stimulation. Objective To determine whether there is no difference in auditory-nerve-brainstem evoked response (ABR) thresholds to fluid stimulation between normal and animal models of post radical-mastoidectomy, as seen in a previous human study. Background It has been shown in humans that hearing can be elicited with stimulation to fluid in the external auditory meatus (EAM), and radical-mastoidectomy cavity. These groups differed in age, initial hearing, and drilling exposure. To overcome this difference, experiments were con

BACKGROUND: More than ever before the neonatal care besides the medical and nursing work has to been balanced between protecting the child against over extension due to the concept of "minimal handling" and on the other hand the necessary fostering of the young patients psychic and sensomotor development during the long stationary treatment. In addition to known approaches of auditive stimulation as receptive music therapy a concept of active music therapy methods based on the Nordoff/Robbins creative music-therapy (University Witten/Herdecke) is presented in a case-report.

Abnormal neuronal synchrony plays an important role in a number of brain diseases. To specifically counteract abnormal neuronal synchrony by desynchronization, Coordinated Reset (CR) stimulation, a spatiotemporally patterned stimulation technique, was designed with computational means. In neuronal networks with spike timing-dependent plasticity CR stimulation causes a decrease of synaptic weights and finally anti-kindling, i.e., unlearning of abnormally strong synaptic connectivity and abnormal neuronal synchrony. Long-lasting desynchronizing aftereffects of CR stimulation have been verified i

Epithelial cells of the inner ear coordinate their ion transport activity through a number of mechanisms. One important mechanism is the autocrine and paracrine signaling among neighboring cells in the ear via nucleotides, such as adenosine, ATP and UTP. This review summarizes observations on the release, detection and degradation of nucleotides by epithelial cells of the inner ear. Purinergic signaling is thought to be important for endolymph ion homeostasis and for protection from acoustic over-stimulation.

The stereocilia of the inner ear sensory cells contain the actin-binding protein radixin, encoded by RDX. Radixin is important for hearing but remains functionally obscure. To determine how radixin influences hearing sensitivity, we used a custom rapid imaging technique to visualize stereocilia motion while measuring electrical potential amplitudes during acoustic stimulation. Radixin inhibition decreased sound-evoked electrical potentials. Other functional measures, including electrically induced sensory cell motility and sound-evoked stereocilia deflections, showed a minor amplitude increase…

Previous studies regarding developmental stuttering (DS) suggest that motor neural networks are strongly affected. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to investigate neural activation of the primary motor cortex in DS during movement execution, and the influence of muscle representations involved in movements on "surrounding" ones. TMS was applied over the contralateral abductor digiti minimi (ADM) motor representation, at rest and during the movement of homologue first dorsal interosseous muscles (tonic contraction, phasic movements cued by acoustic signalling, and "self-paced" m
