The effectiveness of patient-family carer (couple) intervention for the management of symptoms and other health-related problems in people affected by cancer: a systematic literature search and narrative review.

CONTEXT: Cancer is widely acknowledged to impact on the whole family. Yet, we do not know if there is benefit (or harm) from patient-family carer interventions in the context of cancer care. OBJECTIVES: To report a systematic search for and narrative review of patient-family carer interventions tested in the context of cancer care for effect on symptoms and other health-related problems in patients and/or their family members. METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out using Cochrane principles. Searches were of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases for reported trials

Emotional processing in epilepsy: Investigating alexithymia and its associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia refers to the difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions. Although it is frequently observed in patients with epilepsy (PWE), its relationship with the neurological condition remains poorly understood. This review aims to synthesize existing findings on the relationship between alexithymia and sociodemographic, psychological, and epilepsy-related factors in PWE, offering a comprehensive analysis of how these variables interact to influence alexithymia levels within this population. METHODS: The PRISMA guidelines were followed, and a comprehensive search of elect

Alexithymia among patients with obesity - systematic review.

Obesity is an increasingly prevalent health concern across all age groups. In addition to genetic and environmental-cultural determinants, psychological factors like alexithymia may play a significant role in the pathogenesis of excessive eating behaviors that contribute to overweight and obesity. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the literature to explore the potential role of alexithymia as a predisposing factor for excessive weight and to evaluate how it may influence the course and outcomes of obesity treatment. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a systematic re

Alexithymia in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the role of alexithymia in Parkinson's disease (PD) and its relationship to neurological, neuropsychiatric, cognitive, and neuroimaging correlates. METHODS: The database was selected using PubMed Services, Cochrane, PsycNET and Scopus and a number of key words. Further studies were sought by manually searching for secondary sources, including relevant journals and references in primary articles. The search was restricted to articles written in English between January 1980 and August 2015. RESULTS: Ten studies reported that alexith

Exploring the concept of alexithymia in the lives of people with learning disabilities.

Alexithymia is a construct that has attracted considerable research for people without learning disabilities. People with alexithymia have difficulties recognizing and describing emotions and have an externally oriented cognitive style. Alexithymia has been closely associated with a variety of mental health and somatic problems. However, the construct of alexithymia has not been considered in respect to people with learning disabilities. This article identifies parallels between the concept of alexithymia and the emotion recognition difficulties and external cognitive styles that have been ide

Practitioner Review: Definition, recognition, and treatment challenges of irritability in young people.

BACKGROUND: Irritability is one of the most common reasons for referral to child and adolescent mental health services and is the main characteristic of the new diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). However, the recognition and management of irritability presents a major challenge in clinical practice and may be partly responsible for the dramatic increase in antipsychotic prescribing in recent years. METHODS: In this review, we provide up-to-date information on the definition and mechanisms underlying irritability, and its assessment in clinical practice. We aim to disc

A new science of emotion: implications for functional neurological disorder.

Functional neurological disorder reflects impairments in brain networks leading to distressing motor, sensory and/or cognitive symptoms that demonstrate positive clinical signs on examination incongruent with other conditions. A central issue in historical and contemporary formulations of functional neurological disorder has been the mechanistic and aetiological role of emotions. However, the debate has mostly omitted fundamental questions about the nature of emotions in the first place. In this perspective article, we first outline a set of relevant working principles of the brain (e.g. allos

Does Depressed Mood Affect Accuracy of Perceptions of Cognitive Function in Multiple Sclerosis? The Role of Momentary Depressive Symptoms in the Correspondence Between Subjective and Objective Cognition in Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the momentary association between subjective cognitive dysfunction (SCD) and objective cognitive performance (OCP) varies as a function of within-person fluctuations in depressed mood among people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of microlongitudinal data collected over 14 days from PwMS. SETTING: Community. PARTICIPANTS: Ambulatory adults with MS (N=241). INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Participants completed ecological momentary assessments 4x per day for 2 weeks, reporting SCD, depressed mood, and brief objec

Negative reinforcement/negative affect reduction cigarette smoking outcome expectancies: incremental validity for anxiety focused on bodily sensations and panic attack symptoms among daily smokers.

The present investigation evaluated the incremental validity of negative reinforcement/negative affect reduction smoking outcome expectancies in the prediction of anxious and fearful responding to bodily sensations. Participants included 171 daily smokers (82 women, 89 men; mean age = 25.67 years, SD = 10.54). Consistent with prediction, negative reinforcement/negative affect reduction smoking outcome expectancies were significantly predictive of anxiety focused on bodily sensations and postchallenge intensity of cognitive panic attack symptoms, but not of physical panic symptoms. The observed

Increased spontaneous fronto-central oscillatory power during eye closing in patients with multiple somatic symptoms.

Functional somatic symptoms (FSS) are typically associated with excessive thoughts, feelings and behaviors related to the physical symptoms whether these symptoms are unequivocally associated with a diagnosed medical condition. However, less evidence is available concerning the neurocognitive deficits underlying these features of FSS. This study aimed to examine the resting-state oscillatory activities during both eye-opening and eye-closure states in individuals with FSS. Sixty-six FSS patients screened with PHQ-15 received two 10-minute sessions of EEG assessments. All completed clinical mea

Clinical characteristic of prodromal symptoms between bipolar I and II disorder among Chinese patients: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify the clinical characteristic of prodromal symptoms in Chinese patients with bipolar disorder (BD), prior to the first affective episode. It further aimed to characterize the prodromal traits between bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) and type II (BD-II). METHODS: 120 individuals with BD-I (n = 92) and BD- II (n = 28) were recruited to the study. Semi-structured interviews were then administered to evaluate prodromal symptoms in patients, within 3 years of BD onset, by using the Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale-Retrospective (BPSS-R). RESULTS: In the prodroma

Effect of a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Program on Resilience and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Among Palestinian Children Affected by Political Detention: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

Few studies have examined the effectiveness of CBT among war-traumatised Arab children, including Palestinian children. This study aimed to assess the effect of a cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program on enhancing resilience and alleviating complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) symptoms among Palestinian children affected by political detention. A quasi-experimental design utilising a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. The study included 50 affected children recruited from non-governmental organizations and community organizations in conflict-affected regions of t

Do selected lifestyle parameters affect the severity and symptoms of COVID-19 among elderly patients? The retrospective evaluation of individuals from the STOP-COVID registry of the PoLoCOV study.

BACKGROUND: Older individuals tend to include less physical activity in their routine and are more prone to chronic diseases and severe medical complications, making them the most burdened group that is losing years of life due to pandemic-related premature mortality. This research aimed to assess the lifestyle factors that affect the COVID-19 course among patients ≥ 65 years old. METHODS: The study included 568 convalescents (64.1% women and 35.9% men) with persistent clinical symptoms after isolation. The mean age was 70.41 ± 4.64 years (minimum: 65 years; maximum: 89 years). The patients c
