Neighborhood, family, and subjective socioeconomic status: How do they relate to adolescent health?

This study investigated the role of neighborhood, family, and individual subjective socioeconomic status (SES) in predicting adolescent physical health and psychological characteristics. Three hundred fifteen adolescents completed assessments of blood pressure, cortisol, and body mass index (BMI). Results revealed that lower neighborhood SES was associated with higher BMI and lower basal cortisol levels and that these effects persisted after controlling for family SES. Both family SES and neighborhood SES predicted negative psychological characteristics and experiences such as hostility and di

The adolescent varicocele: diagnostic and treatment patterns of pediatricians. A public health concern?

PURPOSE: We determine whether practice patterns of pediatricians contribute to delays in diagnosing and treating adolescents with varicoceles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey consisting of 11 multiple-choice questions was mailed to 5,000 pediatricians selected by zip code in New York State. Zip codes were chosen to reflect urban, suburban and rural counties. RESULTS: A total of 544 of the 5000 (10.9%) surveys were returned, and 92 (16.9%) pediatricians acknowledged that they did not routinely perform physical examinations of the genitalia of adolescent males patients. Of 497 pediatricians wh

Community health nurses' knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with adolescent contraceptive services.

A national sample of community health nurses were surveyed to assess their knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with reproductive health services. Results indicated that slightly more than half of the nurses provided or administered contraceptive services to adolescents, although 73% worked in settings where contraceptive services were provided to adolescents. However, only 3.6% indicated that adolescents were their primary client population. The majority (64.3%) stated that they felt as prepared to work with adolescents as they did with adult clients. While 98% were aware that most

Contraceptive implant discontinuation at one year in adults and adolescents: Implications for adolescent reproductive health services.

OBJECTIVE: Contraceptive implants last for 3-5 years and are a highly effective and safe method of preventing unintended pregnancy. Adolescents face unique barriers that may predispose them to early discontinuation of contraceptive implants, leading to a higher risk of unintended pregnancy. We compared early contraceptive implant discontinuation rates between adolescents (10-19 years) and adults (20-49 years) and evaluated sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with early contraceptive implant discontinuation. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study that followed 2014 partici

Refeeding hypophosphatemia in hospitalized adolescents with anorexia nervosa: a position statement of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine.

Refeeding hypophosphatemia in hospitalized adolescents with anorexia nervosa is correlated with degree of malnutrition. Therefore, when initiating nutritional rehabilitation, clinicians should have a heightened awareness of the possibility of refeeding hypophosphatemia in severely malnourished patients (<70% median body mass index).

Delayed school progression and mental health problems in adolescence: a population-based study in 10,803 adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that several adult mental disorders, particularly psychoses, are preceded by impairments in cognitive function, reflected in scholastic underachievement. This study investigates the association between scholastic underachievement and general mental health problems in adolescence, using delay in school progression as a marker of poor scholastic performance. METHOD: Cross-sectional secondary school survey comprising 10,803 adolescents. Participants completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess mental health problems. The associ

Adolescent Cannabis Misuse Scale: Longitudinal Associations with Substance Use, Mental Health, and Social Determinants of Health in Early Adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Some patterns of cannabis use may presage risk for long-term negative effects. We examined associations between a novel adolescent cannabis misuse scale and early-adult life course outcomes. METHODS: We performed a secondary data analysis of a cohort of Los Angeles, CA high school students from grade 9 through age 21. Participants reported baseline individual demographic and family characteristics at grade 9, adolescent cannabis misuse (8-items) and alcohol misuse (12-items) at grade 10, and outcomes at age 21. We used multivariable regression to model the associations of cannabis

Substantiating the need for primary care-based sexual health promotion interventions for ethnic minority adolescent women experiencing health disparities.

PURPOSE: Assess the context of psychological distress, violence, and substance use among African- and Mexican-American adolescent women with a history of STI, violence, or high sexual risk behavior. These adolescents experience multiple health disparities, limited access to care, and are at particularly high risk of adverse sexual health outcomes. The results will inform sexual health promotion interventions provided by advanced practice nurses in primary care-based settings for women experiencing these disparities. METHODS: Analysis of self-report data obtained at study entry from African- a

Social support and mental health among adolescents in Kenya, Indonesia, and Vietnam: A latent class analysis using the National Adolescent Mental Health Surveys.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of country-level evidence for the association between social support and adolescent mental health while existing studies vary greatly in how they account for the interplay of multiple sources of social support. METHODS: This study utilised data from the National Adolescent Mental Health Surveys, nationally representative surveys of adolescents aged 10-17 years and their primary caregiver in Kenya, Indonesia, and Vietnam. Patterns of social support among adolescents in each country were assessed using a latent class analysis. The association between the identified s

Adolescent health and the intersectionality of ethnicity/race, sex, and sexual orientation: A national probability sample from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Although children with marginalized sociodemographic characteristics are exposed to increased health risk and disparities, there is a paucity of population-based research on health status of children occupying multiple social marginalities. The present study investigated implications of children's intersectional sociodemographic characteristics on health risk indicators. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used longitudinal data from the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study used a population-based sample of 9- to 10-year-old children attending private and public sc
