Research confirms that children and adolescents are experiencing significant anxiety and depression during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Adolescents may be at greater risk, particularly females. Social isolation, loneliness, lack of physical exercise, and family stress may contribute to these problems. Children who feel unsafe with regards to coronavirus disease 2019 may be more likely to experience somatic symptoms, depression, and anxiety. Parental stress and mental health problems may put children at an increased risk for maltreatment. Medical and behavioral health professionals sh

Background: Women living with HIV experience severe HIV-related stress in sub-Saharan Africa. But evidence shows that individuals with high levels of the psychological hardiness characteristic who accept stressful situations as meaningful experience may withstand psychological stress. However, the literature on associations between hardiness and HIV-related stress among women living with HIV is scarce. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between hardiness and HIV-related stress among women living with HIV in Niger State, Nigeria. Methods: This study used a cross-sect

OBJECTIVE: Psychotic episodes have long been conceptualized as inevitable incidents triggered by endogenous biological impairments. It is now well-accepted that the ability of an individual to deal with social and environmental challenges plays an important role in regard to whether or not a vulnerability to psychosis translates into symptoms. For the present study, we examined symptomatic correlates of dysfunctional coping in psychosis and aimed to elucidate a profile of coping strategies that distinguishes patients with schizophrenia from those with depression.
METHOD: The newly devised Mal

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can result in significant changes in psychological functioning. Depression and cognitive deficits are commonly present. In addition personality changes have been described. A growing body of research is showing negative impact of psychological stress on disease course. Our study focused on the profile of depression, capacity for coping with stress and experienced distress in patients with MS measured by a performance based method for personality assessment-the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM). We included 95 patients with MS and 44 healthy controls. RIM was used with all

BACKGROUND: PTSD been recognized as a major problem in public health and has attracted an ever-growing scientific, epistemological and clinical interest. On the other side, PTSD is one of the most controversial diagnosis in psychiatry as well as in medicine in general.
METHOD: We have made an overview of available literature on PTSD to identify what is our real knowledge about PTSD with all dilemmas, controversies and challenges.
RESULTS: We have various options as to how to evaluate, explain and describe PTSD and other trauma-related mental and somatic disorders. In this paper we compiled a

Survival-related clinical reports are abundantly found in the works of classical, object-relational, and self psychological writers, but are underrepresented in major theoretical formulations on anxiety. Fears of being overwhelmed, merged, penetrated, fragmented, and destroyed, as contents of unconscious and conscious fantasies, are regularly interrelated with the typical dangers. Fifteen preliminary propositions invite closer study of such apprehensions and provide definitional components. Annihilation anxieties are triggered by survival threat; are found early but can be engendered throughou

Formulated from a cognitive frame of reference, psychodynamic therapy can be viewed as acting on one of the three aspects (feeling, thought, action) in order to influence or change the client's action and thought schemes. In this paper the consequences of the interaction of cognition and emotion for psychotherapeutic practice with adolescents are explored. Knowledge of cognitive development is supposed to be important for the therapist because, from Piaget's viewpoint, the structures of affect are cognitive structures. Moreover a great variability exists in cognitive development between adoles

Cervical dystonia (CD) is a movement disorder which causes sustained muscle contractions in the neck leading to abnormal postures and repetitive movements. As it is a highly visible condition, people with CD can experience stigma, which may lead to unhelpful coping strategies and increased psychological distress. This study investigated whether adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies mediate the relationship between stigma and psychological outcomes in people with CD. A total of 114 adults with CD completed measures of stigma, coping, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), psychological di

Rapid urbanization and unequal urban-rural development have driven large-scale internal migration in low- and middle-income countries, placing internal migrant children at increased risk for psychological distress and sociocultural marginalization. Although schools are critical settings for prevention, targeted interventions that support migrant students' psychological ("feeling well") and sociocultural ("doing well") adaptation remain limited. Mindfulness training shows promise for youth mental health, yet its feasibility among socioeconomically disadvantaged migrant youth remains underexamin

Despite the known impacts of weaning on animal health, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear, particularly how psychological and nutritional stress differentially affect gut health and immune function over time. This study hypothesized that early weaning exerts distinct short- and long-term effects on lamb stress physiology, immunity, and gut health, mediated by specific molecular pathways. Twelve pairs of full-sibling male Hu sheep lambs were assigned to control (CON) or early-weaned (EW) groups. Plasma stress/immune markers were dynamically monitored, and intestinal morphology,

This cross-sectional study investigated the effect of caregivers' care (n = 100) burden and psychological resilience on the psychosocial adjustment of patients (n = 100) with open heart surgery. Patients had poor psychosocial adjustment. Caregivers who felt incompetent in providing care had a higher care burden and a lower psychological resilience than those who did not. In addition, patients whose caregivers had higher resilience and lower burden of care had better psychosocial adjustment. The results of this study compellingly demonstrate the importance and necessity of supportive and preven

Not since the Korean War have the Canadian Forces engaged in combat missions like those in Afghanistan. Combat, asymmetric warfare, violent insurgency and the constant threat of improvised explosive devices all contribute to the psychological stressors experienced by Canadian soldiers. Mental health teams deployed with the soldiers and provided assessment, treatment and education. Lessons learned included refuting the myth that all psychological disorders would be related to trauma; confirming that most patients do well after exposure to trauma; confirming that treating disorders in a war zone

Actual or potentially threatening stimuli in the external environment (i.e., psychological stressors) trigger highly coordinated defensive behavioral responses that are accompanied by appropriate autonomic and respiratory changes. As discussed in this review, several brain regions and pathways have major roles in subserving the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to threatening stimuli, which may vary from relatively mild acute arousing stimuli to more prolonged life-threatening stimuli. One key region is the dorsomedial hypothalamus, which receives inputs from the cortex, amygdala, and o

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an escalating public health concern in low- and middle-income countries like Pakistan, with rising prevalence among the aging population. While global research has increasingly addressed the psychological dimensions of AD, Pakistan's contribution remains limited. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, examines the scope and focus of psychological research on AD in Pakistan. Eleven empirical studies published between 2014 and 2025 were included, revealing key themes such as caregiver burden, sociocultural influences, assessment tools,

A follow-up, with special reference to social adaptation and subjective symptoms, was done on 95 persons with congenital club feet treated in Sweden 1940-1945. At an age of 27-33 years the individuals managed themselves well and in spite of physical as well as psychological handicap they deviated relatively only a little from the normal population as regards work, sports and other social adaptibility.

49 participants, adapted to using contact lenses, completed a battery of psychological tests to examine differences between persons who were successful in wearing monovision lenses for presbyopia and those who were unsuccessful. Although visual performance and requirements strongly affect participants' satisfaction with monovision lenses, personality characteristics and visual processing styles appear to in fluence the percentage of full-time wear. Of the participants, 41% (20 of 49) ultimately rejected monovision for a variety of both visual and psychological reasons. Sex differences were evi

INTRODUCTION: Psychological well-being is crucial for nursing students, who often face academic and clinical stressors that disrupt their sleep patterns. Insomnia severity, sleep hygiene, and sleep locus of control are key sleep-related factors that potentially influence mental health. However, the combined effects of these factors on psychological well-being remain underexplored, particularly among Indian nursing students.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 418 nursing students from two nursing colleges in Northwestern India. Data were collected using validated i

The growing burden of aging-related disease and functional decline across Europe underscores the urgent need to optimize aging trajectories rather than simply extend lifespan. Achieving this goal requires identifying modifiable determinants that shape biological, psychological, and functional aging across the life course. Satisfaction with life (SWL) is emerging as one such integrative factor, linking adaptive capacity, resilience, and long-term healthspan outcomes. In this conceptual and translational paper, we integrate evidence from geroscience, psychology, and occupational health to positi

INTRODUCTION: Critically ill patients experience high levels of psychological distress; however, the recognition and management of psychological distress in the intensive care unit (ICU) remain underexplored. A concept analysis of psychological distress exists for some patient populations but none in critical care. The aim of this concept analysis was to clarify the contextual character of psychological distress in ICU patients, thereby improving recognition and management practices.
METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary approach aided a deeper examination of psychological distress in the critical c

PURPOSE: Uncertainty in the context of advanced cancer diagnosis often incurs significant psychological distress. The aims were to evaluate the incidence of psychological distress upon diagnosis of advanced cancer and to analyze whether the relationship between illness uncertainty and psychological distress can be mediated by coping strategies.
METHODS: A multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in 15 medical oncology departments across Spain. Individuals with unresectable advanced cancer completed questionnaires on uncertainty (Michel Uncertainty of Illness Scale, coping
