[Responses of afferent unit of the caudal nerve of diabetic hyperalgesic rats to sympathetic efferent stimulation].

Responses of afferent unit to sympathetic stimulation (SS), intravenous injection of noradrenaline (NA) and phentolamine in the caudal nerve of diabetic rats were investigated. The results showed that the discharge frequencies of C and Adelta units with spontaneous discharges were increased in diabetic hyperalgesic rats after SS, and these spontaneous discharges were eliminated by adrenergic antagonist. The C (6/21) and Adelta (19/81) units with no spontaneous discharges of diabetic hyperalgesic rat turned from silent state into active state during SS; although SS did not elicit afferent disch

Efferent connections of the hypothalamic "grooming area" in the rat.

The efferent connections of the hypothalamic area, where grooming can be elicited by local electrical stimulation or injection of various substances, were studied using iontophoretic injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin. This hypothalamic "grooming area" consists of parts of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and of the dorsal hypothalamic area. The specificity of these efferents for the hypothalamic "grooming area" was investigated by comparison with efferents of hypothalamic sites adjacent to this area. In addition, the distribution of oxytocinergic fibres was studied, sinc

The central organization of the vagus nerve innervating the colon of the rat.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which the vagus nerve innervates the colon remains controversial. METHODS: In 29 rats the tracer cholera toxin-horseradish peroxidase was injected into the cecum, the ascending, transverse, or descending colon or the rectum. For comparison, control injections were made into the stomach. RESULTS: For all areas of colon except the rectum, brainstem motoneuronal labeling was limited to the lateral third of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve bilaterally. In contrast, gastric injections resulted in motoneuronal labeling limited to the medial portions of the nucl

Seasonal regulation of neuroendocrine activity in male Turkish hamsters (Mesocricetus brandti): role of the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus.

Male Turkish hamsters received horizontal knife cuts within the hypothalamus to investigate the role of afferent and efferent projections of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) in seasonal regulation of endocrine function. Following surgery, the animals were exposed to either a long (16 h light/8 h dark) or a short (8 h light/16 h dark) photoperiod. Similar to pinealectomy, knife cuts placed ventral to the PVN, so as to disrupt transfer of photic information to the pineal gland, resulted in a rapid decline in circulating prolactin (PRL) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, as well as a

Peripheral and central aspects of the acoustic and lateral line system of a bottom dwelling catfish, Ancistrus sp.

The topographical relationship between the swim bladder, the inner ear, and the otic lateral line was studied in the bottom dwelling catfish, Ancistrus sp. In addition, afferent and efferent subcomponents of the eighth and lateral line nerves were labelled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or with differently fluorescing dextran amines. The swim bladder of Ancistrus consists of two separate, transversely oriented parts of each of which is connected to the sinus impar of the inner ears via two Weberian ossicles and the perilymphatic sac. The osseous capsula of the ear has two foramina other tha

Afferent and efferent nerve injury in vibration white fingers.

To study afferent pain and efferent sympathetic nerve function in vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomenon, 10 patients and 11 healthy controls were examined. Thresholds for mechanically and thermally induced pain were determined on the left side of the tip of the second finger, on the skin fold between thumb and second finger and on the ear lobe. Superficial skin blood flow was simultaneously measured by laser Doppler technique on the right third finger. The patients had higher pain thresholds than controls on the vibration-exposed index finger but not on other stimulation areas. Thus receptors

Effects of acute ethanol administration on neocortical inhibition.

The hypothesis that acutely administered ethanol could interfere with neocortical recurrent inhibition (RI) was supported. The large surface negative wave in response to antidromic stimulation of the cerebral peduncle represents a summation of inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, a measure of RI. In acute experiments on adult rats, blood alcohol levels of less than about 120 mg/100 ml slightly facilitated the surface negative wave. Higher blood alcohol levels always blocked the surface negative response. Stimulation of the somatosensory thalamic relay nuclei produced a cortical response on whic

Efferent connections of the habenular nuclei in the rat.

The efferent connections of the medial (MHb) and lateral (LHb) habenular nuclei in the rat were demonstrated autoradiographically following small injections of tritiated amino acids localized within various parts of the habenular complex. Comparison of individual cases led to the following conclusions. MHb efferents form the core portion of the fasciculus retroflexus and pass to the interpeduncular nucleus (IP) in which they terminate in a topographic pattern that refects 90 degrees rotations such that dorsal MHb projects to lateral IP, medial MHb to ventral, and lateral MHb to dorsal IP. Afferent innervation of the kidney: projections to and processing in the central nervous system.

FDA approval for catheter-based renal nerve ablation has sparked renewed interest in the role of renal nerves in hypertension and their potential contribution to other pathophysiologies. While the anti-hypertensive effects of catheter-based renal nerve ablation were thought to be due to the ablation of the sympathetic efferent nerves going to the kidney, preclinical hypertensive rodent studies and unexpected beneficial clinical outcomes have highlighted the renal afferent (sensory) nerves as a contributor to the pathogenesis of hypertension. Renal afferents are most abundant in the renal pelvi

Colonic irritation in the rat sensitizes urinary bladder afferents to mechanical and chemical stimuli: an afferent origin of pelvic organ cross-sensitization.

Chronic pelvic pain (CPP) disorders frequently overlap. We have demonstrated that acute and chronic colonic irritation can lead to neurogenic cystitis. We hypothesize that acute colonic irritation can sensitize urinary bladder afferents to mechanical and chemical stimuli. Single-unit afferent activity was recorded from fine filaments of the pelvic nerve in urethane-anesthetized Sprague-Dawley female rats before and 1 h after intracolonic administration of trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS). Only spontaneously active afferents with receptive fields in the bladder and conduction velocities <2.5

Brainstem afferents of the cholinoceptive pontine wave generation sites in the rat.

The present study was designed to investigate the distribution of brainstem neurons projecting to the pontine wave (P-wave)-generating sites in the rat. In six rats, biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) was microinjected into the physiologically identified cholinoceptive P-wave generation site. In all cases, microinjections of BDA in the cholinoceptive P-wave generating site resulted in retrograde labeling of cell bodies in many parts of the brainstem. The majority of those retrogradely labeled cells were in the pedunculopontine tegmentum, pontine reticular nucleus oralis, parabrachial nucleus, ve

Neural control of the lower urinary tract: peripheral and spinal mechanisms.

This review deals with individual components regulating the neural control of the urinary bladder. This article will focus on factors and processes involved in the two modes of operation of the bladder: storage and elimination. Topics included in this review include: (1) The urothelium and its roles in sensor and transducer functions including interactions with other cell types within the bladder wall ("sensory web"), (2) The location and properties of bladder afferents including factors involved in regulating afferent sensitization, (3) The neural control of the pelvic floor muscle and pharma

Sources of calretinin inputs to motoneurons of extraocular muscles involved in upgaze.

Recent monkey studies showed that motoneurons of the oculomotor nucleus involved in upward eye movements receive a selective input from afferents containing calretinin (CR). Here, we investigated the sources of these CR-positive afferents. After injections of tract-tracers into the oculomotor nucleus (nIII) of two monkeys, the retrograde labeling was combined with CR-immunofluorescence in frozen brainstem sections. Three sources of CR inputs to nIII were found: the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle (RIMLF), the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, and the y-group. CR i

Afferent nerve activity in a mouse model increases with faster bladder filling rates in vitro, but voiding behavior remains unaltered in vivo.

Storage and voiding functions in urinary bladder are well-known, yet fundamental physiological events coordinating these behaviors remain elusive. We sought to understand how voiding function is influenced by the rate at which the bladder fills. We hypothesized that faster filling rates would increase afferent sensory activity and increase micturition rate. In vivo, this would mean animals experiencing faster bladder filling would void more frequently with smaller void volumes. To test this hypothesis, we measured afferent nerve activity during different filling rates using an ex vivo mouse bl

Thalamic afferents emphasize the different functions of macaque precuneate areas.

We studied the thalamic afferents to cortical areas in the precuneus using injections of retrograde fluorescent neuronal tracers in four male macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Six injections were within the limits of cytoarchitectural area PGm, one in area 31 and one in area PEci. Precuneate areas shared strong input from the posterior thalamus (lateral posterior nucleus and pulvinar complex) and moderate input from the medial, lateral, and intralaminar thalamic regions. Area PGm received strong connections from the subdivisions of the pulvinar linked to association and visual function (the medi

Afferent neural feedback overrides the modulating effects of arousal, hypercapnia and hypoxaemia on neonatal cardiorespiratory control.

KEY POINTS: Evidence obtained at whole animal, organ-system, and cellular and molecular levels suggests that afferent volume feedback is critical for the establishment of adequate ventilation at birth. As a result of the irreversible nature of the vagal ablation studies performed to date, it was difficult to quantify the roles of afferent volume input, arousal and changes in blood gas tensions on neonatal respiratory control. During reversible perineural vagal block, profound apnoeas and hypoxaemia and hypercarbia were observed, necessitating the termination of perineural blockade. Respiratory

Claustral afferents of superior parietal areas PEc and PE in the macaque.

The exposed surface of the primate superior parietal cortex includes two cytoarchitectonically defined areas, the PEc and PE. In the present study we describe the distribution of neurons projecting from the claustrum to these areas. Retrograde neuronal tracers were injected by direct visualization of regions of interest, and the location of injection sites was reconstructed relative to cytoarchitectural borders. For comparison, the patterns of claustral label that resulted from injections involving neighboring cytoarchitectonic areas were analyzed. We found that the claustral territories sendi

Transverse cervical and great auricular nerve distribution in the mandibular area: a study in human cadavers.

The angle of the jaw is innervated by the auricular branch of the superficial cervical plexus (SCP). Cervical cutaneous nerves of the CP carry the sensation from the antero-lateral cervical skin. It is clinically relevant to identify the cervical cutaneous nerve distribution and the nerve point using superficial landmarks but published studies describing the emerging patterns and cervical cutaneous nerve branch distributions in the mandible are rare. The overlap between the cervical and trigeminal and facial nerve distributions and anastomoses is highly variable. The objective of this study wa

[Thumb/big-toe localizing test: examination for deficit of proprioception through the posterior column-medial lemniscal system].

"Thumb localizing test" (TLT) and "big-toe localizing test" (BLT) are bedside examinations to detect abnormalities in proprioceptive afferent pathways from the limbs. In TLT, the patient is asked to close the eyes, one upper limb of the patient is placed in a fixed position by the examiner, and the patient is asked to localize the thumb of the fixed upper limb with the thumb and index finger of the other upper limb. In BLT, the patient is asked to close the eyes, a lower limb is passively immobilized by the examiner, and the patient is asked to locate the big toe with either index finger. Norm…
