Increasing Rumen Microbial Diversity in Goats Favours the Adaptation to High-Concentrate Diets With Minor Effects on Feed Utilization.

Evolution has enabled ruminants to develop a complex rumen microbiota that aids in the digestion of fibrous feeds. This study examines whether promoting a highly diverse rumen microbiota during early life continues to offer long-term benefits in modern dairy production systems, where young ruminants are reared without exposure to adult ruminants and are fed high-concentrate diets. A total of 36 newborn goat kids were divided in 4 groups. During the first 10 weeks of age, animals were daily inoculated with autoclaved rumen fluid (AUT), fresh rumen fluid from adult goats fed forage (RFF), or con

Cannabimimetic phytochemicals in the diet - an evolutionary link to food selection and metabolic stress adaptation?

UNLABELLED: The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a major lipid signalling network that plays important pro-homeostatic (allostatic) roles not only in the nervous system but also in peripheral organs. There is increasing evidence that there is a dietary component in the modulation of the ECS. Cannabinoid receptors in hominids co-evolved with diet, and the ECS constitutes a feedback loop for food selection and energy metabolism. Here, it is postulated that the mismatch of ancient lipid genes of hunter-gatherers and pastoralists with the high-carbohydrate diet introduced by agriculture could be co

Adrenal cortical and chromaffin stem cells: Is there a common progeny related to stress adaptation?

The adrenal gland is a highly plastic organ with the capacity to adapt the body homeostasis to different physiological needs. The existence of stem-like cells in the adrenal cortex has been revealed in many studies. Recently, we identified and characterized in mice a pool of glia-like multipotent Nestin-expressing progenitor cells, which contributes to the plasticity of the adrenal medulla. In addition, we found that these Nestin progenitors are actively involved in the stress response by giving rise to chromaffin cells. Interestingly, we also observed a Nestin-GFP-positive cell population loc

Blowing bubbles: an aquatic adaptation that risks protection of the respiratory tract in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae).

Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) have developed extensive protective barriers to exclude water or food from the respiratory tract, including valvular nostrils, an intranarial elongated larynx, and a sphincteric soft palate. A barrier breach can be lethal, as asphyxiation may occur from incursions of water (drowning) or food (choking). Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), however, exhibit a possibly unique and paradoxical behavior concerning respiratory protection: they release a "bubble cloud" (a cluster of tiny bubbles) underwater from the mouth. How they do this remains uncle

Hormesis: an adaptive expectation with emphasis on ionizing radiation.

Non-linear fitness gradients with maxima between extremes are expected for any environmental variable to which free-living populations are exposed. For exceedingly toxic agents, including ionizing radiation, such deviations from linearity are close to zero exposure and are conventionally called hormesis. Accordingly, hormesis is an extreme version of the non-linear fitness gradients for general environmental stresses such as temperature fluctuations, for which maximum fitness occurs at the moderate temperature fluctuations to which free-living populations are most commonly exposed. Some metabo

[Disorders developing under combined exposure to ionizing radiation and stress].

The combined influence of gamma-radiation in a dose of 1 Gy and restriction stress was studied in experiments on 62 rats. The severity of gastric mucosal erosive and ulcerative lesions, the rate of lipid peroxidation, and hepatic homogenate heat generation were determined by microcalorimetry. The developing disorders were corrected by administering sodium succinate. Animal radiation resulted in modified stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions which appeared as increases in the total number of ulcerations. The use of sodium succinate was followed by less severity of erosive and ulcerative gastri

Adaptive genomic signatures of globally invasive populations of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti.

In the arboviral vector Aedes aegypti, adaptation to anthropogenic environments has led to a major evolutionary shift separating the domestic Aedes aegypti aegypti (Aaa) ecotype from the wild Aedes aegypti formosus (Aaf) ecotype. Aaa mosquitoes are distributed globally and have higher vectorial capacity than Aaf, which remained in Africa. Despite the evolutionary and epidemiological relevance of this separation, inconsistent morphological data and a complex population structure have hindered the identification of genomic signals distinguishing the two ecotypes. Here we assessed the corresponde

Legitimising fatigue after breast-cancer treatment.

This study aimed to explore the experience of women living with fatigue following chemotherapy for breast cancer. Six focus groups were conducted (n=40); all participants had taken part in a multi-site acupuncture trial. There were three to seven people per focus group. Additionally, two people attended one-to-one interviews and four people provided written responses to the trigger questions. The audiotapes from these sessions were transcribed and analysed using a thematic approach. Participants raised concerns about fatigue possibly being a symptom of the cancer coming back or a sign of senil

Field physiology in the aquatic realm: ecological energetics and diving behavior provide context for elucidating patterns and deviations.

Comparative physiology has developed a rich understanding of the physiological adaptations of organisms, from microbes to megafauna. Despite extreme differences in size and a diversity of habitats, general patterns are observed in their physiological adaptations. Yet, many organisms deviate from the general patterns, providing an opportunity to understand the importance of ecology in determining the evolution of unusual adaptations. Aquatic air-breathing vertebrates provide unique study systems in which the interplay between ecology, physiology and behavior is most evident. They must perform b

Multi-Organ Comparative Transcriptomic Study on Short-Term and Long-Term Hypoxia Adaptation in Cattle.

Highland Tibetan cattle have evolved unique hypoxic adaptation capabilities from their lowland ancestors; however, the mechanisms that distinguish short-term acclimatization from long-term genetic adaptation remain poorly understood. In this study, we integrated hematological assays and multi-organ transcriptomic analyses across three groups: highland Tibetan cattle (long-term adaptation), highland-acclimatized Holsteins (short-term acclimatization), and lowland Holsteins (controls). Hematologically, highland-acclimatized Holsteins displayed elevated red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, and

Adaptation to Leftward Shifting Prisms Alters Motor Interhemispheric Inhibition.

Adaptation to rightward shifting prisms (rightward prism adaptation, RPA) ameliorates neglect symptoms in patients while adaptation to leftward shifting prisms (leftward prism adaptation, LPA) induces neglect-like behaviors in healthy subjects. It has been hypothesized that prism adaptation (PA) modulates interhemispheric balance between the parietal cortices by inhibiting the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) contralateral to the prismatic deviation, but PA's effects on interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) have not been directly investigated. Since there are hyper-excitable connections between the

Differential roles of Scj1 and Djp1, two DnaJ homologs, in virulence, cell wall integrity, and multi-stress tolerance of Beauveria bassiana.

Enhancing environmental adaptability and virulence is crucial for improving the biocontrol potential of Beauveria bassiana, a filamentous entomopathogen widely employed for biological pest control in agriculture and forestry. It was reported that DnaJ proteins play important and distinct roles in fungal growth, conidiation, environmental adaptation, and virulence. However, apart from Mas5 and Mdj1, the functions of other DnaJ proteins in B. bassiana remain largely unexplored. In this study, the functions of two DnaJ homologs of Scj1 and Djp1 in B. bassiana were characterized through multi-phen

Armillaria mellea sensu lato and related Armillaria species at the crossroads of taxonomy, ecology, and biotechnology: a multi-dimensional review.

Armillaria mellea (Vahl) P. Kumm. and related species in the A. mellea sensu lato complex are ecologically important basidiomycetes and key fungal partners in the cultivation of the fully mycoheterotrophic orchid Gastrodia elata. Because many historical reports labelled isolates simply as A. mellea before modern molecular delimitation, biological and applied conclusions require careful taxonomic interpretation. This critical review synthesizes literature on taxonomy, G. elata symbiosis, stress adaptation, selenium enrichment and applications. This review highlights four key findings. First, sp

Suaeda salsa: stress adaptation, soil restoration, and agronomic potential in salt-affected environments.

Suaeda salsa is a widely distributed annual euhalophyte that thrives under both saline and saline-alkaline conditions, making it a valuable model for understanding plant salt-tolerance mechanisms and a promising resource for saline agriculture. However, the integrated understanding of how its physiological, biochemical, molecular, and microbial responses collectively support salt tolerance remains fragmented. Moreover, how these traits contribute to soil restoration and agricultural use remains insufficiently understood. S. salsa achieves optimal growth at 200 mM NaCl and tolerates salinity up

Proteomic Evidence for Biofilm-Mediated Copper Stress Adaptation in Oleidesulfovibrio alaskensis G20.

Copper (Cu) is an essential cofactor for enzymes regulating key metabolic processes; however, excess Cu can inhibit bacterial growth. The ability of Oleidesulfovibrio alaskensis G20 (OA G20) to survive under heavy metal stress is compelling. Our previous study on OA G20 exposed to Cu suggests that bacteria might use biofilm formation to adapt to high levels of toxic metal ions. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying this adaptation, we performed a comparative proteomic analysis of OA G20 stress-induced biofilms (30 μM Cu) versus control (no Cu) and their respective extracellular frac

Autophagy in the Regulation of Placental Development: From Trophoblast Differentiation to Metabolic Stress Adaptation.

Successful pregnancy depends on precise placental development, where trophoblast differentiation, syncytialization, invasion, and adaptation to metabolic stress are critical. Autophagy, a lysosome-mediated degradation pathway, has emerged as an important regulator of cellular homeostasis, yet its integrated role in trophoblast fate and functions has not been comprehensively summarised. This review synthesises current evidence on autophagy's functions throughout placentation, from trophoblast differentiation to syncytialization and extravillous trophoblast invasion. We examine how autophagy ena

Aneuploidy promotes transient stress adaptation and metabolic flexibility in the human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.

Aneuploidy enables adaptive responses that facilitate stress resistance and persistence under changing conditions in eukaryotes ranging from yeasts and fungi to human cancer cells. Aspergillus fumigatus is a soil-resident mold and the most prevalent etiologic agent of invasive fungal infections globally. Invasive aspergillosis has an alarmingly high mortality rate, and fungal persistence in the infection microenvironment often renders treatments unsuccessful. Treatment failures can result from innate or acquired antifungal drug resistance and from fungal adaptation to other stresses encountere
