Ocular biology and diseases of Old World chameleons.

For centuries, Old World chameleons (Chamaeleonidae family) have been collected and studied for their unusual biology and features, which are unique among lizards and other vertebrates. They have advanced mechanisms for capturing prey with their tongue, but have a primitive mechanism for hearing. Chameleons have the most studied ocular system because of their highly adapted yet primitive biology. This system has specific features that are susceptible to new diseases, which may require novel therapies.

Electrospun nanofibers - A promising solid in-situ gelling alternative for ocular drug delivery.

A serious problem of the treatment of eye diseases is the very short residence time of the drug. The majority of the drug is cleared within few seconds due to the poor capability of the eye to accommodate additional liquids. We developed a new ocular drug delivery system, which is applied in dry form and forms immediately a gel after administration. The system is based on gellan gum/pullulan electrospun nanofibers. The rheological behavior of the spinning solution was investigated followed by further characterization of the in situ formed gel. Three-dimensional X-ray imaging with nanometric re

The human isolate of Brachiola algerae (Phylum Microspora): development in SCID mice and description of its fine structure features.

Ocular, peroral, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous inoculation of severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice with spores of the human isolate (CDC: V404) of Brachiola algerae (syn. Nosema algerae) (Phylum Microspora) revealed that the microsporidium develops in viscera of the immunodeficient mouse host, but only after the ocular administration of spores. It is hypothesized that the physico-chemical milieu of the conjunctiva and cornea helped to adapt the originally 'poikilothermic microsporidian' to the conditions within the homoiothermic organism. Ocular application of spores

Pathological sweating and flushing accompanying the trigeminal lacrimal reflex in patients with cluster headache and in patients with a confirmed site of cervical sympathetic deficit. Evidence for parasympathetic cross-innervation.

Electrodermal responses (as a measure of sweating) and vascular responses to irritation of the eye were investigated in 11 cluster headache patients and, for comparison, in another 24 patients with a confirmed site of lesion in the cervical sympathetic pathway. Seven of the cluster headache patients had ocular and thermoregulatory signs of a postganglionic sympathetic lesion. In these patients, and in six of seven patients with a postganglionic sympathetic lesion from some other cause, the electrodermal response to ocular stimulation was far greater on the denervated side of the forehead than

The Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening-Child (VOMS-C) tool for concussion evaluation in 5- to 9-year-old pediatric patients: preliminary evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular and ocular motor dysfunction occurs in an estimated 60%-90% of concussion patients. The Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) tool is validated for use in concussion patients older than 9 years. The goal of the current study was to adapt the current VOMS tool for a pediatric sample of children aged 5-9 years and establish its clinical utility in this patient population. METHODS: In this case-control study, 80 symptomatic concussion patients (n = 33 [41%] female) aged 5-9 years (mean age 7.40 ± 1.09 years) and 40 (n = 18 [45%] female) age- and sex-matched uninjured con

Zebrafish dscaml1 Deficiency Impairs Retinal Patterning and Oculomotor Function.

Down syndrome cell adhesion molecules (dscam and dscaml1) are essential regulators of neural circuit assembly, but their roles in vertebrate neural circuit function are still mostly unexplored. We investigated the functional consequences of dscaml1 deficiency in the larval zebrafish (sexually undifferentiated) oculomotor system, where behavior, circuit function, and neuronal activity can be precisely quantified. Genetic perturbation of dscaml1 resulted in deficits in retinal patterning and light adaptation, consistent with its known roles in mammals. Oculomotor analyses revealed specific defic

Electroretinographic changes and choroidal defects in a case of central retinal artery occlusion.

A 62-year-old white woman with hypertensive diabetes had central retinal artery occlusion of her right eye. Serial electroretinographic (ERG) studies demonstrated reversible changes in the scotopic components but permanent reduction of the photopic b-wave. Serial simultaneous fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic studies demonstrated a perfusion defect in the choroid involving part of the macula which subsided after reopening the retinal circulation. Differential hypoxic susceptibility of the ERG photopic and scotopic b-waves was demonstrated, and changes in the patient's retinal tiss

Stage- and compartment-specific remodeling of autophagy and selective mitophagy in glaucoma: from aqueous outflow dysfunction to retinal ganglion cell neurodegeneration.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness and is increasingly understood as a chronic neurodegenerative disorder rather than a disease explained solely by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Although IOP lowering remains the cornerstone of treatment, many patients continue to progress despite apparently adequate pressure control, indicating that additional mechanisms shape retinal ganglion cell (RGC) vulnerability and disease course. Among these, autophagy and mitophagy have emerged as central regulators of cellular stress adaptation in both anterior and posterior ocul

X-linked retinitis pigmentosa.

Of 107 consecutive patients with genetically-determined retinitis pigmentosa, 23 were provisionally diagnosed as having inherited the disease in an X-linked fashion. 42 affected males and 61 females were examined, and from the data obtained the following conclusions were drawn: (1) X-linked retinitis pigmentosa exists and is distinct from choroideremia. (2) In contrast to the results of previous surveys, X-linked retinitis pigmentosa is a common form of this disease and over 20 per cent. of retinitis pigmentosa is probably transmitted in an X-linked manner. (3) (a) In contradistinction to the

Understanding Immune Responses to Surgical Transplant Procedures in Stevens Johnsons Syndrome Patients.

Stevens Johnsons syndrome (SJS) is a mucocutaneous disorder caused by an autoimmune response most commonly to medications. Unless it is properly managed in the acute setting, this entity can affect the ocular surface causing chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis with limbal stem cell deficiency and lid anomalies which ultimately result in corneal opacities that may limit patients' visual acuity. When this stage is reached, some patients might need to undergo some form of corneal and/or limbal stem cell transplantation that exposes an already sensitized immune system to a new alloantigen. While th

The impact of pediatric vision disorders in adulthood.

In addition to refractive errors such as myopia and astigmatism, ocular disorders that occur in infants, toddlers, and children may present lifelong problems for the child. Conditions such as strabismus, amblyopia, and retinopathy of prematurity may require adaptations in adulthood. In addition, vision disorders that occur in childhood may manifest as problems well into adulthood. When visual impairment is present, there may be further effects on overall health, self-perception, educational attainment, job choices, and a number of other social factors.

A novel device for assessing dark adaptation in field settings.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant dark adaptation is common to many ocular diseases and pathophysiological conditions, including vitamin A deficiency, cardiopulmonary diseases, and hypoxia. Scotopic vision and pupillary responsiveness have typically been measured using subjective, time-consuming methods. Existing techniques are particularly challenging for use in developing country settings, where vitamin A deficiency remains a major public health problem. Our aim was design a compact, low cost, and easily operated device to assess dark adaptation in the field. METHODS: The Portable Field Dark Adaptometer

H-VISTA Immunohistochemistry Score Is Associated with Advanced Stages in Cutaneous and Ocular Melanoma.

Melanoma represents a public health issue. One of the biggest goals of current research is to develop new therapeutic options for patients affected by this aggressive tumor. We conducted a retrospective study including 105 patients diagnosed with cutaneous and ocular melanoma, with stages varying from pT1a to pT4b and pT4e, respectively, and we performed immunohistochemistry reactions with the new potential prognostic marker, VISTA (V-domain Ig suppressor of T cell activation). We quantified the expression by applying the H-score adapted for VISTA and divided the patients, based on the median

Accommodation microfluctuation in individuals with mTBI and the potential effect of chromatic filter on this parameter.

Individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) exhibit significant accommodative abnormalities. Accommodation microfluctuation (MFs) plays an important role in the accommodation steady-state control. This study was set to investigate the characteristics of the MFs in mTBI subjects and whether chromatic filter (CF) or neutral density filter (ND) would impact these parameters. 54 healthy and 30 mTBI young adults participated. Tonic accommodation (TA) was recorded in complete darkness after dark adaptation. The steady-state accommodation response (AR) for various stimulus distances was recor

[Perception of objects and scenes in age-related macular degeneration].

Vision related quality of life questionnaires suggest that patients with AMD exhibit difficulties in finding objects and in mobility. In the natural environment, objects seldom appear in isolation. They appear in a spatial context which may obscure them in part or place obstacles in the patient's path. Furthermore, the luminance of a natural scene varies as a function of the hour of the day and the light source, which can alter perception. This study aims to evaluate recognition of objects and natural scenes by patients with AMD, by using photographs of such scenes. Studies demonstrate that AM

Reversible and controlled peripheral vestibular loss by continuous infusion of ropivacaine (Narop) into the round window niche of rats.

This paper describes a method for achieving a peripheral vestibular blockade in rats by instillation of local anaesthetics over the round window membrane through a permanently implanted cannula. Being rapidly reversible, the effect of the anaesthetic drug is easily controlled by a single continuous infusion, which can be repeated at any time. The method offers a unique opportunity to study the consequence of single or repeated transient vestibular loss without any use of general anaesthetics, which may be a severe confounding factor. Such studies might shed light on balance disorders related t

Larval and adult eye of the western rock lobster (Panulirus longipes).

A number of differences exists between the compound eyes of larval and adult rock lobsters, Panulirus longipes. The larval eye more closely resembles the apposition type of compound eye, in which retinula cells and rhabdom lie immediately below the cone cells. The adult eye, on the other hand, is a typical clear-zone photoreceptor in which cones and retinula cell layers are separated by a wide transparent region. The rhabdom of the larval eye, if cut longitudinally, exhibits a "banded" structure over its entire length; in the adult the banded part is confined to the distal end, and the rhabdom
