The actions of adenosine in modulating amygdala kindling were examined using the stable adenosine analog 5'-N'-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA) and caffeine, an adenosine antagonist. Mycobacterium leprae obtained from randomly selected lepromatous leprosy patients were used to evaluate the ATP assay technique for detecting viability of these cells. The findings were further confirmed by the standard mouse foot pad technique. Abnormalities of adenosine deaminase, a critical enzyme of the purine salvage pathway, have been reported in association with immune dysfunction, acute leukemia, and hereditary hemolytic anemia. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity was determined in peripheral blood T cells, thymocytes and blasts of 42 acute leukemia patients. Thymocytes had higher ADA activity than mature peripheral blood T cells. B ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) cells had significantly lower activity compared with T ALL and non-B, non-T cells.
