The mechanisms of airway protection, upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening, and their coordination during belching were studied with a concurrent videoendoscopic, videofluoroscopic, and manometric technique. INTRODUCTION: Venous gas emboli (VGE) are a common surrogate experimental endpoint for decompression sickness (DCS). VGE numbers are graded, and the peak post-dive grade is associated with the probability of DCS (PDCS). In 1972 there were outbreaks of eastern equine encephalitis in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada and in Connecticut, USA. Climatic data including Northern Hemisphere synoptic charts were examined. The findings indicate that the virus could have been brought to Lac Brome by infected mosquitoes carried on surface winds from Meriden, Connecticut, on the night of August 22-23, 1972. Theoretical and clinical evidence suggests that traditional ice water immersion is not the best therapy for heatstroke. We treated three patients with serious heatstroke using the downdraft from a light utility helicopter to dissipate heat primarily by evaporation and convection. The speed of cooling was substantially better than that reported in prior clinical series.

Transport via xylem of trichloroethylene (TCE) from roots to shoots in seedlings of wheat, corn, and tomato was measured following a 24-h exposure of plant roots to hydroponic solutions containing TCE. Dewdrops on plant leaves were also collected to test the foliar uptake by plants and the volatilization of TCE from shoot to air.
